I was wondering somewhat about the Imperium's Naval fleet and their non- warp travels. Is it possible to have large ships who do not have as many weapons and not as good of armour but will have a more powerful engine that will make space travel a little more faster if you do not go through the warp. Because in my fluff I was hoping that my Imperial Guards army and their allies could conquer more planets in the Halo Zone in the name of the Emperor.
Sadly, having bigger engines wouldn't make any difference. The ship would accelerate faster, but since there is no air resistance in space anyway, big engines does not necessarily = big speed.
It is impossible, under our current understanding of physics, to travel faster than light just using conventional engines. This means that, even if your ships can travel at 99.9% of lightspeed.. the journeys between stars could still take years to complete. My advice, drop this idea.. it's not feasable.
But why shouldn't they be able to use warp jumps around the halo stars?
Wow.. you learn something new every day.
I guess it's not going to be easy then.. Even if you could conquer those worlds, without the ability to travel to and from them they're not going to be that useful.
