This is the fluff behind my new alpha legion. My first attempt at 40k fluff. Legion colours are regal blue into icy blue blended together. Hope you enjoy, any comments or potential improvements feel free to add.
Silent Strike Legion - when the heresy ended the founders of the silent strike legion were stranded on a crippled battle hulk. The ships commanderhad fought off the imperial onslaught and guided the ship to safety, but it was left adrift and although heading in the direction of the eye it was destined to miss. The gods of chaos had not abandoned the brave souls of the Legion who had fought so valiantly till the end for Horus and a
stroke of chaotic luck had an imperial deep space mining fleet come upon the
crippled space hulk in a region of space that was practically empty. Those souls quickly had there ships and lives taken by the Legion commander but the vessels were not capable of the speed of travel to reach the eye.
Making the best of the situation the commander of the Legion quickly decided if the legion could not return to the chaos gods the legion would bring those gods to all planets within striking distance of the old freighters and mining vessels that the legion now commanded. Checking the maps it was clear that this was a desolate and barren area of space, far
from any major worlds and without a star to provide warmth or life. However outposts of imperium man are everywhere that valuable resources lie and this area had a number of rocky planets with valuable minerals and plasma rich materials. With a complete dedication to there new cause and a sense of purpose after many years of drifting they set about
ascertaining the strengths and weaknesses of all the planets nearbye.
Quickly the legion found this was an inhospitable place, with terrain that was rocky and barren but always covered in ice from the lack of sun. The jungle camo they had used on wars close to terra was quickly abandoned, they adopted the colours of there new hunting ground, the icy rock scapes of the mining worlds. It was apparent however that battles on these worlds were not always required, many men sent to these farthest reaches of
humanity were sent there as punishments by the powers of the imperium,
there was no need to win over every planet by force. Quickly and efficiently the marines of the Silent Strike became more than the warriors they had been in the heresy, they became spies and diplomats, bearing promises of what would could be gained by turning to the true power, the power of chaos and forsaking the false weak god who is the emperor.
Someworlds were more loyal than others though and battles were requried against pockets of loyalists or even small sections of guardsmen or marines who refused to bow to chaos. In these far reaches of the galaxy though, where men were far from the imperial hub and luxuries were few the lure of what turning to chaos could give was strong, many of the worlds fell without a single battle being fought and merely a few assassanations of outspoken
loyalists being required.
By the time a battle cruiser filled with a detachment of the ultramarines space marines was sent to investigate why the mining ships had stopped supplying the main depot all worlds within distance of the captured mining fleet were under Chaos control. The battle against the marines was bloody and terrible, they were hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. They had at worst expected to find a miners revolt which could easily be put down by a
few executions of the ring leaders. What they had found was a prospering set of worlds, governed cruelly and harshly but also with an effectiveness that was not possible from terra so many light years away. The organised defence force of chaos cultists could probably have dealt with the marines alone but the legion was waiting, unseen to the loyal marines they struck as soon as the majority of the force had disembarked with a simultaneous
strike on the ship proper by the chosen of the legion in full terminator
battle gear as well as a ferocious ground assault by the heavily infiltrated elite marines. The ultramarines fought a short and bloody stand but they were outmatched and surprised. They were wiped out to a man before they even had opportunity to send a distress beacon.
With the capture of the battle cruiser the chaos marines of the Silent Strike legion could eventually return home. Leaving enough marines that had been engineered from within the captured worlds to protect the newly captured worlds they set off for home and the chaos worlds within the eye, finally to be reunited with there brothers and gain revenge for the
emperors false promises. On arrival however they found only strife and horror. The rebel legions had united with the 4 factions within mother chaos and could not find a common purpose. Clearly the imperium was ripe for the taking, years of conquest had proven this to the legion, but the disgusting lack of unity in the chaos ranks could not achieve this.
Quickly they decided that they could not unite these warring legions, too long in the eye had made them hungry for war, any war, losing sight of the focus required to topple the imperium by striking at it from within its corrupt heart.
The legion set out back into imperium space, to anentirely different set of planets but with the same characteristics, they are far from the core of command of terra and ripe for turning to mother chaos by the powers of the Silent Strike Legion
anyway, would like if anyone who has taken the time to read the story would comment, even if just to say they hate it : )
what i'm trying to paint is a picture of an organised and dedicated force. Well disciplend and with a sound purpose, dismayed by the lack of organisation in the forces of Chaos. They can see how ripe the weak imperium is for takeover but are disgusted that the forces of chaos do not completely unite to crush there ancient foe.
I'll be working on it anyway as i understand its not perfectly written and at times a bit long winded.
But there is a legion like that already...they're called the Word Bearers.
Really your background is good and definitely makes sense for an offshoot or company of the Alpha Legion. Most of the Legion never went to the Eye of Terror but instead stayed in Imperial space, so I could definitely see this happening. If you wanted to, an interesting way to expand the background would be to explore the Silent Strike's connection with the rest of the Alpha Legion - do they have any contact with any of the other warbands operating in Imperial space? Do they even agree with their methodology anymore? What do they think of Alpharius, their now-dead Primarch? These kinds of tidbits will definitely make the background more interesting, provided that they are woven into the flow of the thing.
That was a good read, do you have some sort of leader for the Silent Strike? it never hurts to flesh out a few characters for your army.
Good story, very entertaining, and makes sense. I'd like to hear about some heroes or leaders though.
Overall, good fluff, keep it up .

thanks for the kind words and good advice
i shall definitely refine the legions interactions with other forces within chaos including the real alphas who they are based on
i'll also write a paragraph or two on my leader who is a power armoured lord
here is a small extract from the battle report i'm writing for my CSM currently but i thought i'd pop it in here for now, i'm going to write more about Drachius in this fluff tonight anyway so i'll do what some films do and post his end before i introduce the character
Drachius awoke in a pit of scorched earth. The smell of burning flesh filled the air, he'd smelt it many times before but never when it was coming from him. His mind drifted back to the battle. He had led his men deep into enemy territory, coming from the rear they had an excellent view of both tau hover weapon platforms. The plan to take them both out before launching an assault on the enemy rear was clicking into place perfectly.
At the last second though a single sentry drone spotted them and before Drachius could react the cursed tau had turned there entire weaponry on his advance force. First to fall were his brave marines within his squad, heavy weapons and plasma rifle fire filled the air and with unerring accuracy all 8 brave marines including the 4 precious autocannons they carried had been blasted to oblivion. Then the tau went after Drachius himself, pounding shot after shot at him the air had been alive with the smell of plasma and massive rends were taken out of Darchius armour. When he thought the fire had ceased for a minute he sensed the massive railgun on the weapons platform turn and fire its solid shot at him. Drawing all the strength of the warp Drachius had managed to survive the shot, taking it on the chest armour but warp energy deflecting it to destroy a nearbye building.
Surveying the damage of the initial volley Drachius was badly wounded, nearing unconsciousness, but he was alive and he had "varchnar", his demon dark blade in his hand. With speed granted from the power of the warp he made his charge to the hammerhead weapon platform that had sent the railgun shot at him moments before. Cleaving the tanks armour he powered his way through it, finding its plasma generator engine core he sent the blade into the plasma, causing a huge explosion to rip through the vehicle. Drachius was thrown back from the exploded vehicle but he had achieved his part of the mission. Attempting to return to his feet to make a new charge the last thing Drachius remembered was the sound of more plasma rifle fire and his brave plasma squad who had been backing up his autocannons firing off there rounds before being cut down by the tau army surrounding them. As the shots fell around Drachius and blasted off his armour he remembered the happiness in his heart that his men had stood firing to the last despite knowing there fate was sealed. Another searing pain was the last thing Drachius could recollect.

First suggestion and, as a fluff writer, first rule.
PARAGRAPHS! Repeat after me: Paragraphs are your friend. Paragraphs are your friend. Paragraphs are your friend. Paragraphs must be double-spaced.
It will take SO much pressure off peoples' eyes. It will heighten your public appeal and make you immortal. Trust me.
paragraphs are my friend
indeed, it was a bit much for one paragraph the above
my only excuse is i wrote it quickly and posted it as i was going out last night without properly editing it
your advice is welcome and duly noted (and i paragraphed the end of Drachius)
