This was a short battle against my tyranid friend Sean. He says that it is impossible to make a small list using tyranids, so he outnumbered me. It was difficult to even make him leave his zoanthrope behind. He also had a Lictor that was due to come at turn 6, but he had forgotten about it when the time came.
Mission: This was a last stand where the force organisation chart was scrapped. Basically it was to see how long the Eldar would last against the Nids.
- Hive Tyrant, venom cannon, scything talons, extended carapace, adrenal glands, toxin sacs, enhanced senses.
- Broodlord with 5x Genestealers
- 10x Hormagaunts
- 12x Genestealers
- Carnifex, tusked, bio-plasma, toxin sacs, 2x scything talons, adrenal glands (WS), extended carapace, spine banks, mace tail.
- Eldrad Ulthran, witchblade, staff of ulthamar, shurikan pistol, ghosthelm, runes of warding, runes of witnessing, doom, guide, mindwar, fortune, eldritch storm.
- 10x Dire Avengers, Exarch, Diresword and shuriken pistol.
- Warlock, singing spear (The warlock was allowed to become an independent character for this game).
Terrain/Deployment: We deployed our forces on either 3' side of a 5' X 3' table within 8" of the edge. Between us (slightly closer to the Nid's lines) was one piece of (size two?) difficult terrain with a crater on it that only monstrous creatures could see over. 6" to the right of it was a small bunch of rocks and boulders. Behind the rocks was another terrain piece identical to the one in the centre of the board. Half of a walled fort stood 5" to the left of the centre terrain and had some plants in front of it. (*NOTE: all viewpoints are from the side.)
The Tyranid Carnifex was placed behind the Fort, The Hive Tyrant behind the centre piece of terrain, the Hormagaunts and Broodlord + Genestealers were in front of it, and the other squad of Genestealers were on the opposite corner, behind the rocks and second size two terrain.
Eldrad Ulthran gazed out at the land in front of him. He knew every inch of this land; every blade of grass, every crack in the stonework of the abandoned fort set into the cliffside. The vision had been very detailed in it's description of this location and what was to occur in it today. This gap in the cliffs was the only hole in the defences of the exodite world, and all that was available to block it with was a single unit of Dire Avengers belonging to the Army of Shiz –a Mercenary army famous for lending it’s support to Eldar worlds under attack -, himself and his Warlock companion Elerien Arghenzir. Elerien was an oddity as he refused to use his abilities against Tyranids, saying that his rage and his spear were all the weapons he needed to fight the Great Devourer. They had claimed his home world and he would not allow his powers to aid him in having his vengeance. The circumstances in which Eldrad found himself reminded him of an Eldar legend where a single unit of Dire avengers was able to hold back a nightmarish tide of Daemons long enough for their comrades to escape to safety. He hoped that his force would perform as well against Tyranids.
Any further contemplation was cut short by the sound of chitinous bodies scuttling over rocks and great monstrosities of recycled bio-matter forcing their way through any obstacle that stood in their path. The attack had begun.
Turn 1 – Tyranids: Sean’s Horamgaunts ran around the left side of the centre mound, ready to move and charge next turn. The Broodlord & retinue moved into the cover of the crater on the centre mound. The Carnifex lumbered after the Hormagaunts, the Hive Tyrant close behind. The other Genestealers moved ahead into their own cover as well. No units were within charge range and at this point my opponent didn’t know that his Tyrant could see over size 2 terrain.
Turn 1 – Eldar: After running forward to get into range Eldrad, identifying the more immediate threat, passed his staff in front of him in the direction of the Hormagaunts, filling their simple minds with images of their deaths at the hands of the Dire avengers ahead of them. Not thinking creatures, the Gaunts were not daunted, but the multiple sources of sensory input left them momentarily distracted, ample enough opportunity for the Eldar. Eldrad raised his hand to the distant Gaunts; his eyes ablaze with psychic energy, and the Dire Avengers around him opened fire. The air around the Gaunts suddenly filled with eldritch lightnings, the storm wreaked havoc among the taloned insectoids, and what few Tyranids that survived the first and second eldritch storms were quickly finished off by the deadly accurate fire of the Dire Avengers.
Turn 2 – Tyranids: The Tyranid swarm again moved forward. Both groups of Genestealers moved out of their cover and into the open. Both the Monstrous creatures moved into the gap that had just been vacated by the Hormagaunts. Sean learned then that his Tyrant can see over the centre terrain, and killed one Dire Avenger with his Venom Cannon. No one could charge as the Broodlord was just millimetres out of assault range.
Turn 2 – Eldar: The Dire Avengers moved back towards the back-right corner of the board to maintain a good distance between them and the two groups of Genestealers. Eldrad cast doom on Broodlord & Co. followed by another two eldritch storm which this time only killed a couple of Genestealers. The Dire avengers then fired and killed every Genestealer, including the Broodlord.
Turn 3 – Tyranids: Everyone advanced again, both the Carnifex and the other Genestealers were left only millimetres out of range, the latter due to a poor fleet roll. The Hive Tyrant fired again and this time killed two Dire Avengers.
Turn 3 – Eldar: The squad moved close to the remaining Genestealer squad to stay out of the Carnifex’s 18” assault range. Eldrad cast doom, and the Dire Avengers annihilated the Genestealers with a single volley.
Turn 4-8 – Tyranids, Eldar: Eldrad watched the two remaining aberrations lurch forward, the Carnifex raised it’s tusked head and bellowed a challenge and stray wisps of green energy escaped from it’s mouth as it roared. Eldrad ignored it and instead locked eyes with the distant The Hive Tyrant. It’s many glittering eyes focussed on him and the long organic tube that replaced monstrosities lower arms discharged glowing bolts of acid at him and his men. The runes on his staff glowed and Eldrad made a sweeping motion with it across himself. A single bolt of acid about to collide with Eldrad changed course and flew skyward; Eldrad could defend himself but not the entire squad, that was a Warlock’s domain. He turned and saw Elerien standing stock still with his spear held before him and the rune armour on his robes glowing as a bolt of acid veered away from him. The Dire Avenger beside him was not so lucky and the last acid bolt struck him square in the chest and hurled him to the ground screaming as his head and body were quickly eaten away by the Tyranid Bio-Acid. Eldrad locked eyes with his Warlock companion and sent his voice thundering into Elerien’s mind, “You could have saved him if not for your foolish pride!”
The answering glare he received spoke volumes of the revenge Elerien planned to wreak on the Tyranids, but Eldrad could also read the shame there as well.
“You’ll have your vengeance” Eldrad promised, and announced the attack to the rest of his host. The Eldar charged forward emptying their weapons as they ran. Eldrad aided their attacks by showing the Carnifex it’s death, but still the crystal shurikans sparked and shattered on the Behemoth’s chitinous carapace, only a few penetrated the Carnifex’s natural armour and of those only a couple dealt any serious damage. Eldrad focussed his eldritch powers on the Carnifex’s tiny mind and felt another consciousness besides his own in his mind. A Daemon had bypassed the protections of Eldrad’s Ghosthelm and now attacked his mind directly sending Eldrad to his knees. Eldrad fought of the Daemon and sent it back to the warp, but he was still injured and the battle with the Daemon had shattered his concentration on the Carnifex. He tried again, drawing power from his staff, and sending it to overwhelm the mind of the Carnifex in much the same way that the Daemon had just tried to kill him, but in his weakened state he failed his psychic attack. And then the monster was upon them.
The many-bladed behemoth roared as it crashed into the Eldar ranks like a taloned avalanche, but the Eldar were faster. Exarch Keldraqhar charged the monstrous abberation before it had a chance to attack and attacked it with his Diresword, the speed of the Eldar was phenomenal, greater than even that of Eldrad himself, but Keldraqhar was still unable to land a wounding hit on the Tyranid. Eldrad struck at the monster with his staff but was likewise inhibited; the rest of the Dire Avengers then Elerien attacked the lumbering beast but were no more effective than their leaders had been. The Carnifex, having weathered the weak attacks of the Eldar, carved through them with his tusks, talons and tail. Eldrad moved out of the path of all attacks directed against him and most of the others had no problem evading the slow attacks, but not all. One of the Carnifex’s talons tore through one of the Dire Avenger’s armour, eviscerating him; another perished in a blast of green energy from the Carnifex’s tusked maw.
The Eldar renewed their attacks to no effect; no one could wound the creature. A piercing scream announced that the Hive tyrant had entered the fray. Eldrad spun to find it directly behind him and prepared to attack, but was surprised by Keldraqhar, the Dire Avenger, diving in front of the Hive tyrant Rolling under it’s talons and driving his Diresword into the armoured midsection of the Hive Tyrant. The Hive Tyrant screamed and the spirit stone se into the hilt of The Exarch’s sword glowed briefly, then faded again, leaving the monster wounded, but otherwise no worse for the wear. The Hive Tyrant snarled and knocked Keldraqhar back with its Venom Cannon. Eldrad attacked the creature, but was likewise knocked back by a talon. The Hive Tyrant then tore apart the remaining Dire Avengers, leaving just Keldraqhar, Elerien and Eldrad to fend off the remaining Tyranids. Eldrad shifted his focus back to the Carnifex and attacked with renewed ferocity shearing through one of it’s talons with his staff and continuing on to strike the creature in it’s midsection shocking it with the energies of the ancient weapon. The carnifex raised its head and roared in pain, and Eldrad carved off its head with his blade. Whenever he could Eldrad enhanced the defensive capabilities of the remainders of his host; that seemed to be the only thing keeping the three of them alive, as the Hive tyrant was an unparalleled killing machine. A massive talon ripped Keldraqhar apart and Eldrad wounded the Hive Tyrant again with a quick strike from his staff. A lot of time passed like this, with neither side gaining the upper hand before the same Daemon again attacked Eldrad’s mind and succeeded in injuring him a second time. The distraction provided by the Daemon’s attack was all the opportunity the Hive Tyrant needed and a monstrous talon swept through Eldrad’s body. Elerien watched Eldrad’s body disappear in a flash of eldritch light, but he did not allow himself a moment to wonder what had happened to him and charged at the Hive Tyrant stabbing at it with his singing spear. The Hive Tyrant felt the point of the crackling spear glance of its armour plates and hissed at the tiny robed figure. Simultaneously it swept one talon horizontally across at the Warlocks head level, while his second talon came underneath to impale him. Elerien ducked under the first talon, but had no chance to avoid the second. He felt it pierce his chest and slide a full three feet out of his back; his last thought was that he hoped that someone would retrieve his spirit stone from this place, and then his eyes closed and his body slumped onto the talon driven through it.
Result: Tyranid Victory
The Hive Tyrant was left with a single wound left, so I consider this a victory beacuse my Eldar more than paid for themselves and nearly killed all of the Tyranids before being killed. I'm sorry the report was so long (it took more time time to write this than the battle did), but I enjoyed writing it and hope it wasn't that difficult to read.

Congrats on doing so well.
I don't mean to knock your victory, but that is why special characters have a points level limit.
Does Eldrad have one? I don't know and don't mean to be ignorant of it.

Nice report - very good writing style and it was easy to read - although for a battle report maybe a little more description rather than narrative could have been added - but only in addition to what you have - the narrative side is quite good.
Quite a kill count your eldar racked up too! Nice work for what I think off the top of my head is only about 400pts worth - especially up against a Carni, Tyrant, Broodlord and the rest! Kudos (and rep) to you for that!
