My local gaming club is starting a campaign, and they fellow who is designing it wants us all to give him a summary of our armies background, which we should be ready to elaborate on later. Also, he said it would make things more interesting if we had secrets about the army (like the dark angels but actually secret), and if we could tell that directly to him. Now, in order to make for a more interesting story, I have loose threads in this story (like iyanden's involvements) and explanations (the mentioning of grey knights and tanith, I use them occasionally in my army). So I'd like it if you all would review my story and say what you think, and if you have any fluff corrections. While I know more about 40k fluff than most at my gaming club, I still know comparatively little, just the basics.
The Valneeran guard originates from the nocturnal planet of Valneera. Coming from this shadowy, swampy planet has led its native people to specialize in stealth and guerilla tactics. The defining characteristic of these people though is their white hair and red eyes, giving them an unsettling aura about them. The time of the founding of the Regiments of Valneera is lost to imperial records, but it is known that they started with only two regiments, and to date now have 27. Though a shadowy army, almost half of the regiments are surprisingly Armored Battalions, with even the old Imperial Malcador tank being present, though most of these battalions are comprised of the venerable Leman Russ. The equipment of the Valneeran guardsmen is standard of the Imperium, with flak armor and Mars pattern Lasgun, with one notible exception. Chemicals from a plant native to Valneera are added to the armor upon being recieved by the soldier. This chemical is unknown to those outside of Valneeran birth, but it is known to produce a cameoline-like effect on the armor, allowing the soldier to slip in and out of the shadows unseen. The standard weapon distribution for a squad is a Plasmagun and heavy bolter, with heavy weapons besides this being almost exclusively allocated to heavy weapons squads.
Due to their stealth skills (being paired with the Tanith First and Only once because of this), regiments of Valneeran guard are often allocated for periods of time to other planets, due to crisis or lack of manpower. While regiments 11, 15, 19, 26, 9, 13, and 8 were stationed on Circe, a planet that a century prior had undergone nuclear cleansing by the Ordo Malleus, the planet was attacked by an Iyanden strikeforce, and was summarily fended off by the Dark Angels and guard stationed there (including the Valneeran Guard). What is odd though is that not a Imperium standard week later the planet was "attacked" by a force of none other then Dark Angel Fallen. Following closely behind was the Inquisitor Zephanartes, apparently chasing the small contingent of Fallen across the Galaxy. When the Fallen made landfall after suffering damage to their spacecraft, Inquisitor Zephanartes enlisted the nearby stationed Valneeran guard to help him bring them in. When they got to the crashsite, the Dark Angels were already there, collecting any of the Fallen still alive, with others in worse condition being executed on the spot. When Zephanartes tried to take some of the Fallen in for questioning for his own purposes the Dark Angels resisted, and in the fire fight that followed the Dark Angels there were killed, and the entire 9 and 13 regiments of the Valneeran guard were wiped out (their numbers were later adopted by new regiments, keeping the Valneeran regiment total).
Alot of what happened after this point is unknown, but the Valneeran guard is still rightly despised by the Dark Angel Chapter and even many of its succesors. Also, news of this eventually made its way to the High Lords of Terra, and inquisitor Zephanartes has come under the scrutinization of many an inquisitor, especially his peers in the Ordo Hereticus. Also, two things happened immediately after the battle of Circe. One, Zephanartes claimed a wrecked Dark Angel Land Raider as his own personal transport, stripping it of its original machine spirit and erasing its chapter Heraldry. On any occasion when the Dark Angels chapter meets with Zephanartes, feuds break out. Second, after their valiant service under him, in a rare occurence, the Valneeran guard and all of its regiments were indoctrined to Zephanartes, and their Generals obey the heed of the Empereor first, and Zephanartes second.
The Valneeran guard has recently returned from a campaign against the World Eaters chaos cult. The Twisted Marine Legion had been attempting to take a planet, Henkor, in Valneera's neighboring system. During this campaign a part of the Grey Knights chapter fought alongside them, thanks to Zephanartes pulling of strings in Ordo Malleus connections. Though he has been seen since the campaign, Zephanartes has apparently disappeared back into the shadows of the Inquisition's work as of late.
The secret of the army is that after the Dark angel Feud Zephanartes has been harboring Cypher (though only for a brief period of time considering him). Wether this is by accident of Zephanartes' schemings will be elaborated on later,
Let it be noted, that while this seems like the typical overdone, overpowered army fluff, it isn't ( i think).
1. Sure, saying they defeated the Dark Angles is crazy, but they only defeated a small part, not even hitting the 150 marine range.
2. An inquisitor keeping a fight with the Dark Angels from boiling over and attracting the BIG attention from the High Lords of Terra is feasible since the Dark Angels don't want to bring up the reason for the feud.
3. They only fought beside the Tanith, its not like Gaunt and Zephanartes sat down and played a game of chess.
