Crimson Fists vs. Dark Angels (1000 Pts)

NOTE: This battle was a playtest of the new 4th edition rules, as much as we know. We followed them pretty close, with only a few minor oversights.

The com-link chirped in Santos’ ear. A brief buzz of static was followed by a scratchy voice speaking Imperial high gothic. “Captain Santos of the Crimson Fists, you have without doubt had opportunity to question the traitorous heretic Quentin Valto since you took him prisoner three days ago. I assure you that his ravings are the lies of a madman. Though he has attempted to incriminate us, the honor of our chapter as the First of the Emperor will never be stained by such irreputable slander. Please hand him over at once so that we might dispense justice and defend our honor.?

Captain Santos of the Crimson Fists recognized the voice of the Dark Angels chaplain that he had the displeasure of meeting during the Balur crusade. That crusade had been a long one, made longer by the intolerable arrogance of this Zedekiel and his inconsistent effort on behalf of the crusade forces. If half of what this traitor Valto caughed-up during his interrogation was true, then Santos had even more reason to dismiss the coy words of Zedekiel as nothing more than façade. Santos was tired of deferring to the whims of this chaplain. Though he held all chaplains in high regard as teachers of the Imperial creed, the fact that this one was not of his chapter made his reply that much easier.

“Chaplain Zedekiel, I have already contacted the Inquisition and they will arrive within the day to take custody of Valto and exact the Emperor’s justice upon his soul. I will certainly allow you to include your reply to his claims in the report I give to Inquisitor Falco when he comes.?

“Captain Santos, interrogation of this heretic is our chapter’s right and duty. I will not allow the Inquisition to do the work for us and so steal our privilege. If you do not surrender him within the hour, we will be forced to take matters into our own hands.?

Santos smirked, a gesture that was invisible to Zedekiel but evident by his reply.

“Then come and get him, you—“

The expletive of his native language, though unfamiliar to Zedekiel, could not be misconstrued. Santos smiled, knowing that it would have the desired effect. At last he would have the chance to put these Dark Angels in their place.

    CRIMSON FISTS FORCE
Captain Santos—Power Fist, Bolt Pistol, Iron Halo, Bionics
Squad Saldivar—10 marines: Sgt, 1 flamer, 1 Missile Launcher
Squad Alvarez—10 marines: Sgt, 1 flamer, 1 Missile Launcher
Squad Bremmer—5 marines: Sgt, 1 meltagun, Razorback with Smoke Launchers
Old One Calisto—Dreadnaught with Twin-Lascannon, Powerfist, Storm Bolter
    3 Attack Bikes
Predator Annhilator with Heavy Bolter sponsons

    DARK ANGELS FORCE
    Leader—Lightning Claws
    Dreadnaught—Twin Lascannon, Powerfist, stormbolter
Tac Sqaud 1—7 marines; 1 missile launcher, 1 meltagun
Tac Squad 2—7 marines; 1 plasma cannon, 1 plasma gun, Vet Sgt with Bolter-Grenade Launcher
Tac Squad 3—7 marines; 1 missile launcher, 1 meltagun, Vet Sgt with power weapon and plasma pistol
    2 Ravenwing Landspeeders with Multi-meltas
Devastator Squad—8 marines; 4 heavy bolters, Stubborn Vet Sgt with Bolter-Plasma gun

This was a basic Cleanse mission, with the table divided into four quadrants: N, S, E, W
--North quadrant had a small hill in the center with a ruined building on it, and a small wood.
--South quadrant had the large ruined Administratum building, towards the center of the table
--West quadrant had a wood that was approximately centered in the quadrant
--East quadrant had a wood that was approximately centered in the quadrant
A road flanked by low stome walls and hedgerows ran East to west between the ruined administratum building and the hill with the ruins on it.

The Dark Angels won the roll-off and chose to set up in the North quadrant. He placed the Devastator squad in the ruins on the hill, and Tac 3 was in front of them in the small wood. The Dreadnaught and Tac 1 were poised to march into the West quadrant, while the Leader and Tac 2 prepared to head for the East quadrant. The Ravenwing speeders set up out of sight behind the hill.

The Crimson Fists set up in the South quadrant, with all units in and around the ruined Administratum building. Squads Saldivar and Alvarez broke up into combat squads, with the Sgt’s taking the flamers and leaving the missile launchers with the other half of their squads (combat Squads Hurst and Vargas). Alvarez and Saldivar set up near the edge of the ruins, hoping to cross the road and take the hill. Old One Calisto set up in cover just to their right, while the Predator Tank deployed to their left to fill a gap in the ruin and get a good field of fire. The other combat squads (Hurst and Vargas) took up postions on the corners of the ruin towards the East and West edges where they had good line of sight with their missile launchers. Santos would accompany Squad Bremmer in the Razorback, which deployed behind Calisto, and the Attack Bike Squadron deployed behind the ruins toward the Western flank.

So, it appears that Zedekiel would not deign to face me, Santos thought. Very well. I will destroy his force and send him a message—those who aren’t for us, are against us. Take what is left of your company and go hide in your Rock. Our crusade doesn’t need you.

As Santos stood in thought, the dark green figures of the enemy were advancing into position around a small hill. He saw some landspeeders swoop in over the distant ridge but could not see them now, hidden behind the ruins on the hill. This force just dropped from orbit and lacked any armor save a dreadnaught which was stalking across an open field. He would have to use this to his advantage, he mused.

“Sergeant Bremmer, please see to the disposition of our forces. We’ll form up in these ruins. I want a frontal assault--we’ll use our armor as a screen and take that hill in the center of their line. Put our fire support units on our flanks.?

    “Yes, brother Captain.?

    TURN ONE
The Crimson Fists got the first turn. Old One Calisto moved through the rubble to the edge of the ruin to draw a bead on the enemy dreadnaught, but the movement spoiled his aim. The missile launcher of squad Hurst and the Predator’s lascannon also targeted the ancient machine, destroying both its lascannon and powerfist. The Razorback moved out of the ruins to the hedgerow along the road and fired smoke, followed by squad Alvarez. Squad Saldivar exited the other edge of the ruins and also made for the road, though they had to cross some open field. The bolters and missile launcher of their brothers in squad Vargas covered their advance, suppressing the enemy’s Tac 3 in the woods ahead of them. On the other flank, the Attack bikes killed an enemy trooper from Tac 1.

The Dark Angels responded quickly to the advance of the Crimson Fists. Tac 2 and the Leader made it to the edge of the wood in the East quadrant. The Dreadnaught moved towards the hill from the flank, now that it had no lascannon to threaten the tanks of the Fists. The Ravenwing launched their counterstrike and both landspeeders fired at the rapidly advancing Razorback. One hit, but only managed to glance through the smoke. The shot left the crew shaken, but the vehicle was otherwise unharmed. Return fire from Tac 1’s missile launcher destroyed Calisto’s lascannon. Tac 3 fired back at squad Vargas but were ineffective. The Devastators then opened up with their heavy bolters on squad Vargas and sent shards of rockcrete flying everywhere, but the Fists’ armor saved them. However, one Devastator with a bolter took careful aim and dropped one of Vargas’ men with a headshot.

    TURN TWO
The Crimson Fists continued their advance. In the West quadrant, squad Hurst fired on Tac 1 but failed to harm them with the frag round. In the North, Old One Calisto charged to the edge of the hill ahead of squad Alvarez. Together with squad Vargas they poured fire into Tac 3 and killed three Dark Angels marines. The Razorback plowed through the difficult terrain up the hillside and stopped; Capt Santos and Squad Bremmer dismounted with speed and precision, using the tank to cover them from the guns of the Dark Angels Devastators. While Tac 3 was subdued by enemy fire, Squad Saldivar braved the open ground in hopes of engaging the Devastators in close assault. Meanwhile, the Predator and Attack bikes focused all their firepower on the Ravenwing Landspeeders. The Predator missed with its twin-linked lascannon, but brought down one speeder with its heavy bolters. The other speeder jinked all the incoming fire from the Attack bikes.

The Dark Angels responded with a pre-emptive assault by Tac 3 on Squad Bremmer and Captain Santos. Their fire was effective, with the plasma pistol and melta gun blasting two of the Fists’ troopers. Tac 1 used its missile launcher to disable Calisto’s close combat fist. The Dark Angels dreadnaught moved towards the top of the hill from the west. Tac 2 and the leader made it into the wood in the East quadrant and took up firing positions. The remaining Ravenwing speeder fired at the Predator, but all the jinking ruined the gunner’s aim and he missed. The Devastators sighted in on Squad Saldivar and mowed down all five marines in a hail of bolts. Tac 3’s assault ensued, and the veteran sergeant caused 2 wounds with his power weapon. Santos barged his troops out of the way and took the blows; one was deflected by his Iron Halo but the other left him with a grevious wound to his shoulder. His powerfist hummed to life, however, and dealt swift death to three Dark Angels; the Veteran Sergeant fled 12? in panic, while the Fists consolidated.

    TURN 3
The Crimson Fists knew the fight had reached a crisis point. Old One Calisto, cursing the loss of his close combat weapon, nevertheless surged ahead and made the top of the hill, screening Squad Alvarez who were close on his heels. Together with the Razorback they poured fire into the ruins, but the Devastator squad kept their heads down and escaped the fulisade unscathed. Squad Bremmer and Captain Santos, having regrouped and consolidated, advanced and fired upon Tac 1 who were now in charge range. The meltagun felled one marine, but their armor saved them from the bolt pistol shots. The Predator tank fired at Tac 2 in the wood in the East Quadrant, killing 1 hapless Dark Angel trooper with its Lascannon. Missiles from squads Hurst and Vargas lanced toward the enemy dreadnaught, attempting to finish it off, but were unsuccessful. Heavy bolter casings continued to pile up around the Attack bikes, who managed to blow the multi-melta off the Ravenwing speeder. In a decisive move, Santos led a charge against Tac 1; Sgt Bremmer hacked down two with his chainsword, while Santos finished off the squad. They proceeded to regroup and consolidate 6? to the bottom of the hill on the West side.

The Dark Angels were in trouble. The Dreadnaught and the lone Veteran Sergeant from Tac 3 advanced to charge Squad Bremmer and Santos. The plasma pistol brought down another marine, but the storm bolter failed to wound. The Ravenwing speeder zipped around to the backside of the ruined Administratum building to take cover from the Crimson Fists behind their own line. The Devastators had no line of sight to Squad Bremmer or Squad Alvarez because the Razorback and the Dreadnaught blocked their line of sight. Knowing they couldn’t harm the Predator, they focused their firepower once again on squad Vargas. Shards of rockcrete exploded around them, but the heavy bolters were again ineffective. The sniper with the bolter made another headshot though, and Vargas’ combat squad was down to three troops. Tac 2 fired its plasma cannon at the Predator, hoping for a lucky shot, knowing they had no other weapons capable of damaging it. The shot failed to penetrate the thick armor, however. In a last ditch effort, the Veteran Sergeant of Tac 3 charged in alongside his ancient brother the dreadnaught, only to have Squad Bremmer and Santos deftly dodge all their attacks. Santos’ used his attacks to destroy the dreadnaught, and the Veteran Sergeant was sent packing by Bremmer and his remaining trooper. Santos, Bremmer, and the meltagunner consolidated and prepared to charge the ruins in the next turn.

    TURN 4
Old One Calisto had to make it at least 5? through difficult terrain in order to get in charge range of the Devastators. He managed 6?, as did Squad Alvarez behind him. The Razorback covered their advance, killing one of the Devastators with its twin heavy bolter. Squad Vargas moved out of their position to avoid the massive enemy firepower and preserve their numbers, in hopes of moving into the East quadrant to challenge Tac 2 for possession of that sector. The Predator gave covering fire to their advance, killing two more of the Dark Angels Tac 2 squad. Hurst likewise moved his squad into the West quadrant, having no viable target for their weapons. The Attack bikes chased down the Ravenwing landspeeder and finally sent it crashing to the ground with Heavy Bolter fire.

At this point, the Dark Angels player conceded the game. Tac 2 was one model from being taken below half strength, and would not be able to contest the East quadrant much longer, since both the Predator and Squad Vargas were closing in. The Devastators faced a flamer shot from Squad Alvarez, followed by an assault from Squads Alvarez and Bremmer and Calisto and Captain Santos. It was an assault they could not win, and could not fall back from (being stubborn). End result: Crimson Fists control 2 quarters and contest the other two.

This battle was an exciting game for me, but would have been a much closer game if he had put his leader with Tac 3 instead of Tac 2, and used his plasma firepower to better effect. He had some unlucky rolls with his multi-melta shots from the landspeeders, but even the loss of the Razorback and the Predator would probably not have won him the game. Captain Santos was once again the man of the match, accounting for 6 Dark Angels and the dreadnaught.

The broken bodies of the Dark Angels lay about the ruins. They asked no quarter, and none was given. Santos was certain that the Inquisition would investigate the matter, but he was equally certain that he would be exonerated. The Crimson Fists had long enjoyed a special relationship with the Inquisition, while the Dark Angels were mostly at odds with them. Soon Falco would extract the whole truth from the heretic Valto; then he might just call upon the Crimson Fists again…. Beware, Chaplain Zedekiel…beware!

A nice report, it was good to see some balenced armys fighting against each other it shows what a good game you can have if people pick 'fluffy' army lists. I would of like the dark angels to win though  there my second favorite space marine chapter.

That's what the Dark Angels should do man. The complete antithesis of Blood Angels, pure plasma anc shooty (except for Deathwing and Ravenwing).

    Deathwing player here.

Good job on the win, it was nice that the Dreadnought got to see combat. That's always fun.

Well done. BTW, they'd better have been heretics!
