I've never really played Tyranids before, though I have played against them many times (they are my brother's army). Recently, I decided to try them out and so borrowed them from my brother. I played 4 games in 2 days. As I didn't take notes, the batreps will be short as they are from my memory and my memory isn't what it used to be.
GAME 1 vs TAU - 1700pts
HQHive Tyrant - Enhanced Senses, Adrenal Glands (WS), Enhanced Senses, 2x TL-Devourers, Toxin Sacs, Warp Field, Wings
Hive Tyrant - Adrenal Glands (WS,I), Bio-plasma, Extended Carapace, Flesh Hooks, Psychic Scream, 2x Scything Talons, Toxic Miasma, Toxin Sacs
3x Tyrant Guards - Flesh Hooks
3x Tyranid Warriors - Enhanced Senses, Extended Carapace, Scything Talons, 2x Deathspitters, 1 Barbed Strangler + 1 Toxin Sacs
1x Carnifex - Adrenal Glands (WS), Flesh Hooks, Reinforced Chitin, 2x Scything Talons
46x Spinegaunts - Extended Carapace, Spinefist, Without Numbers
3x Zoanthropes - Synapse, Warp Blast
2x Carnifex - Adrenal Glands (WS,I), Bonded Exoskeleton, Extended Carapace, Flesh Hooks, Reinforced Chitin, 2x Scything Talons, Tail Weapon - Scythe, Toxic Miasma
Commander Farsight w/5-6 bodyguards Crisis suits - plasma, fusion, ionic blaster, various weapons, drones
Stealth Team w/1 fusion blaster & drones
2x Fire Warriors Squads
2x Gun Drone Squads
Pathfinder Team in Devilfish Transport
3x Broadsides - Shield drone
Sniper Drone team
2x Hammerhead Gunships
1x Skyray Gunship
(I didn't realize his Heavies were illegal until I started writing this Batrep)
We played Seize Ground w/1 objective in the center (it was a GW custom game). He deployed all his troops on the edges and along the sides w/Broadsides & Skyray in 1 corner & the 2 Hammerheads in the other. I deploy my TMC's in the front w/2 carnies across from his Broadsides, 1 carnie + flyrant across from the hammerheads, walking CC tyrant in the middle. I win initiative.
I run all my TMC's (except flyrant which flies behind cover) and gaunts forward and the rest move normally. My Zoans and Tyranid Warriors fire and kill a few warriors and drones.
He moves his Devilfish and some drones. He fires all, kills a lot of gaunts and put a wound on a carnifex and 2 of my tyrant guards.
I run my TMC's again (except 1 carnifex + flyrant) and gaunts. I kill a few more warriors and drones. 1 Carnifex assaults a Piranha, destroying its weapon and immobilising it. My Flyrant assaults the Devilfish, destroys it's weapon and stuns it.
He moves some warriors, drones, Farsight & his bodyguards, dismounts his Pathfinders, and all open fire. He wipes out 2 units of gaunts and then some (but to his chagrin they come back next turn). He also puts a few wounds on my carnies, tyranid warriors, and tyrant guards.
Now I don't know if he was doing this right, but it seemed like Farsight+retinue was alternating fire between 1 carnifex, my warriors, and then my tyrant+retinue. I know they have special wargear, but it didn't seem right. First of all, he didn't declare who he was firing at in the beginning and declared when he was firing each model individually. Secondly, he said that each model could fire at separate targets. I didn't argue and just let him do it. I figured he probably didn't know his own rules too well. Afterwards Farsight & company jumps back behind cover.
My dead gaunts respawn and runs toward the objective. This turn is mine to shine as all my TMC's are within assault range. My warriors and zoans fire and kill almost wiped out 1 drone unit and put a couple of wounds on Farsight's retinue. 1 Carnifex charges the 2nd Piranha & destroys its weapons and immobilises it also (I can't believe I didn't destroy both stationary A10 vehicles!). The 2nd carnifex assaults his Broadsides and kills 1. The 3rd Carnifex charges the pathfinders and kills some, but they pass their LD. My Flyrant assaults a Hammerhead and immobilises it as well as destroy both its guns. My gaunts shoot down the last gun drone (though he still had another squad of gun drones hugging the side edge).
Another thing which I wasn't sure about was when he told me his shield drone gave all the Broadsides 4++ saves. I just gave it to him, and they tied up my carnie for 3 player turns of combat before I finally wiped them out.
He tries to move his other Hammerhead away from my Flyrant. Farsight & retinue jump forward and all fire. I lost the rest of my tyrant guards, 2 warriors, 1 zoan, some gaunts, took a couple of wounds on my 2 tyrants. In assault, I kill all but 1 pathfinder...he flees. I also kill another Broadside.
I run all my gaunts and also 1 carnifex towards Farsight. I try to position as much of my units between his units and the central objective. Shooting takes away 2 of Farsights bodyguards. His hammerhead can't get away fast enough as my flyrant immobilises and destroys it's weapons also (I can't seem to destroy his vehicles). 1 unit of gaunts within range charges his lone pathfinder and stealth team (they're locked in combat the rest of the game). My lone tyranid warrior charges Farsight+buddies and dies in vain. The carnie destroys the Broadside's shield drone.
He moves his devilfish towards the objective to contest it (probably hoping I'd forgotten about it). Not much movement, but in shooting, Farsight + friends shoot down 1 carnifex (the elite one), and another Zoan. My carnie destroys his last Broadside in combat.
My flyrant flies and shoots down some fire warriors (couldn't quite reach Farsight). The carnifex who just finished off the Broadsides run towards Farsight. 3 units of gaunts move to within firing range of Farsight (they're still w/in range of objective to claim it) and let loose, killing another. My carnifex just barely charges his Devilfish and destroys it, rolling 2 6's to hit (whew...).
He concedes the game.
GAME 2 to come ....
GAME 2 vs NECRONS - 1500pts
Same as Game 1 except I took out the Tyranid Warriors and about 12-14 gaunts.
Necron Lord - Jetbike body, Resurrection Orb, Warscythe
3x Warrior Squads
2x Heavy Destroyers
Basically we played on the same table as Game 1 so all same terrain and rules (again Pitched Battle). I win Initiatve.
My opponent kinda had his rules mixed up between 4th & 5th. Several things he said:
1) if blast shot scattered out of its max range, then it automatically missed
2) because his Monolith was a skimmer, I have to roll 6 to hit it if it moves
3) my respawning gaunts couldn't score.
I corrected him on #1 & #2. I wasn't sure on #3 so I just hid one of my units of gaunts behind some ruins out of LOS.
Though I didn't have much shooting, I shot down 6-7 Necron warriors to start off the game (I think 2 came back only). Everything else that couldn't shoot just ran.
His Monolith and fired its Particle Whip and put a wound on my elite Carnifex. His heavy destroyer put another wound on one of my tyrant guards. The rest of his shooting was ineffectual.
I move some more and fire, killing just a few. My carnifex gets close to 1 of his warrior units. No assault yet.
He moves his Monolith and uses it to teleport the unit that was close to my carnifex away. At the same time his Monolith fires its Gauss flux arc, killing only a few gaunts. His HD puts a wound on my Flyrant. His Necron Lord + Wraiths charges my carnifex. I kill one wraith in combat and he puts a wound on my carnifex.
The beginning of the end. My Carnifex charges his Monolith and wrecks it. At this point he almost gave up. In CC, my carnie kills another wraith.
His shooting puts takes out 1 tyrant guard and 1 zoan. My flyrant was behind the wrecked Monolith so he couldn't shoot it. My carnie takes another wound and puts 2 wounds on his Necron Lord.
My CC Tyrant+guards charge his Lord + Wraiths, but had to go through diff. terrain in order to do so (I forgot they had flesh hooks...d'oh!). No matter, he failed to wound me and my Carnifex kills his Lord so my Tyrant didn't have anyone to attack.
His Lord comes back to life but he then fails all 3 of his wraith's 3++ saves from my carnies attack. My tyrant goes on to massacre his lord again.
At this point he concedes, not very happy with my army and his bad dice rolling. He also couldn't get to the objective (whereas my gaunts were already claiming it) with my TMC's in the way and his only chance to contest it get wrecked back in turn 3. I felt a little bad as he just didn't have much that could hurt my T6/7 2+ 4/5 wound TMC's.
GAME 3 to come ....
While normally I like to see the Tau win, well, I'm just giggling over how his list was so illegal yet still loses. (Or perhaps he lost because of his many many heavy supports and little else. I'm wagering a balanced (and legal!) list might've done better. Anyways~)
As for what's illegal, well, basically everything you suspected was fishy. And maybe more.Given how Farsight's retinue are the pricier Shas'vre (Hero) as opposed to Shas'ui (Veteran), they are allowed to take hard wired target locks, so yes, they can all fire individually, though that's, well, 30ish points that could probably easily have been halved and put to better use elsewhere. Not declaring who he was firing at doesn't sound quite that legal to me. Did he just roll dice and then say who he was shooting at?Now I don't know if he was doing this right, but it seemed like Farsight+retinue was alternating fire between 1 carnifex, my warriors, and then my tyrant+retinue. If he had burst cannons he'd actually have three weapons, though there is the very good possibility he went with the more expensive missiles since "expensive=better". :pMy Flyrant assaults a Hammerhead and immobilises it as well as destroy both its guns.Shield drones only have invincible 4+ saves for themselves (so they're good for wound allocation, but hardly that good.).Another thing which I wasn't sure about was when he told me his shield drone gave all the Broadsides 4++ saves.
Nice report, good to see a 'nid player beating the tar out of the upstart Tau. Now, to address the points you raised:
1) If Farsight & Co. all had a certain piece of wargear, they can, indeed, shoot at separate targets, but only if they all have that certain piece of wargear.
2) The drone... no, only the drone itself has got an invulnerable save. It doesn't magically grant it to the entire unit.
After doing the batrep, I think his Fast Attack is illegal also. For the Tau player, he had 2 units of 6-8 gun drones each. Whether that is a separate detachment, I don't know. He also had 2 gun drones on his Piranhas. When my carnifex destroyed his weapon, he removed both drones. Was he supposed to only remove 1 at a time? I wasn't sure but I thought he should know about his own armies' weapons (I didn't know how many weapons on each of his vehicle).
As far as Farsight and his retinue, he went back and forth. He would declare who one of his bodyguards was firing at and then go on to the next one. He would then come back later to that model and declare that he was firing his other gun at another guy. He did declare who he was firing at before rolling though. Basically he jumped around between guys shooting. I got confused as to who was firing at whom so I just let him do it because I didn't think it would matter. They were still going to become carnie food.
I believe he had missiles on his Hammerheads. I think I destroyed the railgun on 1 and both weapons on the other. As I recall, I think the only unit he could shoot was locked in combat and the rest maybe had LOS blocked. Also not sure if he forgot about them.
I'll tell him next time I see him that he was playing the shield drone 4++ wrong.
Yeah, a gun drone squadron takes up one slot, two take up two. So he was one over.
Furthermore, drones on vehicles aren't weapons, they're passengers, so if he got weapon disabled, well, there's only one weapon on a Pirahna to disable. So add that to his list of things he wasn't supposed to do. :p
(Especially since those gun drones are actually potential KP)
GAME 3 vs CHAOS SPACE MARINES - 1500pts
Same as Game 1 except this time I took out the Elite Carnifex and about 15-16 gaunts.
Daemon Prince - Gift of Chaos, I believe Mark of Tzeentch, not sure what else
5x Possessed - Fleet (that's what he rolled)
6-7x Marines - Mark of Nurgle (not sure if they were Plague Marines), various wargear
10x Marines - Mark of Khorne (not sure if they were Berzerkers), various wargear
10x Marines - Mark of Khorne (not sure if they were Berzerkers), various wargear
I played this last week. By now I've forgotten some of the details already as I didn't take notes, so I apologize for the brevity of the report. We played on a map with a big Cathedral ruin (about 18"x18" or so). This time we rolled and got Annihilation + Pitched Battle.
Forgot who went first, but it didn't really matter, we both moved our guys forward and didn't do too much shooting. I did kill a few marines during shooting and he killed some gaunts.
He claims the first KP as his Daemon Prince, needing a 6 on 1d6, does just that and turns my dakka-flyrant into a chaos spawn (but since he didn't have the model, my flyrant just died). He unloads his bolters, defiler cannon and other guns on my guys but manages just to wound a few of the warriors. I in turn kill a few marines and possessed with my shooting. I gotta say, I love using Warp Blast on MEQ's...it's the tyranids equivalent of a lower-powered Plasma Cannon on them.
CSM: 1 Tyranids: 0
Now everyone is within assault range and does so. His DP tries to turn my Carnifex but to no avail. Some shooting sees more marines killed and not much else. Then its assault time. Walkrant assaults the Possessed, one carnifex assaults a squad berzerkers, and the other carnifex assaults the DP. I wipe out the possessed and the berzerkers. His 2nd unit of berzerkers counter-charge my Carnifex but can't harm it. The DP & Carnifex battle to a draw (both takes 2 wounds).
CSM: 1 Tyranids: 2
More fighting. Typhus+retinue charges my carnifex and my hive tyrant charges the berzerkers. Typhus rolls a 1 for his weapon and can't attack (good thing considering he could potentially attack 10x on a charge and wound on 4+). His marines couldn't do much to my T6/T7 2+ TMC's but managed to kill a tyrant guard. In return I wipe out his berzerkers and most of the nurgle marines and also cause 2 wounds on Typhus. The DP puts another 1-2 wounds on the Carnifex but gets killed in return.
CSM: 1 Tyranids: 4
After Turn 4, he had to leave as his ride was here so we stopped. His Defiler didn't do much as by Turn 3, his LOS was for the most part blocked and I moved my infantry out of his LOS. Basically my Zoans, gaunts and warriors watched the battle as I didn't want to give him easy KP's and his troops couldn't do anything to my TMC's.
GAME 4 vs ORKS - 1500pts
Same as Game 3. This time I upgraded my carnifexes with Toxin Sacs at the expense of 2 gaunts.
Warboss - upgraded
Big Mek w/Kustom Force Field
15x Lootas - 1 Kustom mega-blasta
15x Kommandos - Snikrot
10-12x Ork Boyz on Trukk
10-12x Ork Boyz on Trukk
10-12x Ork Boyz on Trukk
30x Ork Boyz
Looted Wagon - Boomgun
We played on the same table & terrain as game 3. This time we played the GW custom game. The objective is this huge 18"x18" cathedral which the orks are defending. Before we started play I already knew that this was going to be a draw. How the heck am I going to prevent all those orks and vehicles from contesting the objective. It's so huge. And I don't think he'll be able to stop my TMC's and respawning gaunts from contesting either.
Wow. Those trukks are sure fast. Move 19" and then the orks can still disembark, shoot and then assault! But still can't do much against my TMC's. Funny moment of the game was when his Loota with the Mega-blasta died from heat exhaustion.
He assaulted my TMC's with almost everything he had but only managed to put a couple of wounds. I, on the other hand, took out just about everyone who assaulted me. The end came after turn 5 when I rolled a 1. The flyrant was in cc with 1 mob of ork boyz and the walkrant was fighting another inside the cathedral. I had 2 carnifexes rushing the cathedral who would've been assaulting next turn. I had destroyed all his vehicles except for the Looted Wagon, which my zoanthrope was trying to destroy. My spinegaunts were also rushing to intercept his lootas to prevent them from trying to contest the objective. Things didn't look too good for him if it went to turn 6.
Overall I lost my warriors, 2 zoanthropes, and the 3 tyrant guards. All 4 of my TMC's were still around.
He lost everything but his lootas, looted wagon, and 2 quickly dwindling mobs of ork boyz.
And yet it was still a tie.
Good to see a list that isn't strictly 8 TMCs doing well too, even if the Tau guy was cheating like mad.
From page 70 of the rulebook: "fast transport vehicles: passengers may not embark onto or from a fast vehicle if it has moved (or going to move) flat out in that movement phase"
The open topped rules do not state that there is an exception to the flat out rule.
