As some of you may remember my earlier posts on the Savlar I have finished designing my HSO and 6 Junior Officers. I know its long but please read it and tell me what you think. I plan to write a short novel on them eventually.
The Savlar Chem-Dogs 2nd Regiment
The Savlar 2nd regiment is a newly formed army after the victory at Armageddon. It is only 8 years old and began as a small independent platoon led by Commander Lyam. The dogs steal any equipment they need and are renowned on the battle-field for their legendary cowardice unless under the effects of a chem-inhaler. The dogs are made up almost exclusively of scum, thugs and criminals and the bottom dregs of society. Never the less they hold their own in battle and are technically of equal status to any other regiment out there.
Heroic Senior Officer Warren
Warren had been a senior officer of the Cadian 317th “Flame-wheel” regiment for 60 years and a Flame-wheel guardsman long before that. As Warren fought countless battles, driving back all manner of horrors in protection of the emperors realm he was constantly overlooked for promotion or medallions. Every battle Warren was making more and more mistakes, his men only surviving through sheer luck. However his men claimed they would rather follow a lucky officer than a skilled one and so he remained with his platoon. Eventually though Warren’s mind began to deteriorate with his increasing age. After his hundredth birthday he had lost all respect from his men and possessed none of the vitality and charisma a leader requires. Warren was given an honourable discharge and a fine retirement. Warren on the other hand was not satisfied, he felt the emperor still wanted him to fight the enemies of the Imperium and Warren refused his retirement. Warren was allowed to stay on serving the Flame-wheel but when he lost an important space port to some pathetic ork kommandos he was forcefully retired.
Warren chafed at the decision and searched for another regiment to join. Everywhere he went though the Imperial Guard found him senile and unfit for duty. Eventually Warren discovered the newly formed Savlar chem-dogs 2nd regiment. Lacking any kind of leadership except for the young commander Lyam the Savlar chem-dogs were desperate for experience, accepting Warren as senior officer regardless of the consequences. Over his years of serving the Savlar as their senior officer Warren has sunk deeper and deeper into his senility. Losing what was left of his tactical ability. Warren is almost constantly hounded by the regiment’s only commissar, Jorgun, who ensures Warren does not interfere with the real plans made by his Junior Officers. It is only a matter of time until Warren is killed and one of his JO’s are promoted. All of the Junior Officers are competing for the rank at this time and it is unknown who will attain it.
Junior Officer Lyam
Lyam is the only officer who wears the Savlar uniform with pride, the rest see it as either a punishment or a hellhole. Lyam’s father had been one of the founding members of the original Savlar regiment, an officer in its 1st platoon. The war on Armageddon was a dangerous place though and one day a 6 year old Lyam watched his father march off to war, flanked by the silent form of his drugged command squad, and never come back. Lyam had heard later that his father had been caught by friendly artillery fire, some death corps basilisks had cared little for whether they hit enemy orks or Savlar scum and Lyams father had been caught in the fire. Ever since that day Lyam wore the badge of the Savlar with pride, showing that they too made sacrifices to save the Imperium in their own unique way.
Lyam is the longest serving member of the Savlar 2nd regiment and is its original officer. Lyam founded the regiment from mostly from criminals and thugs, even forced to hire some mercenaries to keep up the numbers required for a regiment. With the addition of the recognised commander Warren the Savlar 2nd were recognised as a full fledged regiment of the emperors Imperial Guard. Lyam is the most popular officer, having know quite a few of the soldiers since childhood and knows most of the infantry by name. Lyam is famous for minimising casualties to his platoon and as such his platoon is widely regarded as the best of them all.
Junior Officer Morgan
Morgan was born to an extremely wealthy family and lived out his childhood as a spoiled brat. There was no problem that could not be solved by whinging to his father. At the age of sixteen Morgan’s home town was attacked by a massive dark eldar raiding force. The xeno’s were met with fierce resistance from the local Imperial Guard and the battle was joined. Morgan was at a rebellious age and after such a sheltered life he was eager to join the defence. Morgan rushed to the battlefield and found a good place nearby from which to see what was going on. Morgan was so excited at seeing the battle that he failed to notice a xeno patrol; the dark eldar noticed him though. Morgan was leapt upon by a squad of alien warriors, he tried to defend himself with his needle pistol but he was clearly outnumbered and outmatched. Morgan was quickly restrained and being hauled back to the dark eldar base for emperor knew what horrible fate but seemingly from nowhere another figure appeared to his rescue.
By the symbols and medallions adorning his uniform Morgan identified him as an off-world commissar, a hero of the Imperial Guard. The commissar slashed Morgan’s bonds and leapt to attack the xeno scum. Taken by surprise the dark eldar retreated to their raider transport, attempting to call for re-enforcements. The commissar was upon them though, hacking left and right, under the fury of such an attack the squad was quickly cut to pieces but more and more xeno’s were appearing by the second. The commissar motioned for Morgan to run before charging the alien horde alone. Morgan ran away, burning with the guilt of knowing his idiocy had cost the Imperium a hero today.
Morgan kept the memory of that day with him and when he turned 20 he declared to his family that he wished to leave for Terrax to train as a commissar. His father was horrified by the idea of his only son joining the army, and as anything less than a senior officer too and forbade Morgan to leave. Their argument raged long into the night until in a fury at being denied his dreams Morgan drew his needle pistol and shot his father once through the neck.
Knowing that he was now considered a criminal by his world Morgan fled, running to the world of Terrax to begin training as a commissar. Morgan was accepted into an academy but half way through his education his past was discovered and Morgan was forced to flee again. Trying to find his way into some sort of Military career Morgan at last found the Savlar chem-dogs 2nd regiment. Having had training on Terrax Morgan was accepted as a sergeant but showed exceptional skill and prowess in battle and quickly found himself promoted to Junior Officer. Leaving Lyam’s platoon and creating one of his own.
Morgan is now known as a highly disciplined officer and an unwelcome sight amongst many of the criminals and scum in the chem-dogs. He forces his platoon into harsh training regimes and whilst this has made his platoon by far the most unpopular it still produces highly skilled and disciplined guardsmen. Morgan can be trusted to achieve any objective, no matter what the difficulty may be and no matter what the cost.
Junior Officer Black Widow
No-one remains in the universe who knows Black Widows real name but herself. At only 5 years old she murdered her entire family and ran away to a life of crime. She made her living as a smuggler, hired thug and even part time assassin. She became infamous throughout many planets as the “The Witch”. After a life of organised crime Black Widow was at last caught for the murder of several noblemen. She was never identified as the witch and sentenced to a Penal Colony. Once at the colony Black Widow was assigned to manufacturing guns for the Catachan “Lionheart” regiment but after only a few weeks of labour she stabbed the 6 men on duty with her and stole a small transport.
Black Widow fled to a connection of hers on Armageddon to seek refuge but he attempted to capture her for the reward money. She shot the commander and fled into the back streets of Armageddon, eventually meeting JO Lyam of the Savlar chem-dogs 2nd regiment. Lyam persuaded her to join the Savlar as a hiding place. Amongst the chem-dogs Black Widow is famous for her nerves of steel and makes daring drops from grav shutes into heavily fortified enemy positions. She leads an elite platoon into dangerous attacks where a simple trench war would be suicide and a more specialised mission is required.
Junior Officer Gustav
Gustav originally came to the planet of Armageddon as a salesman, interested in selling some weaponry to the citizens of Armageddon to safeguard them from ork attacks. He was a con artist who played upon people fears to get them to buy cheap and sometimes even fake guns and making a fortune doing so. While on Armageddon Gustav tried to sell faulty weapons to the Savlar chem-dogs. HSO Warren took an interest in Gustav and quickly saw Gustav as a trusted friend, even going so far as to order most of the regiments weapons from him.
The Savlar would have been in serious trouble wielding fake lasguns but fortunately Black Widow saw through the forgeries. In her routine weapon inspections she began to see flaws in some of the rifles and investigated further. Under close scrutiny Gustav was exposed as a fraud and Black Widow made it her personal mission to hunt him down and bring him forwards to receive the Savlar’s version of “Justice”. Gustav was eventually found hiding out in a shrine to the emperor and Black Widow dragged him out kicking and screaming before hundreds of holy priests. Some were disturbed by his screams but under Black Widows icy glare no-one came to Gustav’s defence.
Back at the Savlar headquarters Gustav pleaded with his so called friend Warren, offering to join the undermanned chem-dogs as repayment for this debt. Warren was sucked in by the con artists tricks and agreed, however Gustav had been sincere about his promise and in his 1st mission as a guardsmen saved Warrens life by dragging him from a burning chimera and escaping a massive ork charge. With several skilled (or lucky as the other JO’s call him) Warren became more and more impressed with Gustav, granting him promotion after promotion until eventually he was granted his own platoon to lead despite the objections of the other officers.
In battle Gustav cares little for his men’s lives and orders them into suicidal charges, willing to sacrifice a whole squad just to gain a foot of ground. Gustav is still fairly popular amongst his troops as he provides huge amounts of alcohol, money and chem-inhalers to keep his soldiers morale up. Gustav is unpopular amongst the other officers due to his earlier scams threatening to destroy the chem-dogs.
Junior Officer Ash
Ash Mason was already half mad when he joined the Savlar to escape a past of random murders and disorganised crime. He was assigned to an armoured fist squad and his sergeant made the mistake of giving him the squad’s flamer to use. Ash burned his way through swathes of enemy with no regard for his own safety. Racking up a kill count higher than most of the uneducated thugs of the Savlar could count to Ash was soon promoted to sergeant. Ash soon found the joy of leading a rampaging chimera into the middle of a battle and slaughtering the enemy on all sides with enormous firepower. With such a successful kill count and level of battlefield experience Ash was promoted time and again.
As leader of the 1st Savlar armoured company Ash discovered a hidden genius at battlefield tactics, using basilisks to soften up the enemy’s morale then leading hellhounds and russ in a devastating pincer attack that allowed no opposition. At seeing this skill in battle Gustav recommended Ash for the rank of Junior Officer and used his considerable influence over Warren to make it happen. With the surprising support of JO Morgan, Ash was permitted to lead his own platoon.
In battle Ash always uses the heavy equipment, if someone has a lasgun they have no place in his platoon. Ash almost always takes to the battlefield in his beloved chimeras and leads several squads into suicidal charges to distract the enemy from other threats such as sentinel sneak attacks and his famous pincer move. Ash’s platoon is famous for the sheer number of missiles and grenades it can put out, blowing enemies to pieces 1 by 1 with superior weapons.
Junior Officer Prince
Prince became governor of the planet Chiron at the young age of 18 and proved himself top be more than capable of administrating the planet. Prince often proved himself to be a capable commander and launched several crusades with is army deep into the tau empire, completely destroying many alien planets that would have joined the tau empire. Prince achieved medals by the score, becoming the most decorated officer in the history of Chiron. Eventually though such military victories began to go to Prince’s head and he began to see the Imperium as nothing more than weaklings compared to his strength. After all they were spread out so thinly that they hardly even noticed Chiron.
Prince declared Chiron’s independence and began setting up defences for the counter-attack. Inquisitor Soleil was the first to react to Chiron’s revolt and ordered her army to begin an invasion. To assist her she called the Sun Lions space marine chapter, receiving 3 companies to put down the rebellion. When the Sun Lions landed their drop pods into the capital city Prince put up a masterful defence, laying down mines and other nasty traps for the marines. He surrounded the city in Leman Russ, cutting off any escape for the lions and bled them to death through the attrition of city fight.
Such a crushing victory for his cause attracted more attention however. The wrath of the Sun Lions fell upon Chiron laying waste to the cities with the awesome power if 6 full battle companies. Prince reeled from defeat to defeat as the Sun Lions drove him from his cities and Soleil’s guardsmen came in behind them to occupy the locations. Prince surrendered to Soleil at last and the populace of Chiron were sentenced to serve amongst various Penal Legion spread throughout the galaxy.
Soleil was unwilling to waste such military talent on a Penal Colony though and sought a solution that allowed Prince to serve the Imperium in a more effective way. The answer to her problem came in the form of the Savlar chem-dogs, a regiment made up of criminals and villains, a place where Prince’s crimes would be ignored by his fellow soldiers. Prince was assigned as a sergeant in the Savlar but due to his prowess in battle he was soon promoted to Junior Officer.
In battle Prince leads his small regiment on special commando-style missions, infiltrating deep into enemy territory and destroying supply dumps, crippling morale and even capturing enemy commanders. Prince only accepts the most elite guardsmen into his platoon and as a result it is short of numbers compared to the other chem-dogs.
HSO Warren is an old man and an inept general, Lyam, Morgan, Prince and Gustav are all competing for the promotion once he dies.
Lyam is claiming that he is the founder of the 2nd regiment and the only reason he wasn’t HSO before is because of his youth and inexperience, now he has overcome both these obstacles and deserves to lead. He also claims he is the only one without a price on his head and as such should be the public figurehead.
Morgan has a relatively weak claim standing on the fact that he was born wealthy and still has access to more funds than any of the other officers.
Gustav is opposed by all of the other officers but he has Warren’s recommendations going for him. If Warren names him as his successor Gustav’s claim would become very powerful.
Prince claims that since he was once a planetary governor and a great military general he is the best suited for the position of HSO. However as such a public figure he stands enormous risk of another authority figure discovering the secret of his past. Both Lyam and Warren are opposing Prince’s claim saying that if he is discovered he would embarrass the Savlar considerably.
Both Black Widow and Ash Mason have little interest in the position of HSO as they are both satisfied with having their own Platoons.
very pretty. a well written peice of fluff, however, i dont see a regiment full of missile launching guardsmen as realsitic.
great job however.

thanks for the comment.
It's well thought-out stuff, but you seem to have missed some of the fundamental points about the Savlar.
First off, there's more than one regiment on Savlar. According to here, there are at least fourteen. While there is nothing to stop you choosing the 2nd regiment as your focus, it smacks a bit of "I want to be big and important" syndrome.
Secondly, Jorgun is a commissar. Why hasn't he shot Warren for incompetence? More to the point, why hasn't he been fragged by the men? If regiments like the Catachan do it, I can't see the Savlar holding back for any reason.
There's also the idea of Lyam being proud of being Savlar at least in part because his dad was one. Salvar is a horrible place, and most Chem Dogs fight to stay away from the place. I can't see Lyam feeling anything but loathing towards his dad for ending him up there. He would have also had nothing to do with the regiment's founding, the Departmento Munitorium would have dealt with that, and so the assertion that he recruited everyone within his reach is unrealistic.
A minor point, but the "local Imperial Guard" mentioned in Morgan's section would be the PDF, not a foreign regiment, as they wouldn't have time to ship them in.
Why would the Dark Eldar, old beyond imagining and sadistic to a... thing, be afraid of a lone commissar? Particularly if he was being bundled into a cage, I'd expect there to be a group of them. Why would one mon-keigh pose a threat that would make them run away?
How did Black Widow get offworld? You state she gets to Armageddon via a friend, but the text implies she gets offworld first. Doing so without a Navigator would be difficult in the extreme. Also, why would Lyam want to persuade her to join, as I've said above that he wouldn't be involved in regimental recruitment? Why would she accept? As soon as the Savlar are off-duty, they get shipped home, where they REALLY don't want to be.
Sorry to nitpick, there are some nice concepts there and the Savlar are a pet love of mine (I'm currently trying to get up the fortitude to build an all-infantry Chem Dog army), the two just need to meet a bit more cleanly.
Thanks Xerxes. The reason I posted this is so that the fluff masters could pick holes in them. I'll try to fix the ones you found.
I was expecting most of the problems to be with Prince, I thought I was going a little to far with why he was still alive.
Warrens not totally incompetant, he can still win battles and makes an acceptable HSO, and he has a very good histroy behind him. The men havent mutinied because he still has a lot of supporters (just not among the JO's) and I havent thought of anything as to why the commissar hasn't shot him yet. A detail like that isn't going to just stop my fluff altogether though.
I suppose you could say Lyam is mentally challenged, I noticed you said most Savlar hate it and Lyam is the only one in the regiment that enjoys being there...
About the 2nd regiment thing I didn't know that. I posted a whole heap of questions before and no-one could tell me how many regiments they had. I just picked the 2nd and ran with it.
Thanks for the PDF thing, I will change that. With the DE thing I was only thinking 3 or 4 warriors. game-wise the commissar would tear them to shreds. I can remove the DE being afraid bit though.

*snicker*...even going so far as to order most of the regiments weapons from him.
While it may not be 100% fluff-master-proof, that was a brilliant read! You've really put some time and thought into these guys, and I think they're wonderful.
I'd love to see the future of these guys - are they your tabletop army, as well?
If so.. do you play them like you write them? If so, I pity the opponents you face... "what the heck is he doing?!?!"
Keep it up, I'm lovin' it!
lol thanks. yes it isn;t fluff master proof but as if anyones going to complain because its slightly unrealistic. As if im ever going to get expelled from a tournament because i cant explain why Jorgun hasnt shot Warren yet.
I am considering starting them but the Black Templar are calling me too. Now that I've hit 2000 points of eldar I intend to collect one of the 2.
Savlar for fluff
Black Templar for models
Can't decide for gameplay
its a dead heat.
Tournaments aren't a fine fluff needlecomb, so I wouldn't judge that as the final arbiter of fluff worth.
Also, you haven't answered my questions about fragging and Black Widow.
And I would also say the Chem Dogs. Why collect marines?
Taken in consideration on how you written the fluff, i vote Chem Dogs too. Marines are plain marines, you cannot really make anything of them. Criminals with flamethrowers is an other thing xD
I'll go out on a wild goose chase here if you don't mind.
