In a battle, can you field the Space Marines aginst the Imperial Guard or the Inquisition?
No reason why not.
My buddy and I play IG vs IG and IG vs SM all the time, mainly 'cos we're the most regular players in our area.
If you're looking for fluff reasons, you could a) take a look in codex:demonhunters which has a list of reasons why demonhunters would fight any of the other given armies or b) invent one yourself...
EG it's a tactical simulation organised by the SM chaptermaster and IG General to prepare the guardsmen for facing a chaos force. or the commanding officer of one side has turned traitor, and must be brought to justice/purged etc.
I have too many armies to list in my signature!
If you want to come up with a fluffy reason.. Here are some.
The guard regiment has turned traitor, or is suspected to have done so. For example, battlefield communication has gone down. The guardsmen have gone out of contact and high command has summarized that they might have defected, so the marines/inquisition are sent in to clean up the mess. Whether the guardsmen are actually traitors or not is irrelevant, the forces opposing them aren't going to reason with them.
The Inquisitior is a radical or ultra puritan and has led the guardsmen into a trap because he feels they might be tainted, or because a high ranking figure in the regiment is close to finding out his agenda and needs to be silenced, or some other such reason. The guardsmen must escape the trap.
In the case of a marine vs marine or guard vs guard battle, the engagement is actually a simulated mock battle excercise. Sophisticated stun and gas weapons are being used instead of live weapons. Of course, grappling and punching (hand to hand) is encouraged, this is the 41st millenium, and in the case of marines, any broken bones will heal back in a day or two.
I used to play in a club that refused to permit Imperials to fight Imperials. So as one of the (rare) non-Imperials, that meant every game I got stuck playing against Space Marines, because there weren't enough non-Space Marines to go around. I got very good at killing marines but the game got very, very dull for me. Keep variety in the game, fight everyone!
As the others have said, it’s absolutely possible to field all armies against each other, even ones that under normal circumstances would not have engaged in fighting. It might be a mock battle for practise purposes (though I’d hate to be the Guardsmen pitted against Space Marines for ‘practise’ – those Marines have a mighty powerful punch, and they aren’t usually known to hold back even during exercises), it might be the result of a misunderstanding, it might be caused by an evil Tzeenchian plot, what have you. It’s definitely possible.Originally Posted by Lord Marshall Zarof
As for JOHIRA experiencing that some gamers refuse to have Imperials fighting Imperials, that’s unfortunately the result of ignorance and lack of imagination, and there’s just no way helping some people. The fluff has plenty of examples of loyalists fighting each other; one of my favourite battles of that nature can be found in the Black Library novel ‘Grey Knights’ and actually has the Inquisition fighting the Inquisition and the Imperial Guard due to the abilities of a rogue Inquisitor to convince an army of Guardsmen and Sisters of Battle that the Grey Knights are Traitor Marines.
In the end the confusion is resolved when someone notices that both sides are apparently screaming ‘For the Emperor!’ while charging – however, at this point in time there unfortunately aren’t many Sisters of Battle or Imperial Guardsmen left alive. Poor guys.

IF you couldnt do Imperial/Inqui Vs Imperial/Inqui... that would be really stupid... cause 40% of Games Workshop money is made out of Space marines, lets say that 10% is made of IG and Inquisition, so one of those player could only play vs 50% of the players... that would be lame
and besides another good reason is that persae a sm commander didn't like the tone of a IG commander and decided to teach the welp what humility is.
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LOOK AT MY BLOG!
Rep people if they help you!!!
even battling against the exact same army list is okay
the games supposedly about tactics right?
In the night,
armed with lasguns,
and the light of the emporer,
they stood tall,
in the twilight,
the galaxy burns,
a cunning tribute,
to the god of man,
all hail the Emperer!
orkstomper I just have to say this
I am one of those people
And it really doesn't matter who fights who as long as you all have fun.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
Are you those people?
