okay, here goes:
Does the Tau ever have facial hair?
the reason why i had brought this up is because, i'm going to sculpt a small beard around the mouth area of my ejected Commander, to give the impression of him being in battle for a long time as he is in his middle ages, and making him look rather ruffian-like to distinguish him having great experience upon the subject of war.
is this practicable to the Tau fluff? i've seen the ethereals have long beards on their chins but, do they ever have a full blown beard?
I don't remember ever reading anything about whether or not the Tau have facial hair. They're certainly not hairless, since they've got those ponytails.
Up to you. Just because the helmetless Tau models we've seen so far are clean shaven wouldn't make putting a beard on your commander "wrong". Sounds like a cool idea.
You know.. it's really not ever mentioned, I don't think..
I'd refrain from giving them full, human style beards simply because it would make them look too human. But as noted, some Ethereal models do seem to have facial knots..
And I think most Tau commanders are middle aged at least..
Childhood and training
then 4 years minimum as a Shas'la
4 years minimum as a Shas'ui
4 years minimum as a Shas've
That's 12 years of military service minimum to get to shas'el rank. 16 to get to Shas'o rank, and that assumes they never fail one of the fire tests to advance in rank.
Go ahead I think It'll look cool. And if anyone argues claim its a hair squig he picked up as a trophy.
Veni Vidi Variant
I came, I saw, I got a different type of Leman Russ.

Go for it. In fact I've seen conversions in the net that used beastmen and ungor heads to depict shas'ui's with facial hair. Here is an example:
