This was the Tau player's first game, actually his first day with models. We decided to put together a battle to introduce him to the rules. The guard player and I were familiar with 4th edition rules, and the eldar player hadn't played a game since third edition. We used fourth edition rules.
Army Lists, 500 points per player, force organization charts were ignored in relation to having a necessary HQ:
Dark Eldar: 2x Raider Squads, Sniper Squad, Haemonculi
Tau: 2x Battlesuits, one with fusion guns and one with missile pods, 2x Fire warrior squads, one with carbines.
Imperial Guard: Basilisk, 2x Stormtrooper squads, 2x Drop trooper squads (Grenadiers?), Normal foot squad w/Drop Troopers
Eldar: Rangers, Wraithlord (Starcannon/Scatter laser), vyper (scatter laser/shurikan cannon), fire dragons, guardians.
Board was 4X5. From where I was facing, we had three pieces of terrain in my team's deployment zone. They were to the left, right, and center. Just beyond the left and right pieces were forests. In the center on the opposite side was a piece of debris. To the right was a building. On the left was a tiny bit of the forest.
Deployment: Basilisk was in the center of their deployment zone, with the squad of fire dragons in front of it. On the right were the rangers in the building, and the guardians at the edge of the woods in front of them. To the right of the guardians was the vyper. On the other side were the wraithlord and a single squad of stormtroopers.
We had in the center both crisis suits, and the squad of fire warriors with carbines. To the right was my sniper squad, along with one of my raiders. On the left we had the other fire warrior squad, and the raider with my haemonculi.
They had first turn.
Turn 1: Opposition:
The wraithlord moves into the forest, and the guardians do the same on the other side. The vyper steers wide of the forest, aiming at the raider.
The basilisk lobs a shell, and kills eight of my sniper squad, which is then pinned. The rangers open up on the center fire warrior squad, kill one and pin them. The guardians fail to see the infiltrated kroot in the same forest. The vyper opens fire and immobilizes and destroys the dark lance on the raider.
Turn 1: Us:
We move both crisis suits out of cover. My left hand raider moves up and disembarks, moving into the forest and fleeting into charge range of the wraithlord, as does the dismounted right hand squad. The kroot also move forwards.
Our shooting open up with a pair of missiles into the basilisk, which do nothing. The other crisis suit shoots at the wraithlord, and wounds it. The unpinned fire warriors are 2" out of range of the fire dragons. My raider shoots the dark lance and kills a singe fire dragon. My dismounted raider squad on the right opens up on the vyper, and kills it.
In our assault phase, the kroot hit the guardians, cause five casualties, and take five in return. Not quite according to plan. One the other side of the board, both crisis suits jump back. My warrior squad steamrolls the wraithlord, killing it and taking no casualties in return, and massacre into the stormtroopers.
Turn 2: Opposition:
Nothing moves. On the deepstrike side, both stormtrooper squads aim for the center. One lands smack on, the other scatters 11" into rapid fire range of my warrior squad on the right.
The basilisk shoots at the left handed fire warrior squad, and kills seven. They break and run off the board. The stormtroopers on my right kill five of my warrior squad, and they hold. The stormtroopers in the center bring that fire warrior squad down to four, which is then brought to three and pinned by the snipers.
The kroot kill the guardians in assault and consolidate back towards the stormtroopers. My warrior squad kills the guard squad on the left and consolidates towards the center.
Turn 2: Us:
My raider shifts up to get a shot at the basilisk. The crisis suit with fusion guns does the same. The other suit jinks away from the stormtroopers occupying the center. My warrior squad on the right moves to stand about an inch away from the first squad on stormtroopers.
The dark lance and the fusion gun manage to stun and blow the earthshaker off the basilisk. The crisis suit manages to kill a pair of the center stormtrooper squad. My warrior squad in the center fleets towards the fire dragons. The ones in the face of the stormtroopers kill one with a splinter cannon. The now unpinned pair of dark lances also kill one.
I charge the dragons and massacre them, rolling right into sight of the rangers, taking no casualties. My other warrior squad assaults and causes three casualties with no taken in return. The stormtroopers hold. The kroot pile in and are destroyed.
Turn 3: Them
The stormtroopers in the center move in to support their friends against my depleted warrior squad. The final guard squad deepstrikes within melta range of the crisis suit with the missile pods. Nothing else moves.
The rangers put one wound on the crisis suit with the fusion guns. The meltas both hit and fail to wound the crisis suit.
In assault, I kill three more stormtroopers in the south, but get the squad killed in return. They move back into the woods.
Turn 3: Us:
The crisis suit moves back from the meltaguns, while the fire warriors with the carbines move forwards. The raider and the fusion suit both move in to take shots at the side armor of the basilisk. My remailing warrior squad moves in to kill the rangers.
We kill the basilisk. The destructor of the haemonculi kills two rangers, with the splinter cannon killing a third. Dark lances kill another stormtrooper. On the other side of the board, missile pods and carbines kill five enemy soldiers from the melta squad, and tehy are pinned.
I charge the rangers and massacre them, moving towards the woods.
Turn 4: Them:
Thy move both stormtrooper squads to try and get LOS on my warrior squad, but fail.
There is no shooting or assaulting done by them this turn.
Turn 4: Us:
Nothing really moves except the raider shifting 7" towards the stormtroopers.
We kill the melta squad with shooting. We also manage to kill another stormtrooper with shooting. The haemonculi trips, causing everyone behind him to trip as well, and so the warrior squad only fleets a singe inch.
I try to assault with the warrior squad, but come up one inch short. Oops.
Turn 5: Them:
Nothing moves. They predictably roast the warrior squad.
Turn 5: Us:
Combined arms brings both stormtrooper squads down to three men, and at that point the other side concedes the game.
Final thoughts: It was a victory points draw. However, I was happy to see my army accomplish something as opposed to getting stomped into the dust like the last time I played. The Tau player also did very well, and we all hope we've hooked him into the hobby. Another game is planned for tomorrow, we'll see how that one turns out.
Any thoughts or suggestions for myself or the Tau player? Things we could have done better or differently?
haha the basalisk killed everything before its earthshaker cannon was blown off (its a shame about that) also why did they concede if it was a draw in victory points?
The objective was to kill everything. We didn't really care about victory points as a method of determining who won, it was who had units left alive at the end. The game was just very close.
The only thing I think you should've done is the after you've (I presume) turbo boosted the raider I would try get a line of sight on the basilisk. then the fire warriors can kill the stormies or eldar without much to worry about.
