Thanks to Dustan for the report
Unpainted models abound as I take the Eldar out for a rumble, matching up against
Marines is a good benchmark for me as most of my opponents have and use a Marine army. Its been a long time since I have commanded Eldar on the battle field and 12 - 14 years ago they were barely a speedbump. Once again a recently Codexed army so a whole bunch of new rules.
I have become a bit of a fan of the non-horde army, its nice picking fewer models, less to set up and all together a lot easier to play with.
2x 10 Tac. Marines (Flamer and Missle Launcher)
5 Devistators with 4 Heavy Plasma Cannons
Beil Tan Eldar (Dustan)
8 Striking Scorpions (Exarch with Scorpions Claw)
5 Fire Dragons (Exarch with Bright Lance)
5 Jet Bikes (1 Shurican Cannon
10 Dire Avengers (Exarch with Shimmer Shield and Power sword)
5 Ranger PathFinders
5 Swooping Hawks (Exarch with Hawks Tallon)
I also had some exarch powers but forgot them all or just didnt use them.
The Dawn Of War setup is quite an interesting one. Each Side sets up the core army, 2 Troop and 1 HQ. Anywhere on their half of the board. Night Fight is in play for the first turn and the idea is that 2 patrols have met and it quickly turns into a full on brawl.
Except for my Rangers =] Infiltrate let me snage the Fortified (Armour 14) bunker.
Dawn Of War
The first turns bigest event was that out troops turned up. The Ork in my always has a senior moment when I see heavy support. The only things I had to stop the tanks were the fire dragons, particularly the exarch and the swooping hawks.
Sticking behind the cover the Eldar deploy, I wanted to get as close as I could before revealing my troops, so I was trying to play a little cat and mouse. Yes my jetbikes have no bases.
Light shooting from the last turn only dropped a few models. The marines push forward to get in rapid fire range (bated by the Dire Avenge) The vindicator knocks on the door of the Bunker which holds firm. The nearby marines relocate, trying to get out of the fire ark of the bunker and its stunned ocupants. No we wernt to lazy to hide the ash tray, thats my pro tip on making smoke markers (Real Smoke)
The eldar Avengers fall back further hoping to draw the Marines in closer. Advancing under cover the rest of the army gets ready for the strike.
The Marines pool into the middle of the board, the marines themselves didnt kill much but the vindicator wiped half the firedragons off the board
The Eldar move forward and between assault and the bright lance both tanks are immobilised. The Avitar falls short on his charge but with a demonic invulnerable save of 4+ I dont feel to worried
The worst part about the end of this turn is The number of troops I left standing arround in the fire arcs of the immobilised tanks.
Combat ensues and after a rather messy time More Marines fall and the vindicator opens up a whole can of 'Oo-Lah' all over the jetbikes *sigh*
Racing past the front line the Eldar overwhelm the marines and seek cover from the heavy weapons in close combat. The Scouts forget to move out of the bunker. Oh yeah and this is an Awww Crap moment, its one of those occasions in which you wipe out the last of your Foe in your turns close combat.
As the last resistance is crushed the Eldar swarm towards the devistators to the only safe place on the board, Close enough to the Devs. for them to hit themselves
This was a realy fun game, there were times when my dice rolls worried me but my general plan to hang back and hit hard worked. I had a lot of redundancy in my army, the scouts had 2 or 3 turns of shooting before they were ou of LoS, The exarchs didnt use their powers and various other bits and pieces that were under utilised.
I think Z_Man fell into the same mistake as I did last time I played Steve. In Annihilation only Fully destroyed troop choices count towards victory, by leaving my Rangers is the AP 14 bunker they were pretty safe, the jetbikes got nailed but the Dire Avengers were half strength and about as far from the action as you could get.
Playing with missions is great change. So what if all the games end up as Annihilation, Its nice to be able to win by tactics and not just weight of numbers.
good report and looks like a really fun game, i totally agree playing missions makes it more intresting.
