Last weekend I attended the northern 40k doubles, it went well but unfortunately the score didnít represent how well we did in our games.
We had a tau army which consisted of: 2 groups of fire warriors in devil fish, both squads bonded and both devil fish had disruption pods; squad of fire warriors on foot, also bonded; 2 commanders with different out fits; big unit of Kroot with hounds and a shaper; 3 squads of sniper drones; 2 hammer heads with rail guns and disruption pods. For a doubles tournament 2 team mates have 750 pts each to come up with a 1500 pt army which fill a standard force organisation, both players have to take 1 HQ and 1 Troops as compulsory.
The first game was Dawn of War with 2 objectives, groans. It was a black templarís and standard marine team. We deployed first and had first turn. The game opened up with the hammer heads shooting large blast shots into the black templarís killing 3 not a bad start, until we remembered it was DoW and we could see them so the templarís came back, woops. The Kroot moved through cover to start getting ready for the push on there objective.
In the marines first turn we got to see there army. Two squads of templarís tooled up; a dred with assault cannon; 2 standard marine squads; devastator squad with 2 missile launchers; and a vindicator. There first turn was also minor, the templarís moved forward and got into range with a melta gun (not melta range) at a devil fish but the tanks armour was too thick and the shot bounced off without harm.
Our second turn and the sun had come up yey! Time for shooting! We opened up into the templarís with most of the army reducing them to a small number, which where brave or stupid enough to fight on. Shot at the vindicator but nothing substantial. The Kroot moved forward towards the enemy objective but with a total of 3Ē moved (2 inch move 1 inch run!) didnít really have an impact.
Nothing happened at all in the space marine turn! Well they advanced and killed a single fire warrior with an assault cannon shot.
Our turn time to lay on the hurt! The first advancing squad of templarís get whipped out and the second squad takes some small losses. The vindicator got shot at but the shot bounced off the nearby wall.
In there turn again nothing happened, other than advancing and some missile shots at a devil fish which both missed, snake eyes!
Our turn most of the first power was concentrated on the surviving templarís, but they refused to die! One devil fish of Fire Warriors went towards there objective. The Kroot managed to get to the edge of the terrain feature they was in, about time.
In there turn the last of the black templarís hit into the fire warriors on foot defending our objective. The vindicator took a shot at the devil fish full of fire warriors but it scattered onto the Kroot, who then fell back 10Ē they had officially got back to where they started the game! In assault the templarís tore apart the fire warriors; they then moved to cover the objective but left them in the open.
Our finial turn and we needed to get claiming the objectives! One devil fish pulled back and unloaded his Fire Warriors to help shooting down the last templarís, the other devil fish move right next to the enemy objective. Shooting starts one hammer head blows apart the dred (it was variable game length if this thing had got into the fire warriors which had just jumped onto our objective could of lost us the game!) the fire warriors stayed in the devil fish near there objective to contest as been alone (which wasnít as planned) they wouldnít of been able to do enough damage or take the return fire. The most important shooting was saved to last, the massed fire power at the templarís on our objective. The fire warriors opened up killing 3! 3 down 3 to go. The sniper drones picked off the other 2 marines saving just the Chaplin. However my commander who had stud back and weighted for this very counter defensive moment made his move, he charged up his fusion gun, then missed! However it was twin link so with a second chance the shot hit, few! The chaplain was melted, and the objective claimed by the fire warriors.
The space marine last turn saw at first the dismay on our enemiesí faces. They shot and assaulted, the devil fish with a near by squad who managed to rip off the burst cannon and immobilise it all with glancing shots.
The game ended there, the result was seen we owned our objective they held nothing, minor victor to us! It was a really fun game and these guys went on to win the best general award. In hind sight the Kroot been left behind for count assault to protect our objective would have been best then we could of used both out fire warrior squads to claim there objective, but everything is easy in hind sight.
The second game was against Necrons and we saw the army and knew we could easy massacre it by forcing a phase out, or so we thought. The game was table quarters and 5 objectives.
There list was: night bringer; lord with orb, heavy destroyer, monolith, and 3 squads of 10 warriors. The ideas for us against this list where to ignore the slow night bringer and kill warriors until they phased.
We got deployment and first turn again. We deployed in our quarter and hid our commanders behind the devil fish the Kroot infiltrated into some woods near the Necron flank.
Our first turn nothing much happened tried shooting the heavy destroyer but its cover saved him, shot the monolith but a glancing shot which stunned it.
The Necrons advanced a little in there first turn but did nothing else.
Our second turn the Kroot jumped out ready to assault the Warriors on the furthest flank. We shot away with almost everything hitting into the warriors and knocked 8 down not too bad. One hammer head shot at the monolith again and destroyed it. The combat with the Kroot went well but only knocking down 4, the Necrons stayed to fight.
The Necron second turn and everything gets back up! Other wise again very little happened.
On our third turn the devil fish lined up for the fire warrior death run. Everything else concentrated on the warriors only knocking a few down. The heavy destroyed gets shot down by sniper drones. The Kroot then went and proved that even if they could get there last game it wouldnít of mattered as they lost in combat against the Necrons and ran off!
The Necron third turn saw again them doing nothing they took some shots at the devil fish but they shrugged them off.
Our 4th turn was going to be our killer turn the fire warrior death storm! The devil fish advanced turned and unloaded in perfect unison (I actually men this me and my mate moved and turn the devil fish at the exact same time), right in front of the 2 squads of warriors who had not engaged the Kroot. Everything other than the fire warriors and commanders opened up on the warriors to start, knocking a few down. Both commanders then went to finish off the remaining members of the warrior squad who killed the Kroot. Marker light meant that one of the fire warrior squads was hitting on 2ís, both squads rapid fired there little hearts out! When the mist cleared from a massed volley of shots, 2 Necron warriors failed there saves just 2! From about 18 wounds only 2 failed saves! We where shocked, our main hitter had just been shown what Necron armour was made of!
With only one Necron failing to pass his IBB role it was time for the Necrons to do something! The night bringer first shot down a hammer head. Then both units of warriors concentrated on one squad of fire warriors but unfortunately I didnít have the same luck with saves leaving the squad down the 3 men which then stud there ground.
Our finial turn realising that phase out was unlikely from the luck of the enemy we needed objectives the fire warriors on foot where claiming one but there warriors where claiming 2. With this in mind the 3 remaining fire warriors from the paper armour squad got back on the devil fish and ran back to another objective. Everything else fire away at the Necron warriors, and with there luck expended we managed with combined fire power from the entire army almost every Necron warrior was down!
The Necron last turn, time for them game important IBB roles. If they got 8 or less they phase out other wise with the current objectives a draw. The dice role and 10 warriors get up! Knowing the game would be a draw the Necron lord assaults into the fire warriors (which had stayed after the devil fish fire storm) for revenge and cuts them up.
The game ends and 2 objectives each itís a draw. Looking back on this game I canít believe how unlucky we where until the last turn they passed almost every save and IBB role. The Kroot couldnít win in combat and 2 squads of rapid firing fire warriors killed just 1 warrior. However there wasnít long to stand in shock as the finial game was getting ready to start.
Knowing after only drawing against the Necrons we had no chance of really coming in the top 3. We still wanted to try and get something worth substantial points under our belt.
Game 3 was annihilation with standard deployment, against an imperial guard army. There list had: 3 squads with grenade launchers and auto cannons; a Leman Russ battle tank; 3 chimeras with heavy stabbers hold vet squads with grenade launchers and missile launchers; Marbo; and a command squad with another named character who I cant remember (half his body was bionics).
We got deployment and first turn again (at least had luck here). First turn started with an infantry squad been blow to bits from a hammer head. The Leman Russ was stunned by the other hammer head. The Kroot advanced in there terrain which they infiltrated in.
The guard first turn saw little happen they advanced and got some shots off. The only substantial thing that happened was the Kroot got shot up quite a bit but they held there ground.
Our second turn and the Leman Russ and exploded by the hand of a hammer head and all the infantry quads are whipped out. The Kroot fail to get the charge against the Named bionic character.
The second turn by the guard was much better than the first. There Valarie entered the table and Marbo showed up. The Chimeras advanced and started shooting at the fire warriors on foot who where hiding in a building, as they had gone to ground the 3+ cover save ensured little losses where made. Marbo chucks his demo charge and blows up the hammer head that killed the Leman Russ. And the Valarie kills a single drone of a sniper drone team who then runes off.
Our third turn again like almost every turn in this game was import and action packed! The hammer head aims at the Valarie and misses. The sniper drones and near by commander annihilate Marbo. Shots are fired at the Chimera but they bounce harmlessly. The Kroot fail again to get the charge against the Named bionics character and his squad.
The guard players 3rd turn opened with the Valarie dropping his troops and taking a lascannon shot at the hammer head, but disruption fields save it (greater good I love disruption fields). The chimeras continue to shoot at the fire warriors but again only a few losses. The names bionics character shoots at the Kroot again but this turn also gets the charge in. the guard squad his reduced to a standard and the character but the Kroot are totally destroyed.
Tau 4th turn the hammer head shoots down the Valarie. The gun drones off a devil fish take some lucky shots at the squad who came out the Valarie and manage to pin them. The devil fish that dropped off his drones then shoots the flag bearer from the bionics character squad and my commander with his fusion gun instant kills the character. My friends commander missile pods and chimeras and backed up by sniper drones manages to shoot heavy bolters off 2 and immobilise one.
The guards 4th turn sees the devil fish who didnít lose his drones get shot down and then the squad inside get destroyed (ouch 2 kill points).
Our finial turn! More shots at the chimeras do nothing. My commander uses his air burst fragmentor to kill one of the Valarie squads and knock the second to two men, the drones tried the help but both missed (good old drones).
The guard finial turn, the chimeras and vet squads inside try and do something but fail. The 2 remaining survivors who came from the Valarie use a demo charge to instant kill my commander.
The game ends on turn 5 again and its 7 KPís for us and 6 for the guard. Another minor victory. This was a really fun game and could of easily been a massacre for us but the guard players did a good job at the end killing the devil fish and fire warriors inside and using that demo charge. Reflecting on this I really wish my team mate had moved his devil fish with the fire warriors inside, but we where so caught up in the rest of the game we just forgot about it!
The tournament was great fun! We even got to see our friends team army get massacred in existing last game which was really down to the wire besides the result! I would advise anyone who has not done a doubles to do one there great fun.
Great rep. What place you got at the turney then?
Praise be to the Emperor!!
We came 12th! out of 26! because it was 2 minor victories and a draw we just didn't get the points we deserved. If in the second game 2 more necron warriors had died thye would of phased and we would of come 4th over all! It was so frushtrating there luck, but thats the game .
twas the curse'ed lunch box the necron players wife was rolling in to everything she rolled was a 3 or greater 4 ill be backs and saves
ps i was his team mate
oh absolutly but when the difference between a draw and a massacre is 2 necron warriors its just annoying since we were doing really well from our first few turns dead destroyer and monolith with only afew kroot casulties i think
Doubles tournies are such a cool setup, I wish more stores ran them. It's fun to combo off different armies and the Force Organization sets up some fun lists. Nice report.

It is really fun me and Culexus had never really played together before, against each other an untold number of times but same side was new. Was good fun i woul advise anyone who can do a doubles to go, its not as hard core as normal tordements but its more fun.
