MK1 Thunder Pattern
As the Emperor began his conquest of Terra, this was the mark of power armour available to both the techno-barbarians ruling Terra and the Emperor’s soldiers.
The Emperor’s symbol at the time, which was a thunderbolt, was where the name of the armour was derived from. The extreme bulk of this mark of power armour was due to the amount of cooling equipment to it overheating. The armour is not enclosed so the wearer is vulnerable to the vacuum of space and the atmosphere of otherworldly planets. But as the main fighting of the time was on Luna, Mars or Terra which all have breathable atmospheres it did not matter. Only the upper body of the wearer was enhanced through the power supplied from the backpack, as upper body strength was most useful because of the amount of close combat fighting. The weaponry of the time was limited in range or in numbers and this meant that close combat was more useful in battles.
MK2 Crusade Pattern (also referred to as Crusader Armour).
Crusade amour was built through the direction of the Emperor at the end of the Age of Strife with the Great Crusade in mind. As such the armour was fully enclosed to allow fighting in dangerous environments. All Space Marines were quickly equipped with this armour. This armour is officially classed as the first power armour that was fully enclosed. The addition of power leg armour was helpful in lowering wounds inflicted during battle. The addition of a helmet adds a neural connection to the Marine’s mind, which enables him to see and hear better and more efficiently than normal. The helmets also allows the Marines to see in the infra-red and ultra-violet spectrums.
MK3 Iron Pattern
As the young Imperium expanded it meet new enemies such as Squats who fought on massive spacecraft and homeworlds. This meant that the front of the armour was the main target as the cramped corridors of the ships. Iron armour was built with this in mind by enlarging the armour plating on the front of the suit. This meant that the back plate of the armour had to be lessened in weight and thickness to balance the heat produced so the armour wouldn’t overheat. The helmet of this mark was reshaped to a wedge shape as to repel bullets. The MK3 was not meant as a full replacement for the MK2 but as a stopgap to help in assaults of cramped environments.
MK4 Maximus Pattern
As the Great Crusade drew to an end, the original suits manufactured on Mars were wearing out. The new design included separate armour plates to large armour casings that had flexible joints. The design would allow easier manufacture and maintenance with only minor loss of flexibility of the wearer. The knowledge gained from other planets allowed the Tech-Priests of Mars to reduce the weight and add to the strength of the plates. The bigger armour made it viable to place the cables under the plates. The MK4 was meant to be the ultimate armour for Space Marines and many a factory was dedicated to its production.
MK5 Heresy Pattern
As the Horus Heresy broke out many chapters could not receive the supplies needed to make or repair MK4 armour. The MK5 armour was created out of the most basic materials and was easy to manufacture. The armour used lots of components from earlier armour as most chapters had stockpiles of the parts. His meant that it was also fairly easy to maintain and repair. The most recognisable of its features were the studded shoulder pads and the cables ribbing across the new chest plating. The power pack did not produce enough power for the armour and would overheat. So the wearer could either turn the power up and suffer unbearable heat or lower the packs power and have lower performance than normal. The new helmet design was taken from the Terminator armour development designs. As it is from the Terminator concepts it had the new Auto-senses. Vast numbers of these suits were made during the Heresy but many shipments were lost or capture only to be used by traitors.
MK6 Corvus Pattern (also called ‘Beakie’ or ‘Womble’ armour).
Corvus armour was being developed as soon as the MK5 armour had began production. The armour had been rushed into production as traitor forces enclosed on the Terran solar system. The armour had cables on the inside and outside of the chest plate. The one on the outside was designed to release excess heat and the one under the armour plating in case the first was shot or broken in battle. The studded shoulder pad on the left of the armour is the most distinguishable feature as it had a skin plate molecularly bonded to it to protect is when the Marine fired his weapon. After the Heresy had passed, the studded pad of the MK6 armour was normally associated with the Siege of Terra. The beak shaped helmet is based on the emerging Terminator helmet designs and contains the new upgrades of the time. Early sets of this armour had single shin leg armour but later suits had improved leg armour with kneepads.
MK7 Aquila Pattern (also known as Imperator or Eagle armour).
This mark is the most current and used armour of the Space Marines but many chapters still use the MK6 Corvus armour exclusively. The armour has been nicknamed Eagle armour as the chest plate displayed the Emperor’s Aquila. The armour received a new power pack design. The helmet design is based on the earlier MK5 helmet although it is easily exchangeable with the MK6 helmet. All cabling was placed under the chest plate and the parts of the MK6 and MK7 are commonly found interchanged with one another.
MK8 Errant Pattern
This is a highly modified Aquila pattern that has had a collar added to it and a new helmet is produced to work exclusively with the mark of armour. Errant armour is rare on the battlefield and is used by champions and leaders of squads mainly.
Leaders of Space Marine chapters along with Inquisitors, and other important people have been known to receive a special version of power armour. Artificer armour is made from the highest-grade materials available with the greatest care and skill. It gives protection nearly equal to that of Terminator armour. As such the armour is lighter and the wearer is able to move more freely and faster.

very nice thread guys. nice descriptions to go along with the pics too, but the pics could be a little bigger for my taste.
Plagiarism bad, research good! You do research, ergo good. I wish the pics were a bit bigger too, but it must have been a nightmare to find them at all. I think it would be very nice if your pics could be added to the Wiki entry, but I have no idea how to do that.

Aye, I'm loving not having to go to wikipedia anymore for the information on the armours anymore.
On the plagiarism note, both major sources of where the information could have originated have been given so nothing can be said against it. (I do like the alterations made to some of the armour descriptions; though I'd have loved there to be more to Aquila and Errant armour if there was more that could be added. Sadly there is not.)
Rep to you Pickle, this is a great thread.
