Good Knight Bugs! Grey Knights vs Stealershock Tyranids - Rematch vs Janthkin 1850

I had another game against Janthkin. In our first Grey Knights vs Tyranids matchup, Kevin's nids gave my grey knights a good whupping. As a matter of fact, he thumped me so hard that my knights ran crying back to the Ordo, but now they're back and with reinforcements. Little did I know, however, that while my knights were gone, Kevin was cultivating his own little genestealer farm with the local inhabitants. When my knights arrived, BAM! They weren't facing the same splinter fleet as before. Instead, they were up against a full-blown genestealer cult.

This is sort of a rematch, only we didn't use the same armies as before. We were both trying out something different and something new. Janthkin was getting ready for the Bay Area Open (on July 30-31, I believe there are still spots available). He was trying out a new (well, not so new) tyranid build - stealershock! I, too, was trying out something new. This is not my standard list. It is actually a list requested by a fellow online friend (with just a slight modification). His list was originally 2K, so I had to trim it down slightly to get to 1850. I also changed some of the wargear slightly as I wanted to be as WYSIWYG as possible and didn't have all the hammers that was originally on the list. Also, it is my first time using Stormravens. Because I don't have any, I proxied my stormravens with IG vendettas.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    My list:

    Grey Knights 1850

    Grandmaster - Incinerator, Rad Grenades
Librarian - Might of Titan, Quicksilver, Sanctuary, Shrouding, Warding Stave

    7x Purifier Squads - 2x Psycannons, 3x Halberds, 1x MC-Hammer, 1x Warding Stave
    7x Purifier Squads - 2x Psycannons, 3x Halberds, 1x MC-Hammer, 1x Warding Stave

5x Grey Knight Strike Squads - 1x Psycannon, Razorback w/Dozers + Psybolt Ammo
5x Grey Knight Strike Squads - 1x Psycannon, Razorback w/Dozers + Psybolt Ammo

    Stormraven - TL-Asscan, TL-Multi-melta
    Stormraven - TL-Asscan, TL-Multi-melta

    Dread - 2x TL-Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo
    Dread - 2x TL-Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo

After recalculating my list, I found that I was 18pts over! What happened was that originally in my list, my strike squads didn't have psycannons. Thus at that point, my list was legal at 1848. Then when pulling out my models, I instinctively pulled out my psycannon model for my strike squad as that is how I always run them normally. I didn't even realize this mistake until writing up the report and double-checking my points totals. Oops! Sorry, Janthkin.

    Tyranids 1850

Tervigon - Catalyst, not sure what else

    2x Hive Guards
    2x Hive Guards
    3x Zoanthropes

    14x Genestealers - Toxin Sacs
    15x Genestealers - Toxin Sacs
    15x Genestealers - Toxin Sacs
    15x Genestealers - Toxin Sacs
    16x Genestealers - Toxin Sacs

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    PRE-GAME ANALYSIS:

    Grey Knights:
I'm a little concerned about this new list. I've only got 24 guys total (+ 2 dreads). He's got triple that....and that's only the genestealers! While I do have Cleansing Flame, I don't have nearly enough anti-infantry fire to deal with all those stealers. I've only got 1 template from my Grandmaster and 8 small blast mindstrike missiles (though they are only 1-shot each). Honestly, I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with all those stealers. My stormravens can't even tankshock them to contest objectives! I need to play a very, very smart game if I'm going to survive at all.

I think he's definitely got the advantage in objectives-based games, both Seize Ground and Capture and Control. His troops far outnumber mine and he can reach almost anywhere on the board thanks to infiltrating/outflanking stealers. In C&C, all he needs do is to spread out 1 troop unit on his objective and my stormraven won't be able to contest. In annihilation, it's about even. We both have about the same amount of kill points.

I think Dawn of War and Spearhead helps me a little. I can't do anything about his genestealers, but the further away his synapse/shadows is (i.e. his tervigon and zoans), the better. With my stormravens, I should be able to out-maneuver him and stay out of his shooting range. Even if I am in range, big deal. He's going to have to get through my 3+ shrouding flat-out cover.

My great equalizer in assault will be Sanctuary. It should kill 2-3 genestealers on each assault (assuming they are still full strength). More importantly, it will let me strike first. If that is not enough to slow down the genestealer onslaught, then my knights are as good as dead.

    Tyranids:
Are you kidding me? 75 poisoned stealers!!! Talk about intimidation. My knights have got their hands full. Janthkin had to borrow about 40 of my genestealers for this army. If I had known about his plans, I'd have probably made up some excuse and told him that my stealers are out on vacation or something. Alas, I might have dug my own grave here. Oh well, there's nothing like a good beating before dinner.

The only thing tyranids really need to watch out for is Sanctuary combined with Cleansing Flame. That spells trouble for his genes. Since he is limited on Shadows units, I may actually be able to get some of my psychic powers off unlike my last game against him. His first priority though would be to take out my stormravens. Without my mobility, he's basically got an easy game against me.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Mission: Seize Ground - 4 Objectives

    Deployment: Dawn of War

Initiative: Grey Knights, but I force tyranids to go first.

    Map of the board.

Yeah, I was underprepared to face 75 poisoned genestealers. Oh well, I had to improvise.

    Deployment:

    Map of the board.

    2 objectives here.

The other 2 objectives are here.

Tyranids deploy nothing on the board. 2 units of genestealers (the 14 and 16 lots) will be infiltrating. 1 squad will be outflanking.

Before deployment, my Grandmaster uses his Grand Strategy to make both purifiers scoring. I then deploy 1 unit of strike squad in area terrain.

My opponent then infiltrates his genes 18"+ away from my strike squad.

I don't bother to steal the initiative and we begin.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tyranids 1

Everything (except the outflanking genes) walk in from his board edge. His 2 infiltrating genes advance. The right squad (with 14 genes) has half its genestealers in area terrain for cover. His tervigon then casts FNP on his left squad (with 16).

    Tyranids run.

    Grey Knights 1

Both stormravens move at cruising and drop off its contents. 1 razorback move 12" and offload my other strike squad.

I've just started and I've already made a major mistake. I should've had my librarian squad disembark from the left stormraven instead of the right. Right now, my leftmost strike squad and razorback would be out of Sanctuary range.

Shooting phase. My guys are about 12"-15" away form his genestealers and then I fail 4 night-fight tests, rolling 1,1's twice. Both strike squads, 1 squad of purifiers and the razorback don't see the genes. So I fire both stormravens, dreads and 1 unit of purifiers at his genes. I kill 4 from the right squad and a couple from the left squad. That is all that my shooting does.

    Tyranids 2

His outflanking genestealers come in and on the right board edge. They then run. Uh oh.

The rest of his genes advance. Again, his tervigon FNP's the larger, left unit. Tervigon spawns 9 termagants.

The rest of his army advances and runs. 1 unit of hive guards try to fire at my stormraven but is out of range.

Assault. My librarian casts Sanctuary and 4 genes from his left unit dies to dangerous terrain.

The right stealers lose 2 to DT as well. Well that's 102pts worth of stealers lost due to a 5pt psychic power. Not bad at all.

Both unit of stealers make it into assault.

Outflanking genes multi-charge my strike squad and razorback. Luckily for them, because of my mistake, they are out of Sanctuary range. Only 3 genes attack my knights. The rest attack the razorback. I actually kill 1 gene but don't lose any knights. In turn, the stealers are only about to shake my razorback once so we tie combat.

In the middle combat, I kill 2 genestealers and he kills 2 strike knights for another tied combat. However, with my purifier unit, I cast Cleansing Flame and Hammerhand and wipe out his stealers without losing any of my guys. They then consolidate forwards.

    Grey Knights 2

GK movement. My purifiers advance. All vehicles move at combat speed.

My stormravens fire mindstrike missiles at his tervigon and use PotMS to fire at his nearest genes. I wipe out his tervigon, who in turn takes out some of his nearby termagants in the ensuing psychic explosion.

I whittle down another genestealer unit with PotMS assault cannons from my stormravens, both units of purifiers and 1 dread.

One of my dreads charge his blue stealers to help lock them up in combat.

His blue genes wipe out all but 1 knight, who fail morale and break. I believe I only killed 1 stealer. In the other assault, his genestealers kill 1 knight and I kill 1 stealer.

    Tyranids 3

Tyranid movement. Genestealers come after my librarian's unit.

The rest of his army advances.

Tyranid shooting. I believe it was his termagants who shot down 1 purifier (with psycannon).

His zoanthropes also try to fire but because of Improved Aegis from my dread, 2 of them failed their LD6 psychic tests. The other one just misses (or maybe he got hooded, not sure). Anyways, they don't do anything.

Finally, his hive guards shoot down 1 stormraven.

Genestealers then assault. While trying to cast Hammerhand, my purifier sergeant perils! I then roll a '1' for his 2++ warding stave save!! Doh!!! At least my librarian successfully casts Hammerhand.

His stealers kill my other psycannon knight. In turn, I wipe them out and consolidate.

In the stealer-strike assault, his genes wipe out my strike squad.

Finally, the dread continues to lock up his blue genestealers.

    Grey Knights 3

Luckily, my strike squad only falls back 3". Unfortunately, he's still within 6" of the stealers. Grandmaster's unit get ready to wipe out his 5 stealers unit and razorbacks move at cruising. I make sure to "touch" my top razorback to terrain (so that I get cover from his hive guards).

    Stormraven moves flat-out.

In shooting, my GM's unit wipes out his genestealers.

I also kill 1 hive guard with shooting. Because he is out of synapse, he falls back (after failing morale). Damn. Now I can't multi-assault.

I also insta-kill one of his zoans with my dread.

In assault, his genes tear off one of my dread's arms.

    Tyranids 4

Tyranid movement. Zoans move back to give synapse coverage to the hive guard that was falling back. It then automatically regroups.

His zoans then fire warp blasts at my librarian's unit. Because I am outside of my dread's Reinforced Aegis, his zoans are testing on LD9 instead of LD6 instead. My librarian casts Shrouding for a 3+ cover from his warp blast. I lose my hammer purifier and my librarian takes 1W.

His hive guards fire at my stormraven but I make my 3+ shrouded flat-out covers.

In assault, his genestealers rip off my dread's other arm and immobilise it as well, but they remain locked.

    Grey Knights 4

Overview of the beginning of Grey Knights Turn 4.

Stormraven moves flat-out once again. Both purifiers advance, as does 1 razorback.

My stormraven uses PotMS to fire at his lone hive guard and only put 1W on it. My purifiers fire at his zoans but fail to do any damage.

In assault, my other dread charges his blue genes. His genes then blow up my damaged dread and lose a couple in the explosion. They remain locked with the new dread.

My librarian's unit multi-charges his zoans and hive guards. While trying to cast Hammerhand, my librarian perils and again, I roll a '1' for his 2++ warding stave save.  He dies, but I also kill 1 hive guard for a tied combat.

    Tyranids 5

Tyranid movement. His genes spread out on 2 objectives so that my stormraven cannot contest.

His termagants then go to screen out my GM's unit.

In combat, I believe I cast Cleansing Flame (on 3D6) but he makes his saves. My purifiers then fail to do any damage and he kills off 1 purifier.

Genestealers continue to struggle against my dread.

    Grey Knights 5

Stormraven moves flat-out. I am unable to contest (or so I think). Razorback zooms 12" but is still 1 turn away from contesting.

My purifiers split off from my Grandmaster and embarks onto the razorback to claim an objective (the turtle objective on the hill).

My stormraven fires its asscan and kills a couple of stealers.

In assault, I am slowly losing the battle.

Finally, my Grandmaster incinerates and then assaults the termagants, wiping them out and then consolidating towards the tyranid objective.

End of turn 5. (Actually, this photo was taken prematurely before my GM assaulted the termagants). Right now, I've only got 1 objective (the turtle) while nids have 2. I need for the game to continue or I lose.

We roll to see if the game continues and....

    To be concluded....

I'm quite sure damage to vehicals doesn't count to combat reserlution so you would win this one 1-0 (i learnt this when i multi charged an elder walker + some elder troops)

Also. I thought 1 unit could only claim 1 objective??? he has 1 gene unit holding 2 objectives!

Regarding the first part, you are partially right. Only damage to walkers count towards combat res. Damage to non-walker vehicles do not, so yeah, I should have won that combat 1-0. I will let my opponent know.

However, damage to an eldar walker should have counted towards combat res.

As for the 2nd question, a unit can definitely claim more than 1 objective. That has also been confirmed by the latest BRB FAQ (version 1.3).

    Tyranids 6
    ....the game continues!

Lone hive guard goes to screen out my GKGM.

Genestealers go to multi-assault both my razorback and stormraven. Needing 6's to hit, they fail to do any damage to either.

However, his blue genes wreck the dread that they were fighting. They are now claiming my objective as well as their 2 own objectives.

    Grey Knights 6
    Time for some contesting!

But first of all, my purifiers disembark from the razorback and move 6" up the hill to claim an objective.

My razorback then tank shocks 12" to contest my own objective.

Razorback tank shocks to contest the tyranid objective. My stormraven moves flat-out to contest the other tyranid objective.

My GKGM moves around his hive guard. He then assaults it, successfully casting Hammerhand. Needing only 4's to wound the T6 hive guard (thanks to Rad grenades and Hammerhand), my GKGM kills off his hive guard and consolidates towards the tyranid objective. He may be in contesting range.

Finally, my last purifier dies in assault against his hive guard and zoans.

We roll to see if the game continues and it doesn't.

I've got my own objective firmly in hand.

Now 1 razorback is contesting my own objective.

    Another is contesting his objective.

Finally, my stormraven is contesting the last tyranid objective. I've got 1-0 objectives.

With that, I declare this game a....

    Draw (No Contest)!!!

Why, you may ask? For 2 reasons:

    1. My list was 18pts over.

    2. On my turn 5, I embarked a 7-man purifier unit into my razorback (oops!).

Janthkin, we're going to have to do this again in the future. Thanks for reading guys (and gals).
