I have recently come into a Tau force from a friend. I dont plan on buying much more than I have been given as I like the idea of using what I got and it suits the renegade Tau army nicely in my opinion. As I am one to use odd fluff here is the fluff for the Tau force.
The Twisting Winds
Commander Sky Runner hails from the littleknown sept world of Vol'ya. He rose through the ranks like anyother has before him. He was exceptionally adept at stealth and ambush tactics, always utilising Stealth teams to their maximum potential. Early in his career Sky Runner was gifted with a small force and sent to a distant and entirely unpopulated corner to the far south of T'au. On his journey Sky Runner's fleet was attacked by a imperial fleet. After a long and uneven battle the Tau force fled with heavy losses, among them a badly damaged command ship. In a emergency the fleet had to settle in a unknown system.
The Tau forces led a expedition on the most habitable planet in the system. They found it had no living forms of life besides plants and fungi. Here Sky Runner found evidence of a long dead species. He travelled around the planet searchin for a construct of some sort. His scouts found a giant temple over three miles high and 12 miles around that had been in place for so long it appeared as a mountain. Inside this temple they found a super-computer that explain the life and death of the native species.
Their name was the Cryptids, they were of reptillian descent and had over sized brains and about 31cm tall. They were psychic but in a different way, they didn't draw power from the warp they just extended their brain pulses out of their bodies allowing them to communicate to each other mentally and manipulate move objects with their minds.. The species sustained themselves on hydrogen which was in a abundancy on their homeworld. They thought themselves as a creation of the old ones.
The Cryptids lived a very nomadic life for many thousands of years, then in about the year 11,000 (by imperial time) they developed the first steps into a great society. They developed great technologies based on their mental abilities, including a machine to "freeze" their bodies and leave them in a rock like form allowing immortality at the price of a stone body. They learned that they breathe hydrogen and the natural amount of hydrogen on the planet was depleting at an incredible rate. To make matters worse the Cryptids learned that a large meteor was about to crash into the planet effectively destroying the rest of the hydrogen and through the planet off axis.
As their only known means for survival at the time they chose to "freeze" their bodies making it far more likely they would survive the loss of hydrogen and the impact of the meteor. They stored their bodies in a containment unit deep underground. On what was called the Zero Day the meteor crashed and moved the planet as expected and burned the remaining hydrogen as expected. What was unexpected was the metals in the meteor multiplied and mutated their mental abilities merging nearly all of their minds into one giant conscience. Of the few that remained free the could leave their bodies and walk the world as ghosts still able to move things still strengthening their powers.
They waited for other life to come and find them for many millenia and when the Tau came they hoped that they could help reverse the frozen bodies. Sadly the Tau were unable to do this but were able to make cloned Techno bodies for the few powerful free minds and a giant living computer for the Cryptid Mind. They thanked the Tau by helping them in war using their powers to get inside the enemies heads and picking up tanks and platoons of men.
The Tau have set up a new headquarters on the planet ad have inhabited the other planets with ease. The Cryptids new forms have brought alot of new threats to the system which they Tau have managed to fight off for thetime being. The Tau of the Twisting Winds have been declared renegades by the rest of the empire as they believe that the Twisting Winds worship the Cryptid Mind. This is untrue as they use it to help further their technology and get closer to be able to unfreeze the Cryptids.
ok if they can pick up platoons of men and tanks then thats a bit far fecht and cheap, they could win every war.
Chaos is a decison not a life
yes i understand they would be powerful. I never said anything about using them if anything i may make rules for a 500point one to use with my friends for big games but never anything else.
It sounds intriguing. I like it.
Turtles For the Turtle God!
Shells For the Shell Throne!
Just a couple of things you may want to consider for this fluff:
You may want to drop the bit about them breathing hydrogen, or pick a heavier gas, such as methane, since the gravity on the world would have to be significantly higher to hold an appreciable amount of hydrogen at the surface. They would be negotiating with Tau pancakes.
People are probably going to bug you about the fact that their psychic powers aren't derived from the warp. As far as I'm aware the only ones who have any abilities similar to that are the C'tan. Of course, their may be an implied deeper story there, Settlers of C'tan! And if the Tau have contacted the Cryptids, what role does the computer serve in the story? They can tell their own history.
This is interesting. I'd like to see you keep going with this.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains
i like the fluff here, are you going to base the Cryptids upon the Seer Council rules or is it a bit of fun? either way i like it
my original plan was for them to breathe methane and I can easily change it so it is methane. I didnt plan on them having any contact with anything they just evolved on their own and then died-kinda. Also with the fluff it is biased, like how a marine can save a planet. Their powers will probably just end up being like telekinesis and telepathy without PotW.
