Started out building a SM custom chapter army just as an excuse to have my own color scheme (Regal Blue and Mithril Silver, in case anyone cares), but I didn't give a lotta thought to fluff or traits, and I'm turning in that direction now. Unfortunately, I have to kinda make the fluff fit what I've built, but here goes:
The Order was once a portion of the Dark Angels, who basically have broken free. Not sure why yet, but I suspect the company(s) that seeded what is now The Order suffered a major defeat at the hands of chaos, possibly because the drive to seek out a Fallen One clouded judgements and cost lives. The commander, Tiberius(NOT the name I'm gonna stick with for him), had an epiphany following this battle, and decided after long millenia of self-flagellation that the Dark Angels had punished themselves enough. Naturally, the rest of the DA chapter does not agree, so Tiberius broke away, taking his companies with him.
Today, Tiberius is just as loyal to the Emperor and the Imperium as any other SM chapter, and he has respect for the DA, but he can no longer serve them. Modelwise, I'm gonna probably give a couple of high-ranking guys robes/hoods (just cuz I like how they look), but adopt my color scheme throughout.
Ok, be honest. Cheesy? Weak? Dumb? I can take it. Otherwise, any suggestions on traits would be most helpful.
Simply du... stup... retar... actually, come to think of it... I like it, I like it alot.
Recruits could be a problem if they are just companies that used to belong to the dark angels they woluld have no authority to recruit (or indeed break away) perhaps it would make it easier to say they are (were) one of the Unforgiven chapters who have abandonded their search for the fallen?
I like the idea of some Dark Angle style marines no longer thinking that he hunt for the fallen is worth it, it makes a nice contrast to the single minded determination of the dark Angels, indeed considering the dark Angels are the only ones who know the full horrors of that time (even they don't know everything) then it is more than likely that at least one Unforgiven chapter would abandon the search that has been going for millenia.

Why are there scams? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q71FLDIMBc8
This would be a problem. They wouldn't be allowed to break away; they'd be accused of heresy if they did, and hunted down by the DA (who could really do with less of a guilt complex, so a rogue company isn't going to help) and the Imperium at large.Originally Posted by Canew
And a chapter is more than just battlebrothers. If a company breaks away, it'll die out, because there are no techmarines or apothecaries to take care of the chapter's vehicles and geneseed. These aren't part of the companies, they're part of the chapter HQ which is a separate organisation.
Also, repainting the armour is considered a mark of great disrespect to the armour's machine spirit, and very likely not done by anyone who wants their armour to function properly.
One thing to remember when writing fluff is that unless you contradict some official GW fluff you can do anything. If you want proof of that just read my journal. This seems fine although you will need to explain a bit more about breaking away from the DA. If they were 1 whole company + techamrines, apothecaries etc then remember that you have just crippled the DA chapter. They just lost a tenth of their strength, something they will not permit. If however you were similar to a third founding chapter then you could do a bit more with your fluff.
Have fun and remember if the law doesnt say you cant do it then its legal. Same thing for writing fluff.
Some random names for you to diverge off or use:
lol I enjoy making up crazy futuristic names and you seem like one of the many people that dislike naming their characters.

One person's opinion is not proof, not that I disagree with you overmuch.Originally Posted by LordLinkBut any DA chapters outside the Unforgiven (the DA and their Second Founding chapters) don't know anything about the Fallen, so the whole of the background for this falls apart.Originally Posted by LordLink*points to the Law/Spirit of the Law debate*Originally Posted by LordLink
And where's the link to your journal, btw?
Geez your harsh Xerxes, every post must be perfect. Ok time to explain myself:
My 'proof' was nothing more than an attempt to show off my own fluff about Vein's Elite. However I still stand by my make up whatever fluff you want statement. http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ournal&j=12933
I didn't know that about the DA. But still the rest of my thread explains why its not a good idea to have a splinter company that left the DA.
I recently had that debate with my father for a couple of hours and yes I was referring to my side of the argument.
That all you wanted?
Not quite perfect, but yes, I am a fluff puritan. And a philosopher. And a grammar nut (I love collective nouns). And a spelling bee. Maybe this says something about me?Originally Posted by LordLinkSorry if I implied that the rest wasn't.Originally Posted by LordLink

I think the most challenging part of your fluff would be to explain how they broke away from the Dark Angels, took chapter assets (At least a Strike Cruiser eh?) and managed to not end up being hunted as New Fallen.
I'm not saying it can't be done, it's just a challenge.
Also, something most folks don't seem to consider is, unless you really want to, why bother creating a new "chapter"? I've got a squad kicking around that is the "last" of their chapter. They pop up as allies every once in a while, kinda like the Legion of the Damned, but without the uberness.
Why not have your splinter company go off on their own and do what good they can with the assets they have left? This will work especially if you are only ever going to paint up, say, 1500-2000 points.
Then you don't have to worry about them needing to recruit or trying to work them into the whole "Only by the decree of the Lords of Terra and the Fabricator General of Mars can a new Chapter be raised" constraints that will inevitably be quoted in every thread. :p
In answer to your question, it would be fine to have a 3rd, 4th... even 15th founding chapter that is offspring of, say, the Angels of Redemption and know nothing of the secrets held by members of the Inner Circle. As long as you remember that whatever armylist you are using, you cannot crossover (i.e. Deathwing army with Traits would be rules-invalid)

I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
