I apologize if this has been asked before, I tried doing a search but nothing came up. Additionaly, the question may seem strange, but I am interested.
I am curious if Space Marines are able to have children? One of the stages of becoming a space marine is the armor fusing to the skin, is this... everywhere? Thereby not allowing the Emperor's Finest to have children.
Additionaly, It also seems unlikely since Capters are constantly at battle or doing other missions or sitting at their Chapter's Keep.
However, my question remains, even though it would seem very unlikely, could it be possible?
Just curious as my friend and I might be trying to write some short fiction. Whether it can happen or not can be worked out either way in the story.
Cheers and thanks for the help!
The only chance a Marine has to father children, is to do it before he becomes a Marine. Typically it seems that candidates are around 14-16 years old when picked up by a chapter, which gives them about a year (if they're lucky, or unlucky depending on your point of view) to father a child. While I suspect artificial insemination is possible in the 40K universe, and the level of technology they're at, it would almost certainly be restricted to the absolute highest echelons of society - those not known for becoming Marines.
After a boy has been chosen to undergo the trials that are a part of the training, there would be absolutely no further opportunities; and after a few of the alterations his body is subjected to, no longer is capable physically or emotionally to do so.

I mean, if it is fused to thier skin, how to they have a turd?
And I imagine after 500 odd years of liberating the galaxy, that armour would be a bit on the nose. A bit like the smell of a plaster cast on that broken limb during summer.
Do you think it will have a built in deoderiser?
And shaving. Do all SM eventually die when thier beards build up in thier armour and strangle them?
Some food for thought....... (insert smilie face here)

I'm pretty confident that the power armour is not fused to their skin, and what you are talking about is a chitin-like endoskeleton they have where their ribs should be. Also, to probably lighten things up on marines, and to try and be as mature about this discussion...
I don't think that marines can be castrated, considering that is where we would get most of our hormones and they would need testes to further the whole boy-to-marine thing. However, when Marines become Marines, they become celabit(excuse my spelling). The only family, and friends that they know are other marines, and any form of sexual interaction may be considered a chance for Slaanesh to corrupt their minds.
Now, for the son of a marine, you can probably do a clone-son, like Abbadon is to Horus (or is he?). Or you can have the child be conceived before the man became an astartes. And if you want to go further, he can be the bastard-son of a Red Corsair; a marine who has left his chapter - maybe even a fallen angel.
Anyway, I hope this helps for you and your friend's fiction, but remember, the power armour itself is not fused to the marine, because if it was, it would be pretty hard to take care of. However, I think it is pyschoactive to the marine, and that might be the 'fusing to the marine/armor' which you speak of. Also, there is an endoskeleton of chitinous material where there ribs should be, and this can be considered the armor you are talking about- because it would be VERY painful to go through.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
And also, alot like what astronauts have- pouches to absorb fecal matter and urine, Marines have that too.
The answer in short is NO.
Now too clear a few misconceptions up.
Space Marines do not have their armor attached to their skin, they have sockets attacjed to their black carapace theat allows them to plu into their armor. The black carapace is a sheet of black material (like plastic but grown in incubation chambers) inserted under thir skin in their chest. They do not have chitin, chitin is on the exterior, a space marine's chest cavaty has the ribs fused together (ossified) into a solid impenatrable mass of bone protecting the vital orgams.

I cannot help but smile at the number of threads we get on this subject. I guess it's something that everyone wants to know about the Emperor's Finest at some point in time...perhaps it should be incorporated into a potential future FAQ?
Unfortunately, I'm not qualified to speak on this subject much so I think I'll hand the floor over to those who are...
If Space Marines weren't able to have kids then the chaos legion Emperors Children wouldn't have half as much fun. Unless Slaanesh mutated them on...

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
But the carapace under the skin is where it seems my reading comprehension went haywire, I did not pick up on it being situated on the chest. My wording/phrasing was just bad I guess.
Thanks for the help everyone, just thought it would be interesting since (as I figured) it is not something that 'happens.'
