K, so I know that they are space marine type guys n all that, but what I dont know is how they are selected. You have your grey knights who are selected kinda the same way as regular sm recruits (according to other specific customs) but I dont understand how that would work for the custodes. Besides, who rules them? Are they a chapter-sort of organization? Much appreciated.
You could say they are the only legion remaining. 10,000 strong and totally dedicated to the defence of the Imperial palace.
As for recruiting, I think it would be like the Grey Knights since those are about equal in training, arming and all that. I don't think the Custodes needs to be psykers though, but there's little info on them. They probably recruit from the hellish mega-hive that is Terra, but since I doubt that they see any action at all their recruitment level would be quite low since they don't need to compensate for losses.
Their master is the Grandmaster of the Custodes, who is also a High Lord and probably one of the only persons with access to the Emperor.
how many high lords are there anyways? there's 4 in the 40k rule book...
12 according to my sources, altough their numbers are different depending on history since not all posts are held all the time IIRC.
Camel is correct - twelve High Lords of Terra. It is possible some posts will not be filled at a specific time, the number is usually 12. If you have a Land Raider model have a look at the tracks (assuming you assembled it correctly). There should be 12 track links of the normal variety, followed by one with the shape of the aquila on it. This symbolises the 12 lords of Terra (normal track links) being led by the emperor (the aquilla link), and ensures that the mark of the emperor will be stamped upon any planet upon which the Land Raider serves.
thx for clearing that up.
here be an article on said custodes:
cool guys, thx.
Also, they are the only imperial organization that are completely immune to imperial law, The Inquisition, high lords, Adeptus Mechanicus, the adeptus terra, the administratum, and the munitorum all put together could not command them! They are at the command of the emperor (grand master) alone. Their only job is to protect the palace.
-The God of all Machines
Just to clear up the High Lords mess, there are always twelve, but they're not always held by the same offices. Generally several posts are permanently taken by a particular organisations:
The Master of the Administratum
The Inquisitorial Representative
The Ecclesiarch of the Adeptus Ministorum
The Fabricator General of the Adeptus Mechanicus
The Grand Provost Marshal of the Adeptus Arbites
The Paternoval Envoy of the Navigators
The Master of the Astronomican
The Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum
The Master of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica
but the others can change between various organisations depending on the power disposition of the Imperium at the time, but are generally from this list:
Lord Commander Militant of the Imperial Guard
The Lord Commander of the Segmentum Solar
The Representative of the Holy Synod of Terra
The Abbess Sanctorum of the Adepta Sororitas
The Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes
The Chancellor of the Estate Imperium
The Speaker for the Chartist Captains
It gives a different title for the Custodes, where did Grand Master come from?
If I am not mistaken, the Adeptus Custodes also are sent out in small detachments to ensure the Emporer's will is being enacted. For example, I think a small group was sent with the Space Wolves when they attacked Prospero. But this is somewhat contradictory, because I think it likely they would have stepped in when Russ was trying to kill Magnus. His orders were to capture him, but then again, how do you stop two Primarchs going at it?
