This is an idea for a future army list. A battlebarge full of sm's and their gear are enroute to battle when they shortcut through a warp storm. The ruinous powers fling their ship back in time to the Warhammer fantasy world. Their ship crashes in dragon infested mountains, damaging it beyond repair. So , they battle the dragons, locals, and other beasts for many days. Then they relise that they are not on a imperial world, and start to conserve ammo. Then a lone marine starts to train dragons to replace the assualt marines jump pack since fuel is on short supply. Then after years of fantasyizing marine they find a path back to the future. now they raise their own dragons to use and relly on the old skool way of fighting, up close in cc.
In game this would affect a army by mounting all jumpinfanty on a dragons back, taking the eye to eye disadv and the assualt.... CAnt think of the triat... the assualt marine trait, and the ccs and bps trait too.
I can't see something like this replacing the Assault marines. Simply because from what this sounds like, they are mounted on dragons. I could however see them as replacing speeders, and speeder weapons could be mounted to the dragons via harnesses and whatnot. (have to figure out something for not being open topped though.)
if you could find a larger dragon model, or a giant lizard model , you cuold possibly replace tanks too. I have seen pictures of a Salamander marine mounted on a cold one before, does it represent a bike?
Mm. A reasonably well thought out idea. But the thing is, dragons tend to be huge. As was said earlier, you'd do better using the dragons as land speeder replacements. Jump troopers are a small unit.
there is also the whole problem of
40K AND FANTASY ARE NOT RELATED ANYMORE!!!!111oneone
so it couldn't work, wouldn't work.....
now come up with something else

His statement is correct, but it isn't hard to work around. Just replace "Fanstasy planet" with any sort of planet at a similar technological level.
As some people have already, any dragon that could carry a space marine would have to be huge. Especially seeing that the average space marine weighs a metric ton. So yeah, definately not suitable for assault marines.
As mpdscott so subtly put, the 40k and fantasy are no longer linked in any way. Not in time or space. However you could just say that the world is an undiscovered world in the contemporary 40k galaxy that happens to have creatures which resemble dragons. It'd work well for speeders, especially a multi-melta one.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
It doesn't have to be the fantasy world. It could just be one with giant lizards on it. As has been said, fantasy and 40K aren't related any more, and it blows a serious hole in your credibility to have that idea in there. But it's not a necessary one.
alright I agree the dragon would have to be huge to carry a marine, so maybe the army should be based off of the ravenwing, to allow more speeders.

one tip, get a dragon and mount a pilot ontop then make some sort of turnets held by the gragons claws with a marine in it with a heavy bolter/multi-melta/assault cannon
the heavy flamer should be the dragons breath
work the idea further out. i can see an entire dragon army forming.
good luck and hope it helps
