Stealing the Kill
Hordes of screeching Tyranids overran the last of the PDF defenders at the promethium refinery. Even as bloody-muzzled Tyranids gnawed on the bodies though, a new smell rose above the stench of spilt promethium and guts. Exhaust and the pungent whiff of greenskin flesh. The Tyranids crouched protectively over their kills, then swarmed to attack these thieves.
Two Big Meks are intent on taking the refinery from the Tyranids, now that they've done all the work of slaughtering the defenders. To do this they have brought with them:
Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun
Big Mek with Force Field
4 mobs of boyz, each 20 strong with Nob w/power klaw and 2 Big Shootas.
2 mobs of 3 Killa Kans, all with Rokkit Launchas
Battery of 3 lobbas with Runtherd
The Nids are badly depleted, but a force assembles to counterattack.
Hive Tyrant with Tyrant Guard, Barbed Strangler and Devourers.
2 broods of Tyranid Warriors, armed with an assortment of Deathspitters, Devourers, Barbed Stranglers and Rending Claws
3 broods of Gaunts, armed mostly with Devourers.
Brood of Gargoyles
2 Carnifexes, both with Barbed Stranglers, one with a Venom Cannon, the other with Scything Talons.
We rolled for mission and got a Pitched Battle, Capture and Control. I placed my objective on the back edge of a refinery on my side, while my opponent placed his on the back edge of a set of ruins on his side, diagonally opposite.
I won the roll-off and elected to set-up first so I could get first turn. The battlefield was 4 large sets of ruins in a rough square, with a few scattered vats of chemicals and craters. The two on my side were a ruined factory with several stories on my right, and a maze of a refinery on my left, with a 12" or so gap between them. 2 mobs of boyz set up in or on the edge of the refinery, intending to use it as cover in an advance. In the centre the two mobs of kanz formed a 3x2 wall. Behind them were the other two boyz mobs, with the Big Mek attached to a mob in the centre of it all, Force Field humming. In the ruins on the right, the Big Mek with SAG and as many lootas as possible crammed onto the 1st and 2nd floors, the rest having to stay on the ground floor. Behind them the runtherd whipped the grots into positioning the Big Lobbas out of sight behind a wall intact enough to prevent direct fire against them. The ork army was tightly deployed in a dense line about 24" long at the end of this, following my usual practice of keeping my army together and not scattering it down my deployment zone.
In response the Nids adopted a similar layout. In the centre, looking straight at me over a couple of craters, a mass of gaunts, Tyranid Warriors, 2 Zoanthropes, the Tyrant and the Carnies deployed in three lines in the order gaunts/Warriors and 'thropes/TMC's. On my left in the ruins opposite the refinery a force of gaunts, Warriors and a 'thrope deployed. On my right in the ruins opposite went more gaunts and the gargoyles.
The orks surged forward, boyz scrambling through the refinery or skulking forward behind the kanz. Movement was simple and quickly resolved, so on to the shooting. All the shootas were out of range, but the numerous BS's opened up, felling a few gaunts here and there. The kanz fired off rokkits at the Warriors in the centre, killing one. The lobbas fired at the mass of gaunts, but scattered off the table, causing the runtherd to flay grot backs in rage. The SAG fired but scattered and only killed one gaunt, then the lootas opened up and a swathe of gaunts went down.
A bit alarmed at all the dead gaunts, the Tyranids also surged forward, advancing evenly all along the line to bring their weapons to bear. The gargoyles flapped round quickly to get close to the lootas. Tyranid shooting from the Tyrants and 'thropes was concentrated on the kanz. Barbed stranglers, devourers and warp blasts sizzled towards them. Again and again though they flared harmlessly off the Force Field, setting a pattern for the rest of the battle. Frustrated, the warriors concentrated on shooting boyz. Again though good cover saves saved the orks, and only a few of the ladz were lost. A carnifex fired at the lootas with its barbed strangler, scattering onto the lobbas instead though, killing 3 grots and wrecking a gun. The runtherd kept his slaves from running off, though they were pinned. The other 'fex had a go, and killed 2 lootas.
Ignoring the casualties, the orks surged forward again, closing up on the Tyranids. In the refinery one mob of boyz positioned itself in a long firing line along the edge, while the other scrambled up onto walkways above them. There was a menacing sound of over thirty shootas being cocked. In the centre the mass of kanz and boyz stomped forwards. Ork shooting was devastating. The boyz in the refinery first opened up on a mob of gaunts and nearly wiped it out, then the other mob killed two warriors. In the centre a hail of fire from the boyz who were now mostly in range also killed most of the remaining gaunts. Missiles from the kanz wounded a Tyrant Guard. The lootas and the SAG swivelled round and opened up on the descending gargoyles, wiping them out in an impressive display of AA work.
Driven on by the Hive Mind, the Tyranids didn't falter. In their movement phase they concentrated mostly on getting into cover or positioning themselves. More gaunts ran up to form a screen in front of the carnifexes, anxious to prevent the kanz charging them. Tyranid fire leapt at the orks, as two armies renowned for assault concentrated on a gun battle. This time more Tyranid shooting was concentrated on the boyz, as the kanz had proven dismally resilient, while the boyz were killing altogether too many Tyranids. The boyz scrambled for cover from the barrage, and were remarkably fortunate. One mob took 13 wounds from a barbed strangler, but passed 12 4+ cover saves to lose only one ork. At the end the boyz were depleted but still strong. The 'thropes and a carnifex fired at the kanz, but only managed to shake one of them.
The orks in the centre continued their advance to pile pressure on the Tyranids. The orks in the refinery stayed put and got stuck into a firefight with the Tyranids in the ruins opposite. Ork shooting was again devastating this turn, the gaunts were reduced to a few scattered survivors by the shoota boyz and lobbas, and a zoanthrope was shredded by the SAG and lootas, while in the centre only one warrior was left standing. The kanz were in range to charge the gaunts but having shot at the warriors could not do so. On reflection it was better though to stick with the boyz and especially the Big Mek's Force Field.
The Tyranids repeated their tactics of the last turn, concentrating fire on the boyz, though they proved unable to resist a few shots at the kanz. Despite the casualties they caused, reducing two mobs to a few survivors, no mobs broke, the nobs keeping order with a few cracked heads. At long last there was some success against the kanz, as one of them was immobilized. With the Tyranids now clearly badly outnumbered and outgunned the TMC's decided on a desperate counterattack. The Tyrant and his Tyrant Guard charged two kanz, while the Carnifex with rending claws charged another. Kanz rushed forward to pile in. In the centre the Tyrant smashed a kan which collapsed in a crumpled heap, but had his Tyrant Guard snipped in two by the other one. The carnifex fared less well, its wildly flailing attacks mostly missing the kanz who snipped off a chunk in reply.
By now there were few Tyranids left on the battlefield. The orks had taken a lot of casualties in two boyz mobs, each of which was now down to a nob and an ork with a BS. Two more mobs though still had some 15+ boyz each, most of the kanz were still fully operational, and the fire base in the ruins was little diminished. Declaring a waaagh, a boyz mob down to a few models ran out of the refinery, intending to attack a couple of warriors who had edged a bit too close. A mob of shoota boyz jogged up to attack the Tyrant wrestling with the kanz. Ork shooting was more limited this turn, and a lot of it pattered off the zoanthropes. Yet more gaunts died though. In assault the orks steamered in. The Tyrant ripped the klaw off the kan it was fighting, rendering it nearly harmless, but then had it's head torn off by the shoota boyz nob. The boyz mob leapt into assault against the warriors, losing several boyz but crushing a warrior with the nobs power klaw. The carnifex, by now surrounded by 3 kanz, was too slow and was pulled limb from limb before it could strike. The kanz used their consolidation to chase off after the remaining carnfex.
The Tyranids had little enough to hit back with, but did their best. Tyranid shooting though proved dismal, with scattering blast markers and missed shots all round. The last mob of gaunts with any strength charged at the shootas who had just killed the Tyrant, felling several with devourer fire. In assault the gaunts charged the boyz, and also the kanz who were actually somewhat closer. They dragged down a few orks, but were then easily wiped out by the orks and kanz. The warrior in the ruins missed the orks and was then crushed by the nobs power klaw, who ran off after a zoanthrope.
One mob of kanz stomped forward round a few errant gaunts left over from the earlier phases of the battle who were skulking round the Tyranid objective marker to hold it. The large mob in the refinery took up an advance to get in range of the gaunts round the objective marker. The lone nob that had just killed the warriors now moved up to get at a zoanthrope. The ork mob that had just killed the Tyrant proved unable to get over the wreckage of the kan, and in any case the Big Mek was trying to repair the damaged kanz. Ork shooting killed off much of what was left of the Tyranids. The lootas and SAG killed the last remaining warrior, the shootas shot most of the surviving gaunts, and the 5 kanz very badly wounded the remaining carnifex with rokkits. In assault the depleted boyz mob charged the zoanthrope, while the kanz charged the carnifex. The kanz rather predictably dismembered the carnifex, which was down to 1 wound before the fight began. The zoanthrope killed the last remaining boy, and the nob wounded the 'thrope.
With that the game was called without the Tyranid turn or rolling for another turn. Technically the game was a draw as the orks had abandoned their objective marker long ago in favour of an all out attack and the Tyranid one was still contested by a few gaunt survivors and a zoanthrope. Since all that was left of the Tyranid army was 2 zoanthropes and the tatty remnants of 2 gaunt broods though my opponent conceded victory.
In analysis I think I did rather noticeably have the better of the dice. In particular my kanz seemed to be invulnerable. Again and again my opponent attacked my kanz, only to fluff it on the to hit rolls, the armour penetration, the cover save or in the last resort the damage tables. By contrast the orks shooting, though uneven at times, was generally very effective. The Tyranids should probably have concentrated much more on shooting boyz rather than the very tough kanz. A lot of barbed strangler shots from the carnifexes were directed at the kanz, and they proved uniformly ineffective. As large blast markers these were the weapons that were needed for infantry killing, as when blast markers were used on the shoota boyz casualties were terrible. My tactics of concentrated deployment proved themselves again, with nearly all the orks able to engage the Tyranids all the time. Since my opponent responded similarly the game took the form of two walls of monsters closing on each other in a hail of fire. In assault though the orks plethora of power klaws tore the Tyranids apart.
Kudos for you for the report, and a big BOOOO!!!!! to your opponent for using probably the worst 1500 point Tyranid list that I have ever seen.
Nice report, and grats on the win!
pssstt....where are the genestealers? ;_;
Tyranid and Eldar player....don't ask me how I ended up playing these two armies, just smile, nod, slowly move away and don't make eye contact!
Unfortunately that nid list looks very similar to my first one (when i started 40k i assembled them in ways i thought looked cool and didn't care about the rules til a year later...OH THE SHAME!)
nice game, but ya, that nid list is not that great
WOLVES OF THE FELLBLADE........CHARGE!!
SONS of RUSS
No genestealers? What the heck?
