Xerxes is gonna love this thread.
Lets make a quick list.
Emperor Paul Muad'Dib = THE Emperor
Bene Gesserit = Ecclesiarchy a bit, because they are evil women... >_<
Lower Qizarate(sp?) clerk = Administratum
old Sadaukar(before decline of training) = Space Marines
Guild = Navigator Guild a bit, because they do shipthings... >_<;
Mentats = Servitors, you know, no machines allowed...
Butlerian Jihad = End of the Dark Age of Technology
That's how far I got...
The influences on 40k are just too broad to mention.. I agree with you on a lot of those, but there are so many sources which have been borrowed from I think it's simplistic to put it all down to Herbert and Dune.
Okay then, what are the other influences?
Space Wolves = vikings
Inquisition = the Inquisition itself, although the two organisations aren't exactly similar
No reference to the Fremen jihads at all.
Although the banning on AI is similar to that established after the Butlerian Jihad, here is nothing in the Dune series to suggest that technology is mystical... you don't hear talk about the "Machine Spirit" of Paul's energy shield, do you?
And the Bene Gesserit are far from the Adepta Soritas. The fomer is obsessed with breeding and not a lot else. The letter is a militant nunnery.
And also, as much as "the Emperor" and "Emperor Paul-Muad'Dib" sound similar, they're not. When did the 40K Emperor suddenly have a revelation of his powers brought on by a drug high? When was he ever trying to avoid war? When was he overtly sad that it had happened? When did Paul get incapacitated and put into a vast life-sustaining machine?
And where on earth is 40K's Shai-Hulud?
As Mantis said, the influences for 40K are far too broad to be able to pigeonhole them.
Didn't Paul get turned into a giant immortal worm?
Lesse. Black Templars - The Knights Templar, Konrad Curze - Colonel Kurtz/Batman, Prospero - The Tempest (wasn't there a mythological Greek cyclops called Magnus as well?)
Tsarist Russia/Nazi Germany - The Imperium
People's Republic of China - The Tau Empire
Orcs - Orks
Marneus Calgar - Julius Caesar (Et tu, Alpharius?)
Macharius - Alexander the Great
Necrons - The Terminator
Cypher - A whole bunch of conspiracy theories.

Mr_Wayne: "Some people believe that the World Eaters do not field any ranged weaponry. Those people often die at a distance."
lol the sheer number of times I've been told tyranids are cheap rip offs of Aliens from Alien vs Predator. Tyranids came FIRST.
I know thats not the topic of this thread but I thought I'd point it out.
So when was Dune made?
Eldar mythology is identical to viking mythology. Well the part about chaos is. I don't know where the hell our tie with necrons comes from.
Ymir is also the giant from which all of the universe is made, the Yngir being the stargods might be telling about the nature of the physical universe.
Sound like a Ynnead, Rhandra Dahdra, Necron apocalypse clusterbomb to me.
Actually the Rhana Dandra is the fight against chaos.
"Where the material plane battles the warp and both are destroyed". Not an exact quote but meh.
But yeah Rhana Dandra + Phoenix Lords and Viking Mythology is identical.
Me as well. Between the Tau and the Necrons, it appears that GW is dropping down the notch in terms of background.
OMG the TAU ARE LIKE TOTALLY GOOD
OMGNOES. THE NECRONS ARE THE LEET TOTALLY EVIL DUDEZ OF DOOM
Heck-origionally Chaos wasnt evil at all ...just completely chaotic and a threat to the fabric of life/society/existance.
Another influence is obviously the bible-the Horus Heresy and the fall of Mankind. Also tons of imagry from Egyptian mythos. Plus I see Celtic influence and always wondered whether "Cadia" was a bastardization of "Canadian"-although the fact im a Canuck might have something to do with that.:shifty:
