I've began to work on building a large 3 way battle between Necrons, Imperial Guard and a third party yet to be chosen (juggling Tau and Eldar right now). Anyways, to the point.
My first step is to build a Necron Army. Now because I want to associate a full story leading up and progressing through the battle I need to begin by having appropriate names for the squads and independant characters.
For many armies this would not be an issue. There is a whole slew of fluff and ideas for every army in warhammer 40k... exept the necrons it seems.
Can anyone provide some ideas? Even better would be if you could direct me to some fluff that may help in this capacity.
Thanks for any help.
The Necrons themselves probably wouldn't be naming themselves, but a decent idea would be to name the squads/ICs from the enemy's point of view.
For example - some Imperial Guardsmen, not knowing they are fighting Necrons exactly, may name a squad of Immortals "the Deathbringers," or something akin to that... Wraiths would be "Shades," and things like that.
However, it seems to me like the names already attached to them - Warriors, Immortals, etc. - are already names that the average Guardsmen would call them. Immortals because they are really hard to kill, Warriors because they are the most common, Wraiths because they pass through walls, etc. etc.
Just something to think about. Necrons aren't really a very individual sort of army, so it's hard to even justify giving them names.
Try refering to the fluff on Gamesworkshop's web site, under the stuff on medusa V. The have a name for the lord but thats about it.
2500pts Emperors Children
1000pts Dark Eldar Cabal of Agony Eternal
Also from another point of view...if you put eldar into the game try thining up some eldar names for the units as the Eldar and the Necrontyr have a long history together. Just a thought
Thanks everyone. The number idea may work. I think I'll modify the idea slightly and mix up the metalic colours of the squads a bit as well. "Copper Squad 1 advance. Silver Squad 2 flank north." sort of an idea. The fluff for the necron army I think will be fairly dry and too the point seeing as thier emotions have been numbed to the point of being non-existant.
I'd still want to find a name for the necron lord in the army however. While the troops may follow his orders wordlessly I'd want something the deceiver would refer to him as when he deligates duties.
I've posted the current army I'm looking at building in the necron army list forum. If anyone wants to have a look and give me some constructive criticism on the list it would be appreciated =)
P.S - If you have seen any good conversion ideas for the models in the list I'd love to be directed to them. I've found a great conversion idea for tomb spiders on this forum earlier this week, I'd love something for the destroyers and heavy destroyers.
I was wondering about necron names the other day. I don't have the codex to hand, but isn't the idea that they were a race whose souls were trapped within the confines of metallic bodies. They hate all life as it reminds them of their own fate, and so have a huge desire to kill everything that moves...
I was sure they'd all remember their past and therefore their names. I thought the idea was that they had been so twisted by the C'tan that they obey orders almost instinctively, but still aware enough to suffer?
I agree, that the lord won't have his OWN name, but the enemy could have one for him. If your lord is specific enough that soldiers might remember what he looks like, they'll whisper about him.
Maybe a name that connects somehow to his role. Is he on a destroyer body? Call him "The Deathglider." Hiding behind ranks with a rez orb? How bout, "The Shadow-master?"
Just a few random thoughts.
I always said if I was going to start Necrons I'd name the squads in binary or possibly hex. Waaay dorky, I know, but it'd be cool.
Ex. Necron Warrior Squad 10010011 moves to take the objective.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
