Well I set up a small Game Club here in Omak, WA (If you live anywhere near...please come). Today suprisingly, somebody actually showed up who plays WH40k. So we decided to play...this being my first game.
We used the lid of one of my battleforce boxes and some books that were around for terrain.
1 Shas'ui TL PR + TA
1 Shas'ui TL MP +DC w/ 1 gundrone & 1 Marker drone
11 FWs + 1 GD+ Shas'ui
12 FWs +Shas'ui
1 Railhead w/DP +MT
His list: (probably not 100% correct)
Captain + Retinue (3 power weps + Relic Blade)- Has Rhino
1 Dread w/Melta
1 Dread 2/ Hvy Bolter + Smoke launcher
1 5 man Scout w/ Hvy Bolter
1 5 man Tac squad (Sarge w/ powerfist)
1 10 man tac squad Missle launcher + flamer (Sarge w/ powerfist)
We rolled Capture and Control
I set my objective a little to the right of the big mesa (being hasty we placed the objectives before the terrain)
He set his in the opposite corner of his deployment zone
He infiltrated his scouts near the objective he set.
I infiltrate my Kroot near the objective I set.
He got init and chose to go 2nd.
Turn 1 Tau
Movement: I split my forces moving my Shas'el, one D-fish, and the HH to the left side of the board to directly confront his forces. I move my Two Crisis suits to the right to quickly kill the scouts. A unit of gundrones is with each force. My other D-fish puts FWs on the objective in my deployment zone
Shooting: Hammer head uses that Railgun to make the Dread with the melt go boom.
Assault: My noobness shows as I forget to take my assault moves.
Turn 1 SM
Movement: his rhino goes right the rest of his force advances towards my force on the Shooting: Takes some pot shots. Puts one wound on the TL MP suit. His Tac Squad uses its ability to roll and move to move forward 4.
Turn 2 Tau
Movement: Move forward my force on the right a little. On the left I do something stupid and deploy my other FWs with the other Dfish...hoping to be in 12' for my FWs...they are at 13...ooops. The HH moves to support the right flank against the coming rhino and the command squad inside it. The rest of the right just advance a little.
Shooting: On the right the gundrones pour some fire into the tac-marine squad, Killing 2. The D-fish whiffs against the tac marines. The Crisis pours some plasma and missle pod into the squad, and whiffs. On the right the suits and drones shoot up the scouts killing 3. My HH puts a blast template on the now 8 man tac-marine squad....and kills 1.
Assault: I remember my Assault moves this time and make sure the drones and suits cannot be shot up.
Turn 2 SM
Movement- Scouts fall back. Rhino and Dread move up.
Shooting- The tac squad fails to kill the D-fish...the dread immobs it. The scouts heavy bolter whiffed.
Assault- Tac marines assault the D-fish and kill it.
Turn 3 Tau-
Movement- I move my HH closer to the right...a little to far. Suits and drones move to firing positions.
Shooting- FWs and Shas'el pot shot at the Dread...and failt to do anything. I moved the HH to far so it has no los. The Drones pour more fire into the Tac marines. They kill two more. One more scout marine drops. The Suits kill the rhino
Assault: Suits and Drones move
Turn 3 SM -
Movement- Nothing much. Dread and Tac marines move up. Scout marines secure and objective. He uses his dreads smoke launcher
Shooting- The FWs die.
Turn 4 Tau
Movement- HH moves back to support the left flank. Drones and suits move to shooting positions. Kroot grab objective.
Shooting- Between the HH and Shas'el the dread dies. Gundrones fail to kill any tac-marines. I finish off that last scout.
Assault- You know the drill.
Turn 4 SM
Movement- Captain squad moves around the dead Rhino. Tac marines move to be able to assault gundrones.
Shooting- Nothing dies!!!
Assault- Tac marines vs Gundrones. 1 Drone lives. Cap-squad versus Gundrones- 0 drones live.
Turn 5 Tau-
Movement- The left moves back. The right moves forward.
Shooting- Kroot give 6 wounds on the Caps squad...all saved. Plasma and missle pods whiff.
Assault- I do something different here...I promise. My TL-MP Crisis assaults the Cap squad...hoping to hold it for this last turn...it fails. The rest do the usual thing.
Turn 5 SM
Movement- Cap squad preps to attack the kroot.
Shooting- 2 Kroot die.
Assault- 10 Kroot die...
Dice roll is 1, game ends
We say its a draw, we each have 1 objective. He has 4 KPs I have 3
Things I learned:
FWs are really squishy. Be careful. Use them to secure objectives...because kroot are even squishier.
Outflank kroot. They could have killed the scouts and secured the objective on that side.
Hammerheads are gods.
TL-plasma is definetly overpriced for what it does.
Good write-up. I find SM armies difficult to kill with Tau because of our limited AP3 options. And the AP3 that we DO have isn't very good (sniper drones, vespid, etc.). We have to use our advantage of SPEED. His rhino was probably a better first-turn target than his dread, because the dread wouldn't be within melta range by his turn (except for kroot but that would be a bad target). Also, rhinos are good to kill early, so that he has to run across the field. As I said, we must use our speed.

We were on a very weird shaped table. I could not draw Los on the Rhino (I did want to blow it up first)
Your opponent actually had 1 squad of 10x scouts. He just combat squadded them to 2 smaller 5-man units.
His list is actually very bad against yours. He has to footslog it and endure all your shooting. His dreads have no long range capability and are basically sitting ducks to your HH. If you'd just tried to avoid close combat with your units (except the kroot), you'd probably win.
Yeah next time im busting out more Crisis suits...and hes using Termies *gulp*
If he takes his termies, then just take plasmas on your crisis. Then jump, shoot, jump.
i am confused... Are you moving in the assaulting phase without actually assaulting anything? And on turn 5 did your crisis bite it (die) if not then how would the cap squad have been able to assault the kroot?
Sounded like a fun battle.
crysis can leap a little in assault phase
Hight elf and Craftworld Eldar army project pics heavy: linky
Ah really that is an amazing advantage! Thank you for the info.
Crisis suits and hammerheads are the Taus backbone...Though I am learning of the amazingly underestimated power of gundrones.
