hey all you out there in LO!
I have been playing 40k for several years now and my main army is Space Marines.
Generally I play the game for the tactics and stategy of it. Modeling and converting can be fun though. The Fluff and artwork on the other hand has always bothered me a bit. I guess I have always seen the emperor in the 40k storyline as I would see the President of the U.S. Not a God, but a man in charge and high ranking. So my Space Marines are like the secret service in their loyalty willing to take a bullet for the man or in defense of the Imperium, but still free to practice what religion they may.
Basically I am looking for some fluff ideas on creating a Christian Chapter. How they came to be, how they live, how they escape inquisition from the Imperium. How they view the Warp and Psykers.
I do not want to turn this thread into a debate on the truth of religion, but just wanted to discuss some neat ideas about how one can bring Christianity into the 40k universe.
Also if you are going to post here and say this idea is dumb you can go elsewhere as I am not going to discontinue thinking of this project b/c someone or a bunch of people feel it is stupid. Since I already have modeled the crosses on my Space Marine figures I am not interested in getting new figs.
You are of course free to engage in any new ideas and projects that you wish. However, on LO it is something of a taboo to suggest bringing real world things - especially religeon, into 40K. It was done very recently with Islam, and that turned into a flame war of epic proportions. I'm not saying its a bad idea, but i'm afraid you are crossing a LO line somewhat with this idea.
I cannot speak for all members here, most will be polite. But this will get angry responses from the less mature among us, be prepared.
Sorry to be a pain, but I felt I should at least tell you what you may face with this topic.
See you around
Thank you for that bit of information Will.
It is most appreciated. I did not realize what I posted was Taboo to this site, and I do not mean to cause any trouble.
In any case I still am looking for ideas from anyone willing to participate in this thread.
well I beleive the Emperor is supposed to be a Jesus like figure and their are a few names that have been stolen from biblical scrolls. However I can't see the Marines worshipping a Christian God or anyone other than the Emperor or thier primarch.
If you want to censor people's opinions then this is definately not the right place to do that. (A church or your local government are more the right place.) So don't be surprised when people do come here with opinions you dont want to hear and the staff do nothing to help you censor those opinions...
As to the actual idea, one of the biggest problems with having a religious chapter that does not follow the imperial creed is that they would not have been created to begin with if this was the case.
Any basic info you have for your chapter helps us to answer your vague questions. Though, in an attempt to answer them:
If your chapter is pretty much a standard chapter than they should view the warp as the exact same as every other chapter. Despite what they grew up knowing prior to being marines, they are privy to information and certain truths.
(As to the idea being taboo, discussion about religion is not allowed outside of the enhanced forum but a chapter based on christianity does not fall under that catagory. However after codexihad was brought up, and ended seeing members and staff for and against the idea, there isn't going to be a great deal of faith for this idea.)

Whilst only loosely in relation to what you are talking about, I am planning on using some Christian iconography in my Lamenters chapter. This will mainly revolve around the figure of St Jude / Thaddeus, who was the patron Saint of Lost causes.
I really like fluff heavy armies, and your sounds like it could be very interesting. Will you be using lots of religious imagery? Also what denomination of the Christian church would they be, as this would dictate to an extent the flexibility and ease with which the fluff would fit. A hard line 'Catholic' force would fit well with Inquisitors and the like (all though Natural Law means the Emporers Golden Throne should be switched off?!), not sure bout others yet. just had a revelation, an Imperial Guard force based upon the Salvation Army! I do have odd thoughts
- please keep us posted on developments.

Otherwise there will never be a reason how SM can ever have a religion as they get brained programmed by the apothcary to not think such, have the gene-seed of the emperor engraved in them, so how can they be loyal to another being, that holds just as greater place to the emperor when they have forgotten 'christianity' in 40k years. To make the most reasonable, and ONLY 40k tie would be to associate it with the Imperial guard who have more of a free mind, and are as normal as humans get.
You want ideas? Simply take things off of Black Templars and their Crusades is your best bet.
Philheed, I congradulate you on choosing this fluffy path.
I tried to create a christian chapter, called them the Sons of Faith. You could try searching for it underSons of Faith. It was a pretty long thread.
Heres some obsticles you will have to overcome, but i'm sure you'll be able to.
Basiscally when they become marines they are brain washed into believing the Imperial creed. I could never figure this one out.
The Inquisition- I said my chapter was a fleet based one and there-fore was very mobile and and hard to track down. They more than likley won't last long, but maybe with a little luck they could withstand the Inquisition.
Another thing is how do they get their supplies- Basically Raid imperial planets.
How can the be allowed to kill- the bible says not to murder, as in cold blood, not in battle. however if it were me don't make them to blood thirsty.
I am sorry for any spelling errors.
Thanks for everyones comments and being level headed about it.
I do not wish to censor anyone's opinions btw so I am not expecting any help from any moderators. If people are going to come at me for believing as I believe than so be it.
In any case the idea I was coming up with my Chapter was that they were created by gene seed from the noblest of chapters "the Ultramarines", and were taught and brought up by the same doctrine that any other SM chapter was given. Shortly after their creation however, they came upon a fierce battle against Chaos with many daemons and such on a very peculiar Planet. It was then that an entity in human form came upon the battle and with a word destroyed the Daemons, and their followers. The chapter was at awe at first of the power that was held by this man, but were reluctant to listen to him since they have been taught the doctrines every other SM chapter was taught. However, over time this entity would soften their hearts and they would be more open to the wisdom of his teachings. The teachings would basically follow along the lines of the bible in the modern context from a non-denominational origin. Thus creating a Christian Space Marine chapter.
Salus, your ideas are very neat indeed. I think I going change the raiding thing however, I don't believe a Christian chapter would kill in order to steal. Instead i would go with they get supplied b/c they help protect planets from a number of threats. Perhaps even run a number of star systems of there own in which they govern, and that is secluded from the rest of the imperium to not achieve much notice. As far as keeping their belief secret that should not be to hard i mean look at the Dark Angels.

Word up christian brother! I find this a spectacular idea and I could help you out with this.
Christians back in the golden days of Rome were persecuted harshly so you'll be wanting
to look back past the fact that you'll even be serving the 'Emperor'
*As a Christian chapter you could posibly look at the fact that you have been banned
and excommunicated for following unorthidox practices such as walking on water.
*There was a time way back when there would be holy crusades with the church in
London. They were called Templars, or Knights. You could fit this name into your
*There are alot of clues about what you could use in the NT so be creative and induldge
in all the chapters that the Deciples have written.
I myself have created such a chapter of the 'Templar Champions' upholding
a specific mission to spread light of the Creator into the darkest regions of the galaxy.
I connected them to the Black Templars and made them the successor chapter. As previously
noted my templar champions are the elite marines from various crusades put into one
Hope this helps, PM me if you need help looking through the Bible.
