I was wondering who does actually know that the grey knights excist. And what does happen when someone get to hear it by accident.
Don´t mess with the dicegod
They are a super-secret arm of the Inquisition as the Imperium doesn't want the people to know about demons. If somebody is found to know about them that isn't supposed to, they are probably immediately executed to prevent them saying anything about it.
The people that know are the higher members of all branches of the Inquisition obviously, some of the senior Adeptus Mechanicus people, most marine chapter masters and possibly some of they more senior officers, very high ranking IG generals, and of course all of the highest ranking officials of the Imperium itself, then there's the forces of chaos that probably know a fair amount as well as some eldar of the Black Library, but that's just about it. All-in-all, not very many people. :sarcasm:

1500 years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the Universe
500 years ago everybody knew the world was flat
5 minutes ago you knew humans were alone on the planet
Imagine what you'll know tomorrow
Phoenix pretty much hit the nail on the head. I would say that only the chapter masters who have fought alongside the GK know of them though. They mindscrub the marines afterwards, but would probably leave the chapter master aware. As for you second question as to what happens when you find out about them, if you are a simple human, you are shot afterwards. If you are more important however, you are mindscrubbed.
Oh, by the way. The custodians of terra would know all about the GK since the Gk have conferences with the emperor himself on occasion, and the custodians wouldn't be mindscrubbed afterwards, becasue they might se another Grey knight in another month. they would be the only chapter with every member having knowledge of the Grey Knights.
Et imperator Invocato Diabolus Daemonica Exorcist!
Not all marines who fought with the GK are mind scrubbed. They wouldnt mind scrubb a marine in the first place, because then the (cant remember name) machine that puts all the information into a marines head would be a waste. So the marines know about the GK.
Firstly, who is going to see the Grey Knights fight?.. They teleport in, accomlish specific, daemon related objectives, then leave. They don't seem to hang out with other armies much in the fluff.
Secondly, if you were the Ordo Malleus, would you want everyone knowing there's a secret Imperial knightly order of uber powerful psykers? Wouldn't that secret be worth killing for? I'm guessing anyone who learns too much about the grey knights and starts spreading the information too far suffers some kind of accident.Who says marines can be mind scrubbed.. They are hypno-indoctrinated every single day to help them deal with any traumatic experiences. It would be pretty simple to just insert some new material to their regular hynotherapy tapes which encourage them to suppress whatever they've seen. If they can't be hypnotically programmed, they won't have become marines, because the brain implants require hypnotic programming to help them grow. Not all marines who fought with the GK are mind scrubbed. Well in the first war of armageddon Logan Grimnar who commanded the planet against the forces of Angron had deamon hunters fight along side his marines. And one thing led to another and now the wolves despise all Grey Knights and Inq. because they watch them of heresy, I guess for going to far(but when you have an enemy,I think you should make sure their dead). And all their worshipping of the Wolf Spirits. So at least the Wolves Remember, also I read in one of their books about them talking about GK and the Inq.
The SW's actually really hold the grudge only against the Inq. itself and not really the GK's, as they left very shortly after defeating Angron. There's evidence to suggest that Grimnar and the GK Captain(Aurellias?) actually saw pretty eye to eye as SW's go.
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
Actually, alot of people know about the Grey Knights. Its just that most people dont know what they specificly do. You have to remember in the Imperium knowledge is power, the average citizen would know VERY little about Space Marines let alone have actually seen one. Alot of IG go there whole lives without seeing a Space Marine. To the agerage citizen of the imperium Space Marines are almost mythical figures who fight in the God-Emperors divine name. Most inquisitors dont try to second SM chapters to help fight chaos, there skills are needed elsewhere, thats why the Grey Knights exist. To be a chamber millitant to the Ordo Mallus. Its not like Joe Smith of some backwater planet knows about most chapters of marines and can identify them on sight. Now there are exceptions to the rules. Like Ultramar, altho that is unique in the imperium. As the smurfs own a ' proivence' within the Imperium. And most Marine Home worlds would know about SM altho even then they are still usually refered to in mythical tones. In the Imperium EVERYTHING is on a need to konw baises and most people dont need to know ANYTHING. Remember the thought for the day " Strength through Ignorance" =o]
FluffMaster on a mission to turn people to the Sisters of battle, yes folks it's all about SoB squads in Repressors with lots of flamer templates for the win.
I would have to disagree that a lot of people know about the Grey Knights. They are a highly secret organisation in terms of whether they exist and what they do; and most of the people who know about them believe that they are just another Space Marine chapter that frequently has dealings with the Inquisition. The only people who are likely to know of their existence, let alone their true purpose, are members of the Inquisition, the High Lords of Terra, the Chapter Masters of other Space Marine chapters, and the Adeptus Mechanicus personnel attached to the Inquisition itself. Even then, probably the only people who understand the full object and purpose of the Grey Knights are the inquisitors and the Chapter Masters. It's questionable, actually, whether even the High Lords know of the chapter's existence as its creation was ordered by the Emperor Himself, bypassing standard Imperial protocol.
According to Grey Knights, by Ben Counter, the Adepta Sororitas are also aware of the Grey Knights and their purpose in the Imperium, so it would seem that the different branches of the Inquisition are not completely autonomous from each other.
