Help? I'm writing fluf for my new chapter, The Emperor's Talons, and I'm doing up the history... what is the "Current date" in Warhammer 40k?
Edit: And would the 22nd founding be an appropriate time for a successor of the Imperial Fists to be created or would earlier/later be better?

As far as I can tell it's somewhere between M40.999 and M41.000, in other words we're about to go from 40,000 to 41,000.
Edicius is partially correct; it’s true that the current Warhammer timeline has stopped somewhere during the year of 40,999, likely because adding another year would mean the game should more appropriately be titled Warhammer 41,000 which Games Workshop is not interested in; however, that makes the current millennium .M41 and not .M40 as suggested by Edicius – just like we’re in the 21st century now even though we’ve only passed the year 2000.
So, to be entirely correct, the current year in the Warhammer universe is written either 999.M41 or 40,999. The exact date is tougher to pinpoint, not least of all because of the effect of warp travel which heavily distorts the Imperial calendar.
However, I should add that even though the official timeline stops in 999.M41, some Black Library books are actually occurring at a later date than this – I’m thinking of the Commissar Cain series, whose fictional narrator tells the stories as flashbacks to the end of the 41st millennium, meaning that he is actually writing the books in .M42. Very confusing, I know.
