They became the Sons of Horus, after Horus decided that he needed to 'redefine the purpose' of the XVI Legion. It was after a series of failed negotiations with the human Interex. It was -suggested- that the name be changed after the Ullanor Campaign/Triumph/What have you.

Warmaster Horus was surprisingly peaceful considering his title, trying to negotiate rather than annihilate the Interex when it was discovered they harbored aliens, beleiving it was what the Emperor would've done. However, the negotiations were brought to an untimely end. What was the name and title of the Word Bearer who caused the negotiations to fail by stealing a weapon from an Interex Museum, causing Horus much despair and turmoil? (Hint: The title makes it fairly ironic that he would steal a xeno weapon)
