i read somewhere that the kroot consume their kills and then assimilates the dna of the species. that sort of sounds like the tyranid. i was thinking, maybe the kroot are a result of some tyranid spores ending up on a planet where they weren't supposed to so they evolved on their own without the inflience of the hive mind. so what do people think? it sort of makes sense.
although, that said, the whole biological starship thing does tie in nicely.... you could be on to something....
Though similar ,there is no fluff connection between kroot and tyranids. In fact there was a WD out during the promotion of Kill Team that featured fluff of kroot tyranid hunters. They even started growing tyranid guns on their bodies. Kroot assimilation of genetic material is a little different than the tyranid. While Kroot can alter individuals in wildly differing ways (depending on what they eat), tyranids are mass-developed from hive fleet to hive fleet. The little nid organisms that eat all living matter go back to the big momma ship which in turn grows new, little baby nids using the genetic material it has assimilated. A single nid can eat every species in the galaxy and never change. Only newly created nids get genetic traits.
Also, fluff suggests the hive-ships only use alien genetic material in the creation of new nids if it is genetically advantageous to do so. Eldar psychic awesomeness = zoanathropes for example. A half retarded turtle race of aliens would serve no purpose for nids other than food. Kroot on the other hand, will inevitably gain the characteristics of whatever genetic material they assimilate.
Hope that clears that up.
yes, thank you. that does clear things up a bit.
Also, the Kroot have a certain fear of consuming Tyranid corpses. There's a WD article on it, I belive. The Kroot have an instinctual desire to evolve, to consume, to grow. As do the tyranids, but to an entirely higher level. Combining them would consume the Kroot, degenerating them into ravenous beasts, due to the power of the hunger that they would inherit. It is for that reason that consumption of the Tyranids is forbidden amongst kroot.
Also.. the deadly Tyranid phage cells gives them diarrhoea.
I'm sorry, I just made that up.

The Kroot: You are what you eat.

Kroot tend to be genetic parasites essentially, provoking their evolution with data from other folks.
Tyranids are engineered. They take raw materials they capture, reprocess them and make entirely new entities. That biovore might have some basic ork DNA for example (see spore production), but its also probably got bits of Artillery Officer Joe of the Cadian First National and other little bits.
Kroot eat something, and adapt the DNA to themselves. An individual tyranid doesn't eat, even Rippers just scarf something down and then go and get themselves melted in the digestion pools when they're 'full'. Kroot have shapers, overseeing what should be eaten, and so on. Tyranids take -everything- and make use of -everything-. Those turtle aliens? You might see better carapace on the gaunts, or amphibious stuff. If its of no use to the tyranids, they'll twist it and mangle it until it is of use.
Thats why the tyranids are feared and the kroot are disdained.
Well the kroot fluff was pretty much dropped due to low model sales. Not entirely their fault by the way. Their lack of a competetive army list is more to blame.
I like kroot fluff quite a bit actually. I'd actually play them if they didn't fight worse than a brain damaged porcupine that happens to be a masochist...
There is some great kroot fluff out there..
I like the bit in Xenology where it implies Kroot developed starship technology after eating an expedition of orks which crashed on Petch. I guess a warsphere is just a giant Rokk really.
I think it's very unlikely the kroot have anything to do with the Tyranids.. For one, they're avians, they're descended from bird like creatures and it's obvious in their appearance.. Tyranids are like a wierd cross between bugs and reptiles.
The kroot mercenaries list may be in trouble, but kroot have made a big comeback in Tau empire, it seems, perhaps due to the sudden awesomeness of kroot hounds in the new rules..
