So I was re reading the rules for the malanthrope today and I had a cool idea. Make a themed army of the clean up crew. Obviously this would be lead by the malanthrope. I was thinking rippers and another "worker" nid for troops and a large vaccum nid for heavy support. The large creature would be one giant blob kinda like in starship troopers, but not super intelligent. He is carried along on the back of some large worker nid. The worker nids feed the corpes to the blobs and they hold the biomass until they place it in a pool for suction up to the ship.
I was thinking that the digester creature could detach from the other creature who carries it. The carrying creature would be all CC and would rely on his size and speed when not carying the digester.
The digester would have 2 different attacks. One where he spits up the "soft" biomass for something like a 12" assault 1 blast S3 Ap-, Pinning. And a 24" shot of made of bone fragments, assault 2 S4 Ap5, pinning. The reason they are pinning is because getting shot with the remains of your former commrades would be pretty devastating.
This kind of army would be best suited to small games. Mostly under 1000 points. As anyone left on a plant after the war would most likely be a small group. These nids could destroy the last pockets of resistance as they mop up all the dead stuff.
Just a thought. comments are encouraged.
Should this be in the fluff forum or the rules discussion forum?
The only beef I have with this idea is that, fluff-wise, you'd never be able to explain how your clean-up crew is fighting an enemy force. Normally, the 'Nid advance forces attack and destroy everything and the clean-up crew...cleans up. Digests it. Since Nids aren't known for being sloppy with their genocide, it's highly unlikely that a malanthrope would ever see combat.

Come, sons of LO! Kneel before Poodle!
Mr_Wayne: "Some people believe that the World Eaters do not field any ranged weaponry. Those people often die at a distance."
Or, they could have been in some underground complex, very armoured, and with some sort of psychic contraption to mask their presence on the planet, then, when the main Tyranid army left, they popped out of the bunker, and are trying to get off the planet.
I play my 40k with friendly fire.
Finally fixed the link!
Haha, I think this is a cool idea. It would be tricky to run a competitive list this way though, since a lot of your choices are off limits.
Troops would have to be mainly rippers, winged rippers for fast attack... warriors would be okay I guess, since somebody has to supervise the digesting process. I bet you could get away with having some gaunts, too actually. Maybe they're just waiting for their turn to be reabsorbed into the hive ships.
Your vacuum-nid is a funny idea. The tricky part is finding a way to represent it in the game without needing to use the creature design rules. I think you could find a way to morph out a carnifex that would fit the role, then build yourself a "giant overweight ripper" model to represent him, and voila!
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
Jakester hit the nail on the head as to why (I believe) the worker nids would have to fight.
Since my digester idea is totally not in the codex and would require rules of its own, I decided to modify some already existing nids to fit the new theme.
Reaper fex: Both arms are long and thin and resemble the venom cannon. However, its covered by hooks on the side and spikes on the top(and doesnt shoot.) Some worker warriors (each with 2 sets of rending claws) pick up dead bodies and stick them on the hooks and spikes on the reaper fexes arms. Then reaper fex can then carry the bodies to a digesting pool. Once again, the malanthrope can be there to lead and lots of rippers can accompany them as troops choices. The only problem is what to count the reaper fexes weapons as. I envision only two arms, but they are hooked into all 4 sockets to support the extra weight of the dead things. Im stuck trying to come up with a special rule or profile for them that would make that fex be even somewhat viable in CC.
So I tried to use existing models so that making the clean up crew would be a lot easier. However, Im still thinking about rules for the digester, and a possible model.
Any more comments would be nice.
