Not sure if I should post this here, or in the BFG section. I figure that since it's a batrep, taking place in the 40K universe, it would fit in here.
Last night some friends and I got back into Battlefleet Gothic, and I had a blast playing a small game pitting my Imperial fleet against a Space Marine fleet. As normal in our group, it was a dice roll for who the ‘loyalist’ would be. Of course, this time I lost, so my Imperial’s were doomed to be the dirty heretics. Here were the fleets:
SM Strike Cruiser “The Emperor’s Scion”
SM Strike Cruiser “The Righteous Fist”
3 Gladius Escorts “Spears of Faith”
3 Nova Escorts “Flames of Retribution”
Gothic Cruiser “Herald of Wrath”
Gothic Cruiser “Scourge of Pavone”
Dictator Cruiser “Harbinger of Vengeance”
4 Cobra Escorts “Reavers”
Captain Andrei stood at the command pulpit of the Emperors Vindiction, newly renamed the Harbinger of Vengeance. The command pulpit was still slick with the blood of it’s former captain. Andrei’s mutiny had been quick and effective, turning 3 cruisers and 4 escorts away from the path of the Corpse Emperor and leading them against their comrades as they escorted a merchant fleet along the edge of the Damocles Gulf. Now, two strike cruisers from a chapter that Andrei had never heard of were approaching with their attendant escorts. Andrei had turned from the wreckage of the mutiny to greet them with the open arms of true Chaos. The vox crackled to life,
“This is Captain Voral of the Grey Hawks, stand down as we are inspecting a possible rebellion” the grey armored space marine looked imposing, but was a mere puppet of the Corpse Emperor.
“Captain Voral, this is first mate Andrei, ranking officer aboard the Emperor’s Vindiction, I am prepared to stand down and set a course for your vessels, we were set upon by mutineers and require repair.”
The three cruisers fired their engines and drifted towards the Marine fleet. The Reavers however went on All Ahead Full and raced along the edges, towards the Loyalist flank.
“Mate Andrei, come no closer- fire retroes and bring your escorts back into the fold or you will be met with hostilities”
Andrei responded with a wave of torpedoes from each of the three cruisers. His vessel and The Herald of Wrath fired directly at the Marines, seeking to cut down the Gladius squadron that was screening the two Strike Cruisers. The Scourge of Pavone fired it’s volley between the Strike Cruisers and Reaver squadron, forcing the marines to keep their distance.
The Marines immediately went on evasive actions. The Spears of Faith raced around the torpedoes towards the port side of Andrei’s vessel. The Flames of Retribution moved to engage the Reavers. The strike cruisers were split by the torpedoes, Voral deftly maneuvering The Emperor’s Scion between the two waves, while The Righteous Fist moved to let them blaze past it’s port side. The Flames of Retribution fired their weapons at the Reavers, but the traitors were moving quickly across the front of their targeters, and they had been surprised by the suddenness of the traitor attacks. Their attacks went wide, firing the shields on only one of the vessels.
Andrei smiled with a wide, madman’s grin as he closed with the Emperor’s finest. He ordered the Herald of Wrath to Lock On it’s weapons. He also ordered his own vessel, and the Scourge of Pavone to reload their ordnance. Unfortunately, he spent far too long shouting the order at the Scourge, and neither of vessels reloaded a single torpedo.
As the vessels drifted towards the enemy fleet, Andrei’s plan began to work. The Reavers turned towards the Spears of Faith and fired their weapons at the closing escorts. The weapons hit at mass effect, immolating one of the small vessels and stripping away the shields of a second. The Harbinger fired her weapons batteries at the Flames of Retribution, although the shots missed the tiny escorts. The Herald of Wrath fired at both squadrons with accurate broadsides from her lance batteries, leaving the Flames of Retribution as balls of expanding gas and wreckage, and battering the shields of the Spears.
Andrei knew too well to fear the Thunderhawks of the Space Marines, so he quickly dispatched flights of fighters from his ship to attach to his comrades. To lose a ship now could cost him his own life, so the expense of a few of his few fighters was more than acceptable.
The marines reacted quickly, Andrei had expected them to respond to the loss of their vessels, but they continued undaunted. Voral skewed the Scion to starboard just in front of the Scourge of Pavone, leveling her batteries menacingly at the cruiser. The Righteous Fist came across the prow of the Herald and also made ready to fire.
Both ships poured a punishing volley into the Herald. Andrei watched the ancient vessel’s shields buckle and give way, and then watched as the round from a Bombardment Cannon smashed the bridge apart, immolating the command staff.
The Spears of Faith continued the onslaught, launching a salvo of torpedoes into the side of the stricken vessel. Andrei’s attached fighter squadron barely managed to intercept them and fortunately none of the wave struck the battered ship.
Andrei saw that the battle truly hinged on his commands within the next few minutes. There would be blood for his gods, and carnage, but he fervently hoped that he would survive to see their rewards. He ordered all of the cruisers to lock onto their targets. First his own vessel, then the Scourge of Pavone. Finally, he managed to get a communique through to a battered Petty Officer aboard the Herald of Wrath, and got even the stricken vessel to lock on it’s weapons.
The three ships powered forward to positions between the two Marine vessels. The Herald and Harbinger both managed to split the vessels, while the Scourge came across the aft of Voral’s Emperor’s Scion. On Andrei’s mark the fleet let loose a devastating torrent of fire. The Harbinger overloaded the shields on both Strike Cruisers, while the Herald smashed a double broadside into both ships. The Scourge fired on the engines of Voral’s ship. The damage to both ships was extreme, and fires broke out along the decks of the Scion as it’s prow armament was torn apart.
Voral tuned out the alarms ringing throughout his vessel and ordered his fleet to stay on course and to lock onto their targets. The vessels all carried out his orders, except that the Spears failed to reload their torpedoes.
Voral’s ship was unable to draw a mark on the damaged Herald, and instead targeted the enemy flagship, the Harbinger. His weapons batteries glanced off the shields, bringing them to half strength, but his Bombardment Cannon managed to score two telling hits against the vessel. If there was further damage, Voral could not see it. The Righteous Fist was far more punishing in it’s barrage. Although both Strike Cruisers were crippled, the Fist was able to hit with almost the full force of its remaining weapons and cannons. Voral watched as the shots ripped through the Herald, their exit wounds disabling the entire starboard lance battery and ripping apart the prow armament as well. The ship was rocked with the force of the blow, but Voral’s heart sank when he saw that it remained intact and fighting. Another alarm signaled that the fires had taken his dorsal weapons offline. His great cannons had been silenced.
The Spears passed quickly along his port side, still trying to reload their ordnance and come about to fire at the sterns of the enemy fleet.
Seeing the Spears' plan, the Reavers quickly moved in to intercept them. Meanwhile, Andrei ordered that the Gothics continue their steady aim, while his own vessel prepared the flight bays for a wave of bombers. The Herald had been too badly damaged for Andrei’s orders to get through, the Petty Officer most likely having been thrust into the void along with the starboard battery.
The Reavers fired their weapons batteries against the Righteous Fist, tearing down her shields and leaving her exposed to the revenge of the Herald. The lance batteries fired once more, and with a lucky shot reduced the proud Strike Cruiser to a deadened hulk, drifting listlessly through cold space. Andrie targeted his weapons batteries against his counterpart’s vessel, knocking down the Scion’s shields so that the Scourge could finish her off with it’s lances. Voral declared an immediate Brace for Impact, and the lances scored just one telling hit. However, the Reavers were not done. They let loose with a pointblank cluster of torpedoes. The powerful missiles gutted the Spears, leaving just one vessel alive, and then tore into the prow of Voral’s ship. One of the missiles carved deep into the vessel’s bowels, it’s timer fuse set a hair too long. When it detonated, the Scion burst into flames and fell off course, a lifeless, blazing hulk. Andrei called back his fighters and finished the battle with a wave of bombers, sent out against the last remaining escort from the Spears. The tiny ship was quickly overrun by the swarming attack craft, and succumbed in a could of debris.
Andrie had had two victories this day, and quickly his fleet pulled away from the fighting and raced out into the Gulf before more retribution could arrive.
holy man, very nice. its good to see a BFG bat rep. gj mate.
No sig required.
Pretty cool, I liked the way you set it out as a short story - much more entertaining!
For get your Mr T, John Mayer leaks pure awesomeness with every note he plays.
Very well played on both sides! I myself am playing a cruiser clash tonight against my friend, so you may see a battle report of mine up tomorrow as well...
Excellent! I would love to read it.
I just played a 2K game last night, but I'm horrified to try and write a report. It came down to a draw- I have no idea if it was bad admiralty or just a close battle. Maybe I'll try to hash it out. I will also have to update my fleet registry to cover my losses and newly commissioned vessels.
Very nicely done i like the story aspect and the command of your fleet i would love to play against you one day.
