I need some help putting together some background for a storyline campaign, and would appreciate any assistance given. So far I have determined that we have around a dozen players, the following armies included:
Disciples of Hephaestus (My Space Marines chapter)
Orks (Me if someone needs a game and odd numbers turn up)
Iron Wolves (An Iron Hands/Space Wolves cross)
Chaos - Emperor's Children
And several Tau, Tyranid and Imperial Guard players.
The campaign will be very small forces. I have adapted the Lord of the Ring Battle Companies and Warhammer Path to Glory rules to Warhammer 40,000 and the average force starts out with a handful of models (ie. Space Marines get 4, Orks 7).
I know thus far, that the campaign will be set on a single world, New Portsmouth, which will likely be a hive or civilised world. As you can probably tell from the small forces, this will likely play like Necromunda. I'm running a campaign like this for the players who have only a handful of painted models and this will allow them to gradually build up their forces.
I'm thinking that New Portsmouth will have a standing peacekeeping force of Imperial Guard, and I will need to work in the Space Marines separately. I don't know enough about Ultramarines, Space Wolves...or Iron Wolves, suggestions please, but my guys will be there to look for STC (Standard Template Construct) technology.
There will be corrupted citizens, corrupted by Slaanesh, who will be the Emperor's Children.
What I really need ideas for is how the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Tau, Tyranids and Chaos Marines get to this place. I know that in terms of physically transportation, Tyranids and Orks generally drop down and infest a place, Tyranids by nests and Orks by spores, but how the hell do the other races hope to get there? And what are their motives?
I also need reasons for these small little bands of guys running around and engaging in streetfighting, and explanations for their equipment gradually improving and increasing in numbers.
If anymore information is needed, just ask and I will post some more.
Ideas very much appreciated and needed!
So let me get this straight, you adapted the fantasy and lord of the rings rules to play a game of nercomunda with 40K troops? wow. It sounds like a cool idea, but it may be too complicated for the new people. You may just want to play with combat patrol rules or just use necromunda rules. With either set you can adjust the points and still be able to play a decent game that everyone can follow.
Im not sure what the STC technology you talked about was, but that may be a good reason why other SMs may be there. And if it isnt, then make it into a good reason why they would be there. Tyranids could have been there before and have been in hibernation while people rebuilt, only to wake up as the fighting started. Do chaos really need a reason to be there? They want to hurt stuff..... Tau may want the tech. for themselves, for the greater good. Eldar are like the space downers, they always want to stop somebody from something, raising that daemon, stealing that tech, killing that leader, etc, etc.... And finally orks, they sit where ever they are and see a fight going on and wonder "why arent we there IN that fight?"
As for how they get there, they all have space ships of some kind. that wouldnt be a problem at all. They could easily make it to the planet.
And for why they are in small bands, thats a tough one. Maybe thats all thats left, or most of the fighting is going on somewhere else, maybe you could even work that into a battle, that would be cool. Have one team try to run through a larger battle between two armies without dying to get to some objective on the other side.
I'll be putting up what was in their creative writing soon, but to summise, what will likely be going on is that a Chaos Champion is trying to complete a ritual that requires a certain number of sacrifices to be made, and hence he is preying on the citizens of this world. There'll be covert assassinations, not full scale war, because the sacrifices must be long and ceremonial (expect interrupt the ceremony style objectives).
Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Tyranids and Chaos I can work in. I need more specific ideas for Eldar, Tau and Orks.
