So I'm trying to write up some fluff for putting together an army. One of the ideas (out of many) I've had was an Eldar Pirate army.
However, finding fluff on the Corsairs is tough. There simply isn't much. So, I turn to the fluff masters -
I'm trying to justify being able to make a Corsair army in 40K, but I'm not sure what kinds of units to incorporate. Perhaps it's only easily done in a BFG game?
- Do Aspect Warriors ever turn to Piracy? Or would they leave their Aspects back at the temples when they left the Craftworld?
- Do Pirate fleets only operate in space? Would they ever make landfall?
- Would they be likely to have a Farseer or Warlocks with them? Constructs?
The troops I think would be most appropriate are:
- I think not. Aspect warriors are following the path of the Warrior, while Corsairs are following the path of the outcast. I believe the two are incompatable.. though there's nothing to say you couldn't have allied aspect warriors, or better yet, proxy aspect warriors for something else.
- I think pirate fleets make landfall.. the new codex has a couple of examples of them attacking and even single handedly clearing maiden worlds which have been colonized by other races.
- Farseers and warlocks are hard to explain, especailly the former.. I think they'd fall into the 'allies' category if you wanted to use them. The Autarch is, I think, a much fluffier choice for such an army. As for constructs.. I think you could wing it if the constructs had some kind of connection to the crew. For example, if the wraithlord is piloted by an ancestor of the pirate prince/autarch.
The Autarch (as a proxy for a pirate prince, like Yriel)
Guardians (perhaps individualized a bit to make them look more like random outcasts than military units.)
Dire Avengers (proxied as more elite members of the crew with better weapons and armour)
Rangers and Pathfinders (Enormously appropriate.)
Vypers (Raiding vehicles)
War Walkers (Same)
And possibly a tank or two.

When I was toying with the idea of a Corsair Eldar army, I considered taking several squads of Strom Guardians mounted in Wave Serpents. I also thought that a couple Harlequin squads mounted in Falcons would be useful for CC (Harlequins are probably the most fluffy CC unit for a pirate army). I thought that most of the list should be CC and fast moving as it seemed to suit a corsair raid. You could probably include aspects and psykers in your army, but you may need to explain how they got there. Off the top of my head... Maybe a whole Craftworld turned to Piracy in order to survive after being nearly destroyed in an a battle or some kind of accident. Just an idea...
"What do Humans know of our pain? We have sung songs of lament since before your ancestors crawled on their bellies from the sea."
- Farseer Eldrad Ulthran of Craftworld Ulthwe
Hey, I'm making a Corsair army also. I should mention I've got a lot of eldar, and really haven't tabulated points limits yet, but I'll tell you what I have/am going for.
Also, I think Aspect Warriors are ok to use, but just a few. The way I figure it: Corsair Eldar would act in support of nearby craftworlds in destress. So Aspect warriors represent the combined might of your corsairs and a friendly craftworld.
Also, Farseers and warlocks are okay by me also! this is my HQ and how I justify it: Autarch on Jetbike -Captain/Commander of the fleet
Autarch with no Xtra Transport ability - First officer
Ta-da! Farseers make excellent navigators through the warp. Just because He's taken as a farseer and does farseer like things, doesn't mean he's ACTUALLy a farseer. 40k is full of these sorts of things - like special characters from one space marine chapter leading another because the player gave them a new name -Marneus Calgar as "Red Rick" or something like that.
Okay, so yes,. three HQs in my fleet, all of which are important members of it.
Then we've got 32 jetbikes. Organized either in 4 squads of eight or 8 squads of four.
and twelve Vypers. 6 missile launchers, 3 Bright Lances, and 3 Starcannons. They can be reorganized into squads of two also.
And then there are 5 squads of Guardians, all with warlocks and with a waveserpent. And a squad of storm guardians with wave serpent and warlock - this is the squad the first officer joins. I tak the regular, non-upgraded autarch because he fits in well with the squad and for somereason I think he's cool looking.
Alright, finally, I've got a scout party of 3 Warwalkers and 5 Pathfinders/rangers, and Heavy support of 3 Falcons.
I've got plenty more than that -aspect warriors, wraithlords, harlequins, etc. But that's my "Corsairs". Anything else I use I justify by saying they're fighting along side eachother. Obviously, I like apocalypse sized battles with my corsairs so as I can use all of it at once!
Hope I helped! sorry I talk so much!
I think you could wing having Dark reapers in the force on the basis that they could be elite Corsairs with weaponry for support during planet fall.
If you converted an entire army you could make most of the Aspects work.
I could see Eldar Corsairs having acsess to all kinds of strange and exotic equipment that could give them comparable advantages to their Aspect brethern.
Of course in fluff terms your army would probably be highly renowned if the troops were that specialised.
I think it would be extremely unlikely that a farseer or the Avatar would ever be in a Corsair army.
Arise! Arise, o dead thread! Arise and return to liiiiife!!!
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Damn it. I always get drawn in by the bloody Necroposting
You're just too willing to help, mate.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
I also find it amazing that someone would trawl through the archives for threads dating back three years and then post on them.
Its kind of like finding an antique book and adding your own notes. You just don't do it.
