I reallyl ike the concept and fluff behind the eldar rangers. My one beef is that across the entire universe, every single eldar ranger is a sniper. I wanted to convert some rangers with shurikien catapaults and maybe even some close combat weapons for a nice kill team with some fun backstory. Has anyone heard of any instances is stories where rangers use other weapons? Are there any glaring arguments to giving them something besides a long rifle?
Space Marines are the gateway drug
If everyone makes fun of West Virginia, who does West Virginia make fun of?
Yeah they'd use plenty of other weapons. Well other non-aspect warrior weapons.
Just look at the old ranger models where many of them had swords. Don't forget they all have pistols too.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
I'd imagine they prefer sniper rifles, but they would obviously be armed with something they can fire at close range, like a shuriken pistol or some sort of Eldar digi-laser, or even conceivably carry a sword or a combat knife of some kind. The reason why they aren't armed with shuriken catapults in-game is because...well, they'd be like Guardians with camoline(sp) cloaks. The guns are what makes them Rangers.

Not much to say here really, I second what ze_poodle said and think that this will make a interesting and original kill team.

Yeah well they are outcasts so they arm themself with whatever they feel nescessary. Everyone carrying sniper rifles might be a thing special for when entire squads of them go to battle.
A sniper rifle can be quite handy though since it allows them to sat out of sight at long range and take out targets that might pose a threat to them.
Well, the rules quote them as having 'Ranger Long Rifle and Shruiken Pistol'.
I'm sure anyone in a friendly game wouldn't mind you swapping the Long rifle for a Shruiken Catapult or close combat weapon. Sure, they may not be quite as effective points-wise, but the fact you are taking them with different weapons justifies the cost.
If your opponent doesn't like it, well you can always count them as Storm/Vanilla Guardians and break a few mutable laws.
I, however, have yet to find a player who takes Kill team that seriously. It is, after all, meant to be taken with a pinch of salt, as the rules manual basically says.

Fantasy- Army Of Sigmar (A force led by Warrior Priests and an elderly woman named Agatha... Don't ask.)
I love the idea, i have the Eldar Ranger Inquisitor model, great model.
Fluff wise, the thing about Rangers is that they're often away from Craftworlds for hugely long periods, this would probably mean they'd have to improvise a lot of the time, odds are they might pick up a weapon from wherever they happen to be. So of course it'd definitely be possible for them to have a non-sniper weapon, maybe even a non-Eldar weapon.
It's kill team, which is pretty lax in terms of hard-set rules, so I say go for it, give your ranger whatever you want, you could just say they've been stalking around an Imperial Hive for years and ran out of sniper rounds, so they had to pick up, lasguns, shotguns, hellguns, bolters, etc...
If you do the conversion i'd love to see it, good luck!

A ranger holding a brightlance would be cool.
Or maybe something smaller , like a long range laser lance. That would be cool.
Sneaking up before the battle begins to get a good spot, and then blast tanks.
