I was just wondering, can anyone explain the battlesuit system to me please? I dont understand why a battlesuit is called XV88, XV8 or XV25, i cant remember Shadowsuns model.
This isnt a stupid question, i know that the battlesuits are more than just "different models", the numbers and XV have a more in depth meaning to them.
So if you can answer my question, where did you find this information?
All battlesuits have XV in their name. The first number in their designation is the size of the battlesuit (ie XV-17 would be smaller than an XV-25 which would be smaller than an XV-8 and so on).
The second number isn't as clear. I think it has something to do with it's overall class. For example, Commander Shadowsun's XV-22 suit. The second 'two' indicates that it is experimental, so then the second number could be a number of things, depending upon which number it is. If the second number is a 2, then it's experimental. So then an XV-82 suit would be any suit of comperable size to a Crisis suit that is undergoing testing, meaning there are likely XV-82A, XV-82B and so on. Then when it finishes testing it is given a number to show what it is. An XV-88 therefor is a suit that is about the size of a Crisis suit (First eight) that is armed with heavy weaponry (?Second eight?).
The XV-8 crisis suit's lack of a number either signifies it is the first size 8 battlesuit or that can be fitted to fit such a variety of roles that adding a designator to it would be pointless.
I think that's all there really is to the number system. As far as what the 'XV' stands for, I have no idea. I'll leave that to someone who knows.
Note that most of this is my own interpretation formulated by reading the Tau Empire codex (Most from the special entry about Shadowsun's XV-22, that's where I found the 'mass class' and the second two signifying it was undergoing testing), and there is likely a more official source somewhere. Does this sound right all ye' Fluff masters?

Well, I think you got it all basicly.
I'm not to keen on the subject, found this on Wiki adn I believe it's accurate.
Battlesuits are the main equipment of higher class warriors found in the Fire Caste. They are exoskeletal suits that give the wearer extra strength, better sensors, and more protection, as well as the ability to carry heavier weapons into battle.
All battlesuits of the same type are given a designation: XV, followed by two digits. The first digit indicates the mass class of the suit: '1' being a complete exoskeletal version of standard Tau body armour, while '8' represents the heaviest available battlesuits. The second digit indicates the role or status of the particular suit design: '2' marking an experimental design, '5' representing stealth capability, and '8' being heavy fire support. Variations of a suit may be given other numbers as well.
