    Use of drugs in IG

    Straight to the point...

    1. What is an official Imperial policy/view about this?

    2. Which armies are using them (except Savlar Chem-Dogs) and where I can find more info about this?

This above all; to thine own self be true.

1: The Imperial policy seems to be one that is liberal about it. There have been many cases of experimentation with combat drugs and the such on many imperial guard regiments. Combat drugs are also in high use with Arco-Flagellants and Penitent Engines.

2: I don't know of any specific armies, but if you look in the Inquisitor Rulebook, the imperial guard veteran character is a gland warrior, implanted with all sorts combat drug glands to aid him in battle. You can download it at www.specialist-games.com

    1. It makes them fight better. Who cares if they go insane and sterile and die ten years later in a freak murder-suicide outbreak that leaves nine families dead?
    2. Inquisitorial retinues (stormtroopers in particular) are sometimes heavily doped up to increase their performance/lower their free will and ability to question. As mentioned, Arco-Flagellants are basically walking adrenaline packages with some whips tied to the extremities. Sisters of Battle would make frequent use of them, I'd imagine, especially anabolic steroids; they don't need to worry about potential gender issues if they go wrong, and they need the muscle. There are no significant regiments, but I'd imagine they would be in common use on a dispersed basis. The Savlar Chem-Dogs are notable only because for them drug use is the rule and not the exception.

Oh yes, penal legions. They'd have no problems with it.

Thanks for replays... I am about to start IG army and this detail attracted my attention. It seems that drugs are primarily being used by ‘‘criminal’’ troopers, which I find interesting since 40k universe can be a very scary place, and one would thought that use of drugs could be a little more wider.

Well, it isn't limited only to criminals and what not. Some Ordo Hereticus Inquisitors will employ a drug called 'Fend, which inhibits the effects of psychic powers on themselves. Others might use Spook, to increase their own powers. So don't limit yourself to just guardsmen and criminals.

Well.. considering that Imperial commanders have had entire units fitted with synthetic drug glands to improve their effectiveness, it doesn't seem too morally far off to hand out slaught injectors before every battle.

To be honest, I'm rather surprised about the lack of combat drugs. But then, I guess it's only the lack of rules for combat drugs. In fluff terms, there's nothing to say that trooper X can't be a kalma addict who needs to shoot up before every battle, but I don't think he needs different rules because of it. It's just background.

The other thing is that it degrades the Imperial Guard image of normal humans standing up against the odds through discipline and numbers.

Plus.. the lawsuits. All it takes is some kid to start using after playing warhammer and some shrieky parent could kick up a fuss about the depiction of drug use in the game. 40k is pretty adult, but there are still themes you have to be careful with, because a lot of people out there are too stupid to take responsibility for themselves, and will try to blame someone else.

By drugs you mean...? Physical performance drugs are pretty common, but it is highly illeagle to use drugs for recreational purposes. Anything that makes you feel good in 40K is a sin in Inquisitorial eyes.

I believe he means combat drugs..

There's quite a lot of detail out there about combat drugs in the 40k universe. I keep pointing people at this, but check out the Inquisitor rulebook. There's also kalma, which seems to be some kind of sedative or fear supressant.

Never specified it in either of the posts. If anything Marcus is hinting for the other type

note the use of quotations. And what do criminals in the current penal system try so desparately to get smuggled in?

The Inquisitor rulebook is great. It gets even better when you get the actual book, not the downloaded version. mmmm...fluuuuuufff!

There's at least 5 different combat drugs in the book, each describing the effects. Check it out sometime.
