“Contact! Right flank, 227 metres! Moving to engage!”
The words rang out over the short range communication system. Lieutenant Isaacs quickly turned to his right, trying to spot the armored Chimera transport in the distance. He could see the outline of the vehicle as it sped towards the rocky crags to the east, obscured by the great plume of dust it kicked up as it tore through the ash waste. It seemed his ambush had worked, and they had caught the renegade marines out in the open. His men crouched down in readiness, eagerly awaiting their orders.
“Hesitation, Lieutenant?” Isaacs nearly jumped as he heard the deep, gravelly voice of Commissar Marson from behind him. “Merely weighing my options,” he nodded to himself assuredly, then began giving orders over his comm-radio. “Sergeant Martins, take your squad into the rocks and hold the flank. Do not let them through without a fight. Force them to break cover and catch them in the crossfire. May The Emperor Protect!”
Turning to his left, he joined the rest of his men in the hastily fortified crater. Heavy bolters lined the edge of the deep walls, his men sighting each piece of cover as if they expected the enemy to appear at any moment.
Suddenly, it began. Off in the distance, the rapid fire booming of the Chimera’s guns could be heard, followed shortly by the sound of its engine revving as it sped forward towards the line of engagement. “Sir! Hostile sighted, shall we engage?” one of his men questioned. Without looking back at his men, he nodded once again and gave the order to fire.
The sound of the heavy bolters firing so close was deafening. Off in the distance he could spot several heavily armored shapes advancing, seemingly walking through the incoming fire as if oblivious to the large shells flying towards them. Even as the approaching marines began to fall under the heavy barrage, they returned fire as they advanced, short bursts of bolter fire being directed at the entrenched guardsmen as they weaved in and out of cover. Lieutenant Issacs reached for his mag-noculars, but the steady hand of Commissar Marson grabbed his arm before he could loose them from his belt. “There is no need to look, Lieutenant. We knew the renegades were here, we should count ourselves fortunate that they chose to find us rather than making us spend weeks looking for them. Remember your duty, and focus on keeping your men firing.”
There were many days that Isaacs wished he could be rid of his attending Commissar, but today he was thankful for his presence. He looked out at the field again, drew his chainsword and ordered his troops to continue firing on the advancing traitors.
“Sir!” Sergeant Martins voice came over the comm-radio ”’we’ve made contact on the flank, looks like we’ve found our renegades. We’re engaging in the crag, the transport is headed back to provide cover.” Lieutenant Isaacs glanced quickly to the right as the heavily armed shock troopers ran down the ramp of their transport, pulses of bloody red lasgun fire punctuated by the bright white balls of plasma as they stormed into the rocky ground. He could clearly see the damage his men were inflicting on the renegades, as many of them dropped under the sudden onslaught. As he turned his attention back to the front, he began to see the bulky forms of power armoured renegades taking up positions in the blasted craters near his position, and he knew at once he had underestimated the vile traitors. “Shift fire, focus on the rocks!” he bellowed, and his men swivelled their weapons to aim at the new threat.
Off in the distance, he could hear the air scream as the distinctive sound of a melta gun firing drowned out the heavy booming of bolter fire. The Chimera had taken a direct hit, but managed to speed off before too much damage was inflicted. He quickly looked east again, and could see one lone power armored figure among his men, short bursts of muzzle flash illuminating the hulking figure, chainsword in hand, as he mauled his way through Sergeant Martins squad.
As if out of nowhere, a tremendous roar reverberated behind the enemy position as a Rhino transport broke through the cover to his left, speeding headlong towards their position. Acting on instinct, he tapped two troopers on the back and pointed at the incoming threat. The men both turned and brought their plasma guns to bear, firing several shots at the oncoming transport, the impact shattering several of the tanks treads, forcing it to grind to a sudden halt. Behind the transport, he could see the remaining renegades breaking cover and using the stalled tank as cover as they advanced toward their position.
With a resounding crash, the side door of the Rhino burst open and its occupants began pouring out. Without any hesitation, the renegades advanced headlong into the oncoming heavy bolter fire, answering with focused bursts of their own archaic bolters. Within seconds, the men manning the heavy bolters on his left were dead, the renegades continuing to advance on the beleaguered Lieutenant Isaacs. Several bolt shells impacted the front of the crater near his remaining men as they prepared for the immanent charge, two finding home and killing the brave troopers that had stalled their attackers by crippling their Rhino.
Pulling his sidearm from it’s holster, Lieutenant Issacs readied himself for the inevitable charge, and with a quick prayer to the Emperor on his lips he led his men over the edge of the crater. Firing as he advanced, he saw the overwhelming odds he faced, and doubt crossed his mind. Looking to his left, he spotted the black garbed Commissar Marson firing methodically as he strolled calmly towards the advancing renegades. With almost inhuman accuracy, he saw the Commissar picking weak spots in the traitors armour, dropping first one, then another of the hulking attackers with his laspistol. As they approached, a trio of the power armored marines focused their fire on the Chimera as it advanced, guns still ablaze. Two of them were cut down by the tanks guns, but the remaining marine aimed his melta gun and tore the air apart again. The weapon struck the Chimera low, blasting several links of track apart and forcing it to a dead stop. Almost as one, the oncoming marines dropped their bolters and drew their chainswords, the sound of whirring teeth sending a chill up the spine of the Lieutenant.
The charge of the renegade marines was even more brutal than Isaacs could have imagined. Within seconds, his attendant staff was dead, butchered alive more than killed. The Commissar on his left had drawn his power sword, and was slowly being overwhelmed by the banner carrying leader of the marines. The crackling green blade of the enemy whirled and bit deep into Marsons shoulder, and with a twist severed his arm and sent his sword flying. A casual half rotation and flick of the wrist sent the Commissars head rolling in the ash, the eyes of the chaos champions helmet now focused solely on Lieutenant Isaacs.
As he brought his chainsword up to parry the first downward stroke, a blinding pain filled his body. He was so focused on the killing stroke of that glowing green sword that he failed to take into account the bolt pistol his opponent was armed with. As he crumpled to the ground in pain, he hoped only that someone from Sergeant Martins squad had managed to escape to report of their failure. The marine sheathed his sword, and stepped towards the fallen Lieutenant, kicking him onto his back and placing one foot on his chest, crushing his ribs as if he was a no more than an insect. For an agonizing minute he lay there breathing, jagged spasms of pain ripping through his body, staring into the barrel of the renegades pistol, praying for release. As the life slipped from him, he wished only that it would end faster, that the traitorous marine would mercifully end his suffering.
Off in the distance, Sergeant Martins watched the renegade leader crush the life out of Lieutenant Isaacs. His squad lay dead around him, only by some great blessing had he managed to kill that thrice cursed traitor that had charged ferociously into his men. The remaining renegades turned their attention to the Chimera still smoldering nearby. The crew of the transport had managed to break free, and one by one the marines took aim and fired, picking them off as if hunting for sport. The air hissed and then exploded as the melta gun tore through the tank again, blasting the remains of the Chimera into the air. Under cover of smoke, flame, and the deafening roar of the burning Chimera, Sergeant Martins fled into the night, intent on making his report.

Chaos – Although staying completely hidden until turn 3, CA ended up roaring onto the field in turn 4, wiping out the IG fire support squad before crashing into the command squad in turn 5, taking them out in the top of turn 6 and still going on to cripple the resilient chimera
Overall, I was quite happy with the way my marines worked out. Was a little timid with my rhino riding assault squad, but the amount of fire my footsloggers weathered was impressive.
As I said in my rep, I prefer having both. Nice job=)
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
Taking time to do both is really nice, it's like writing in two languages, one for those who like the fluff and one for those who want to understand the process.

Keep them coming in the future!
Awesome report! Good job butchering those poor guardsmen with the REAL warriors of the 41st Millenium.

Well done, it's not easy to pull off two versions of a battle report. Not only that, the technical report is easy to read and informative.
Excellent piece of writing, and pretty cool how your sergeant was able to out fight a marine. Keep them coming!
great fluff report. i enjoyed it throughly.
Well, glad people enjoyed the fluff, looks like I'm on the hook for more. I'll more than likely write from my armies perspective, but it's hard to pass up the opportunity to write from an Imperial Guard point of view sometimes.
Rather enjoyed this game, that damned grenadier sergeant just would not die, little bugger managed to hold on round after round despite my lone marine chewing through his squad... really wanted to wipe the board
Provided I can get finished painting a couple tanks, should be playing a couple games next weekend. Time permitting, I'll see if I can take notes and do a few more reports.
