So here's the idea. I'm converting some Tau plasma guns onto a Demolisher for use as plasma cannon sponsons ( see the conversion forum for pics! ), but I'm trying to figure out the fluff that allows them to be there in the first place. Either: IG scientists are field researching experimental weapons scavanged off of fallen Crisis Suits, the regiment bought them from some Kroot mercenaries, or the regiment bought/bartered/fought for some renegade Tau ( Commander Farsight? ) for them. Whatdya think?
*Edit* It's okay if you don't think it's do-able: I've got enough heavy bolter bits around to make use of as well :-)
Being the IG, they do tend to wing it with whatever they can get their hands on.
Damocles gulf veterans/stranded people would seem to work. Jury rigged Tau weapondry onto their verhciles after the originals either ran out of ammo or carked it due to dis-repair.
As mentioned, the Imperium doesn't like alien technology, and standard mechanicus doctrine states that alien technology is dangerous and corrupting to use. However, there's plenty of examples of guardsmen in the field jury rigging alien tech or picking up discarded weapons.. The commisar doesn't have to know about it.
The Adeptus Mechanicus is against alien technology, however there are renegade Tech Priests who play with those kinds of toys anyway. Lots of them. It would not be at all outside the bounds of possibility to have several of them co-opt your regiment as a testing ground for their experiments. Even so you should place them somewhere that is far removed from more central authority.
