The Tau enjoy a fairly good relationship with the Imperium, overall. Yes, they have skirmish warfare between the more fanatical elements (like the Adeptus Astartes) on a semi-regular basis, but ultimately the Tau are better regarded than even the Eldar by the Imperium.

I imagine neither side would torture captives from the other; they'd subject them to interrogation but nothing physical would be done to them. This is doubly true for the Tau, who regard this kind of physical violence as savage and barbaric.

Likely the captured commander would be bartered for land or trading rights, with combat erupting over the issue only if one party feels the other is asking too much.

Tau forces are domed and they play Orbital, Astral Projection, and Babble from their speakers

so with this battle i could do it that the tau have captured a space marine commander and the space marines are raiding a tau base to try and get him back?

or would it make more sence the other way around?

Well, Space Marines, knowing Chaplains and such, would probably be the ones that captured the Ethereal. The Ethereal would be strapped into a chair, and probably shocked/pummeled/burned but nothing severe by Marine standards. Mild physical torture seems most likely. As far as Tau capturing a commander, they would probably just keep him in an electro-cell of some sort and probably tranquilized, so if the commander were captured, you should have like...a required Techmarine in order to get him out...use that servo-arm, and in order to use him, you must have an Apothecary who can neutralize the tranquilizer. His command squad is probably his best friend, so it's quite fluffy.

Tau Ethereals are wanted by the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Adeptus Arbites because those factions want to know how the ethereals create the famous Tau loyalty.

If space marines were ordered to capture an ethereal, they would not hurt him, as it would reduce his scientific value. The adeptus mechanicus however would do every imaginable experiment with him and finally probe his brain or something like that.

I think the Adeptus Mechanicus would rather experiment on a regular Tau, the Ethereal being very prized.

I'm sure that some enterprising magos biologis would love to get his paws on an ethereal for study. Furthermore, I don't think that the ethereal would survive the process, necessitating a Tau rescue before the dissection started.

if you have played the game firewarrior, then you would know that the tau will go to EXTREME lengths to rescue an etheral

i think weather the marines would tourture the tau would be dependant on the chapter involved.

if they are blood angels, they would probably be to blood thirsty to bother with prisoners, and the templars would never sully themselves with the presence of an alien heathen
