well, usually i don't bother to do batreps, but today had a fun incident during 40k with a friend (after crushing his team in blood bowl) and decided to take some pics with my phone to document and post online (mostly due to belial's performance). most of this is on the recollection without notes.
Deathwing (my force)
Belial w/ thunderhammer and stormshield (1 squad upgraded w/ standard and apothecary)
2x Venerable Dreadnought w/ plasma cannon, dccw+storm bolter, extra armor
4x Deathwing Terminator Squad w/ 5x thunderhammer and stormshields, 1x cyclone launcher
2x Land Speeder w/ multi-melta, typhoon launcher
1x Vindicator w/ extra armor
2x Predator w/ autocannon turret, lascannon sponsons
Sisters of Battle (friend's force, didn't look at his list, so this is from what i can remember being used on me; haven't looked at their dex in the WD yet)
canoness w/ combi-flamer...
2x 10xSoB w/ 2 heavy bolters, rhino
2x 10xSoB w/ 2 storm bolters, rhino
2x 5xelite SoB w/ 2 flamers, superior w/ combi-flamer and meltabombs, mounted in immolator (cant remember proper name of unit)
10x seraphim w/ 2 twin-flamers
10xretributors w/ 4x heavy bolters, dialogus(sp?)
5xretributors? w/ 3x multimeltas, dialogus, mounted in rhino (w/ canoness)
the battle as a whole was him castling on an objective while i manuevered towards him behind LoS-blocking terrain or sat at long range (36-48" on the other 2 objectives) firing at his rhinos to kill any mobility he has from leaving the corner.
at one point we're on either side of a cliff next to his castle, as he draws near to push for the objective in the center, belial Deep Strikes in he took major attention, basically tying up the majority of the SoB army for the rest of the game on the side of the table next to his castle.
Belial immobilizes a rhino next to the cliff and then explodes it with a charge. the following turn both immolators end up outflanking to that side, his forces proceed to envelope belial and fire everyhing they have at him - 2 regular th/ss terminators and standard bearer die, the other 3 then go on to make around 40-50 saves(only 2-3 FnP's). the exorists still shooting at rest of my army. the seraphim follow up by charging, locked in combat until breaking them at end of my next turn.
a dreadnought (missing a plasma cannon) arrives to support belial, charges in and loses it's dccw to a meltabomb, gets locked in combat until his turn where he runs down the fleeing sisters. belial was locked in combat during my turn but the seraphim break in time to get shot in his next turn, belial follows them to stay within 6".
the autolas pred and typhoons in my backfield destroy an immolator and take out the gun on the other. the dreadnought (without weapons) charges the sisters from the 1st exploded rhino and remains tied with them for rest of the game. belial's unit charges the 10x sob in front of them along with 1 engaging the 5 elite sob as well. no casualties suffered, while belial and co kill 6 of them, they both flee and belial follows up, catching up to the still broken seraphim as well.
sorry about the blurriness, phone battery was low (forgot to charge it last night) and didn't review photo after taking it.
turn 5 (ended up being the last turn), everything (including the exorists finally) turns and shoots at belial's squad, belial survives alone with 1 wound left. the seraphim continue to fall back off the table, while the broken sob squad fails 3 faith tests before regrouping next to belial. in the background, the other advancing terminator squad (and dreadnought also missing both arms) finally reach the castle, tying up the retributors (having killed the multimelta retributors earlier and forcing the canoness to retreat to join sob on his objective) while the other dread and belial both charge the sob on the objective tying them up and contesting his objective in the end.
aftermath: the game ended as a 2-0 win, damage sustained being roughly 10 terminators from 3 squads and the arms off of both dreadnoughts. all but 1 of his rhinos and 1 immolator were wrecked, didn't shoot at the exorcists during the game (was focusing on killing his scoring mobility). was a fun game, but in hindsight, i played a little too safe with the rest of my army trying to stay outside range/line-of-sight when i should have pushed right away at the same time as belial to present more threats, though ungodly amount of armor saves made by belial remedied this, which frustrated him to no end that his whole army couldn't kill belial's squad over the length of the game.
Sounds like an interesting game. Love how Belial ended on 1 wound... WILL NOT.... DIE!!!!!!
Now I really have to finish my imperial fists scheme deathwing army... just to play like this. epic

Excellent battle, that would teach the sisters not to meddle in the affairs of the sons of the Lion!
Certs since you have the Experience, how do you feel the new sister dex fares against the Deathwing?
Praise be to the Emperor!!
well going off the perspective of my SoB friend, who believes that overall it's not a bad update, but that it's not as strong as it used to be (mainly due to things like rending flamers being gone... and he had a lot of flamers hitting me). while my initial expectation of SoB was the previous strong at short range, weak in long range and melee.
but things like rending heavy bolters in the retributors, re-roll to hit or wound on either the dominions (i think) or seraphim, and the amount of flamers he had, made me take armor saves like crazy (around 40-60 armor saves per turn of shooting), which is usually fairly effective at whittling down terminators.
they lacked long ranged, so starting out my army was fairly safe due to only the exorcist being able to reach me, and despite their perfect stats for killing terminators, they had to focus on trying to get my vehicles due to his only other real anti-tank were a unit that could take 3 multimeltas in a rhino and use a relentless faith to fire after pushing forward 12" and dismounting.
basically, the tactic i used to counter this... and well, to counter most shooty armies is to use terrain in the middle to gather behind and wait for them to get close enough for me to round the terrain and only usually have to endure 1-2 turns of shooting before reaching the safety of combat. otherwise, an en masse attack to provide numbers to counter casualties i'd take.
against deathwing specifically, i'd say sisters aren't very strong due to a lack of ap2 ranged weaponry and guardsmen stats in melee, but they're a tough opponent if they can maximise that amount of heavy rapid fire that they get. just unfortunately for my opponent, i made an inordinate amount of armor saves despite being available for rapid fire in almost each of his shooting phases.
So no more rapid-firing bolter death? It got replaced by a ton of rending heavy bolter death?Interesting...
Praise be to the Emperor!!
well, i wouldn't say it was replaced. the vast majority of wounds he stuck on me were from bolter fire (and flamers). and i think SoB's still mainly reliant on rapid firing bolters as their mainstay power, due to battle sisters being their only troop choice, so roughly 3-5 of those running around.
the heavy bolter retributors still have to compete against the exorcists for heavy support slots, and i think most people would at most do like my opponent and go 2 exorcists and 1 retributor, if not still 3 exorcists, due to their ability to move 6" and still fire while taking cover behind rhinos and still have los them, while the retributors are static. their damage capabilities for being the same point cost are comparable, retributors being slightly better vs infantry while exorcists are slightly better vs vehicles, but then exorcists have better range, while retributors have to be static to fire.
against my deathwing/mech support list, i also think the outflanking dominions would have been more effective w/ meltaguns and multimelta immolators; where if his outflank rolls permitted, they could have assaulted my support tanks in the backfield (the turn before they came in i had even turned one predator to face the table side and popped smoke while the vindi took cover behind it). the flamers put a number of hits on me but the fewer shots that would have forced the 3++ without FnP would have been better i think. (esp. when combined with d6*x s8 ap1 shots from exorcists)
then again shrug, i haven't really read up on them (just what was on some forums since last night) so i'm sure others would know better. just did my usual
Belial can do some crazy things, even when you do not expect him to. I played a 500 pt. game with my friend (a Tau player), annihilation, Belial was the only one left, one wound, I won. It was crazy.
