I'm trying to scrape together a few fluff thoughts on my new army that I'm starting to collect (Obliterator Cult-themed LatD). I want the majority of the mutants to be affected with the virus (and modelled as such) but not in the same way as true Obliterators.
The real quandary lies with the HQ choices... do I make it a batch of ACs with the virus and all the dæmonic modcons to make them almost-Obliterators (Dæmonic Resilience, Dæmonic Aura & Armour/Terminator Armour, Kai Gun), an Arch Heretic with the same setup (reasoning being he's an ex-Warsmith or something along those lines), or do I make him a sorcerer playing around with the virus and its effects (powers like Gift of Chaos at least), and how far down the road of the virus should I take him?
Or if anyone has any other ideas I'd be grateful to hear them.
I say go for it! You could come up with some very interesting and fluffy weapon/gift/power combinations that reflect Obliterator-esque traits... but I can't really decide if a trio of Obliterator-like CSMs would be best or a single Sorcerer-type with Mark of Tzeentch and powers like Bolt of Change, Inferno Bolts, Wind of Chaos etc... I'm thinking maybe the single Sorcerer is best -- of course he would be modelled like an Oblit and the MoT would let him auto-pass Psychic tests but otherwise would look/feel like an Oblit. Here's some potential gifts:
Mark of Tzeentch -- So he auto-passes all psychic tests
Wind of Chaos -- For up close encounters
Doombolt -- Kinda like short-range Heavy Bolter
Bolt of Change -- Tank-killer
Terminator Armour -- Mmm
Kai Gun -- Maybe instead of Doombolt
Of course he'll cost like 145 points and in return you'll get something that doesn't even really meet an Oblit in performance, but its extremely fluffy.

You might remember I wrote some very similar fluff a while back, though I never ended up finishing the army. The conversions were a bit overwhelming. Still, here's a link to the fluff:
I personally used a sorceror, as I think it makes the most sense.. It's implied in Inquisitor that Obliterators go pretty mad by the final stages of transformation. Therefore, I think it makes sense to have a non infected leader who can still reason and make decisions.. It also allows for the nicely disturbing possibility that the mutants are being psychically compelled, and are really just unfortunate victims.
Alternately, using the LatD version of the mark of Tzeentch, you could have a trio of aspiring champion level sorcerors. They don't have to actually be Tzeentchian, since they wouldn't have the 'auto pass all psychic tests' ability.. you could just say they were minor librarians, or worse, mindless puppets of a far greater evil which manifests its power through them.
