Okay.. Really, just think of a chapter, and think of some way in which a space marine could be flawed. I think it helps to remember that space marines aren't human, so all the Star Wars stuff, like love, is pretty out. But things like pride, ferocity, even a faith which is too strong and unyielding, all are things which might go too far and tip a space marine over the edge. If you want more specific ideas, how about some info about your army? Do they favour a specific god or are they undivided? What kind of a focus does your army have in terms of tactics and doctrine? Things like that would really help. On question 2, very few chapters escape unscathed. The Red Corsairs were reduced to about 3 companies when they fled the Imperium, and some traitor chapters (the damned company of lord Caustos for example) are even smaller. It's likely they'll literally have to fight their way to safety, and it's going to be a really tough battle.. probably with other space marine chapters called in to preserve the honour of the adeptus, and so forth. EDIT: Haha.. I just had an idea. The chapter venerates the myth of its founding chapter master, who bravely saccrificed himself against the forces of chaos. However, after digging around too much, the current chapter master/librarian/chaplain discovers a secret room in the fortress monastery, containing evidence of chaos worship.. It turns out that the ancestor they venerate and love didn't die at all, but instead switched sides and is now a chaos lord/daemon prince.. A schism arises within the chapter leadership, but the faction which remains loyal to their beloved hero kills the more loyalist leaders and leads the chapter into the eye of terror to search for him. The basic marines have no idea whats going on, only that librarian X and Chaplain Y suddenly disappeared, and now the chapter leadership seems a bit spookier and more secretive than before.. |

If they've been touched by Chaos early in their escape from the Imperium they could recieve some level of aid from an existing chaos legion or other traitor chapter. My Dusk Phantom Chapter recieved aid from the Word Bearers for instance.

This has happened before. For example, during the Badab uprising, the Atral Claws became enticed by chaos and openly rebelled against the Empire. So it is possible. If they were smart, and didn't openly rebel against the empire, they could probably escape to the eye of terror without being noticed for awhile.

Well, the number one reason for chapters to be wiped out (other than Tyranids) seems to be them developing a mutation the Inquisition doesn't like. In fact, one of the "reasons to go to war" with Space Marines in the back of the WH codex is that the chapter master suddenly develops awesome-like psyker abilities. Anyway, it'd probably be way out of the question for an entire chapter to go chaos. I mean, even the original traitor legions didn't go 100% chaos kookoo.

ticking off a inquisitor is also a good way to get erased from emperium history: like the Celestial Lions, they told an Inquisitor that he shouldn't bomb harmless civies, so the inquisition set up a devious scheme and had them all killed with sniper fire during an ork attack... after such an attack they might be really open to the whispers of chaos

some chaos marines will try to turn a chapter so they have fresh blood to add to their legion, so if they want this chapter for themselves the CSM are going to back the traitor-chapter up! the galaxy is very large, 10 thousand years and the DA still haven't found all the fallen... one question though... where did the fallen come from? you didn't talk about them in your first post, nor are they discussed in the other posts...
