Today I played a nice game of warhmmaer 40k. Seeing as how the last 40k game I played was during 3rd edition, the games i've been playing lately have been sort of refreshers for me. I played against an Imperial Guard army with my tyranids. Ive been only playing small point games of 500 lately because i have morals against buying new models when I already have unpainted models to paint for my army. This time it was a game of 650 pts. Having beefed up my units and what not, I decideded to ditch the ripper swarms for upgrading the 'without numbers' ability for my 2 units of guants. Overall the points could have been allocated differently in my opinion.
Heres my list:
Winged, Enh. senses, TS, TW devourers
- 3 tyranid warriors
TW devourers, Enh. senses, TS, fleshhooks
without #'s, flesh hooks, fleshborers
Without #'s, flesh hooks, fleshborers
AM, feeder tendrils, flesh hooks
Imperial guard list looked something like this. Ill talk to him and ask for a specific list.
HQ unit with vox, platoon captain
3 platoon soldier units
- 2 grenade launchers
-flamer, plasma gun,
demo charge, las rifles
1 leman russ
The terrain was a very packed tight cityfight. all descriptions of terrain are from my table edge perspective. There was a large ruined 3 story building smack daddy in the middle flanked by a small ruin of walls, and to the right flank 2 small bunkers. In my deployment zone there were 3 seperate blocks of terrain each with decent sized ruined buildings. These 3 blocks all together spanned the tables edge. In the enemy's deployment zone held 3 of the same sized blocks of ruined buildings. One block held these big tubs of oozy green and orange stuff. Good cover in the beginning, middle, and end for the Tyranids hehe.
We rolled deployment and I won it. We were playing a standard annihilation game, so i deployed (hopefully i thought) for maximum potential. From right to left:
Genestealers running behind buildings that marked the right flank table edge. My hive tyrant came next, placing him behind some ruins, but in range to burst through a wall in that big daddy of a building in the middle. (This was a good vantage point for me because he ended placing his leman russ right across from my tyrant, but i got inside the building and shot from within) In the alleyway between the 3 story ruin and the ruin to the left of it, I placed some Spineguants. On the left corner I placed my 3 tyranid warriors in cover, with another unit of spineguants in front of them, ready to be shot at (and usually missed) to come back the next turn.
My enemies deployment, from MY right to left: Leman russ sitting behind cover, ready to show its ugly face. In front of the tank and a little to the left was a Special weapons squad taking cover on a second floor ruin. On the ground behind the SW swuad was a platoon of 14 soldiers, vox, what not. In the ruin that sat on his table edge, to the left of the platoon, was his HQ squad, basically doing nothing but to sit and wait to be eaten by my Hive Tyrant. next unit was 2 platoons of 10, lined up so that one recieved a cover save from the other. These guys had flamers and grenade launchers up the fanny.
He won roll, and let me go first, Which is fine by me, just means i get guants quicker.
Turn 1 -tyranids
Advances all units, runs all units. no shooting. The tyrant is now in that central ruin, inside the 3rd floor.
He creeps the platoon on the right up a few inches, moves special weapons squad off of the unit and on to the ground. Left platoon can see a small amount of guants peaking through an alleyway facing them missing 1 from 7 shots, but failing to wound anything.
Turn 2 -Tyranids
I move my tyrant to the other side of the central ruin, looking out of a window facing the SW squad. Shooting at the 5 puny humans, with a 12 shot reroll to hit and reroll to wound, my tyrant only wounds 3. Lame. SW squad passes moral test. The rest of my army all advance to, my genestealers are still making their way behind buildings to get that perfect flank attack.
His platoon on the right flank sees the potential threat incoming, and passes a difficult terrain test to get ontop of the same ruin the SW squad just got out of. The Sw squad gets out of the way and is in line of sight to throw a nasty demo charge at my gaunts advancing in the center, killing 5. His lemon russ shoots the large template gun ( i forget which one) trying to hit my Hive tyrant hiding in the central building. Theres always a constant battle between that leman russ and my hive tyrant because hes really the only reliable unit i have that can do someting about that damn tank and its big templates teabagging my genestealers. The shot from the leman russ scatters away from my tyrant and into the guants that just got hit by the demo charge. only 2 were left standing but my tyrant was in synapse range. Grenade launcher from the left front platoon shoots and misses with scatter.
Turn 3 Tyranids
I start to really rock it this turn. I placed a fresh unit of fleshguants on my table edge and advance most of my army. My tyrant smashes through the walls of the 3rd floor flying down to take aim at the platoon that was head height to the tyrant on the second floor of a ruin across the street from where the tyrant just was. Tyrant shoots, killing 5. the 2 guants shoot and miss the SW squad that just threw the Demo Charge. Guants that are riding with Warriors shoot at the platoon with 7 of 'em, killing 2. Warriors are out of range/line to shoot this turn. Tyrant assaults the leman russ in assault phase, destroying it with 2 penetrating hits. The 4" blast that occurred from this actually wound my baby tyrant (he rolled 6, i rolled 1 to save)
HQ squad and platoon sitting in a ruin in front of my vulnerable HT both take a couple shots at him, but i save them all. on the left side of the board the fire line of 2 platoons shoots and kills a crap load of my gaunts, 10 of them. oh well, i got without numbers.
My tyrant flys over to the platoon that is sitting in the ruin on the right along with my genestealers who've got flesh hooks, so they climb up the walls of the ruins to assault them as as well. the deadly combo of stealer and tyrant wipe that platoon out. The center gaunt unit that came back on the table from without numbers successfully charge the remainders of the SW squad, yet both the SW squad and the guants fail to do any damage to each other. the 3 warriors are finally in range to do some damage to the right platoon, shooting with devourers, i successfully kill 7.
At this point the IG player has about one and a half platoons are left on the battle field, and my whole army is closing in on them. They rush to find some cover in a covered building along the right flank. A lone flamer somehow passed its morale, able to aim at my incoming genestealer unit, killing 1.
My tyrant flys over to the the covered building his last platoon is in, kills 7. genestealers charge lone flamer killing it. one of my guant units is lurking, having entered the table edge this turn. the rest of them make their way towards the cowering unit of soldiers in the building.
shoots with a lucky rocket launcher, killing a guant.
my warriors finish off the last platoon with devourers, and he gives in. i'd say a pretty solid victory for my baby tyrant
i think in small point value games, its really hard for IG to do anything against tyranids, defensively or offensively. I have played against this guy many times, and knew exactly what to take out first, which was the leman russ. Because it was a city terrain lay out, i think it was harder for the IG player to utilize his leman russ so much because i played cover terrain very well. this is my first Battle report write up, and i had a lot of fun doing this. the most visited topic on these forums for me are the battle report sections. I find a plethora of info that is helpful for me in my games, both 40k and fantasy.
I've got some pics to in an attachment, so you can hopefully get a sense of my army. I would also like to here any critiques anyone has on my painting. color scheme title: Mean Green Eating Machines.
Nice mini-report, congrats on the win!
I always find IG quite hard for Nids in the first 2-3 turns; thank the lord for the abundance of terrain!
Out of interest, on your turn 3 the tyrant shot at some guard, but then assaulted the leman russ... Typo?
By the way, nice colour scheme too, very striking but still alien and gribbly looking!
Herald of the Colonel; Festooned with pistols, riddled with vermin, and finger lickin' good...
i dont think that is a typo. The tyrant was able to get down from the building and shoot, and in the assault phase was in range to charge the rear of the leman russ. am i missing something?
You can't shoot one until but assault a different one in the same turn; the only exception to this IIRC is you can shoot at a unit that has disembarked from a transport and assault the transport if the unit is destroyed, and visa-versa.
Herald of the Colonel; Festooned with pistols, riddled with vermin, and finger lickin' good...
ooh shoot my bad i thought because he has relentless he could target a different unit. but now i know.
Actually, you are fine to do that. Monstrous Creatures can shoot one squad and assault another, its in Relentless I believe.
relentless only says that you can fire rapid fire and heavy weapons on the move to full effect,
and then assault after firing those weapons.
the only situation i can think of that allows you to shoot one then assault another, is the transport vs passenger one.
