Because the battle took place in a jungle, we used the lustrian encounter rules from fantasy.
Terrain was set with a size 2 building blocking LOS in the middle of the board and size 3 bushes blocking LOS from the 10, 2, 5 and 7 oclock positions (each about 15 inches from the edge of the building) , the center of the clock being the center of the board. Size 1 bushes scattered throughout the board, none blocking enough LOS to matter but there for encounter purposes.
2 marine squads took up the left side of the board with the master on a bike leading them. Preds set up in the middle, each covering the alley between the 2 bushes at the top and the center building. 3rd marine squad set up to the left of the TL-Lascannon pred, which was covering the left alley. Assult squad set up behind that Tact. squad. Devastators set up inside the bush at the 2 o'clock position to help the autocannon pred cover the alley. rhino set up in the alley to the right but not blocking LOS for the pred.
Hive tyrant set up directly opposite the Dev squad. Fex set up directly opposite the autocannon pred. A stealer brood set up opposite the 2 tact squads on the let side. The second stealer brood and the warrior brood set up opposite the assult squad with the warriors in front of the stealers. Raveners behind the warriors. Thropes set up to the right of the stealers with LOS on the TL-Lascannon Pred. Lictors DS and Broodlord infiltrated with his retinue directly behind the 10-o'clock bush.
Pre-Game movement: Stealers Scuttled up 6 inches.
The Dice gods favored the Space marines and they took first turn:
Turn 1: Marines:
The 2 tact squads on the left side moved up to take shots at the broodlord and his retinue. Master on a bike moved up to do the same thing. Assault marines move up followed by the 3rd tactical squad. Rhino moved up the alley and stopped short of 12 as not to block LOS for the dev squad.
Aware of the possibilities of strange attacks from the forests, the tyranids are cautious near the cover. However, although there were some small stirrings, nothing happened (Dice wise, he rolled 2 All Is Wells).
Having sighted the broodlord and his retinue, the ultramaries let loose their bolters at rapidfire range. However, due to the large bush, only half of the first marine squad can see the broodlord and his retinue. The second squad was out of range for rapidfire (oops). Out of the 10 boltershots coming at the broodlord, Only 3 managed to wound, 2 of which were saved. Master on a Bike fires into the squad and misses. Lascannon Pred fires on the Fex, only one shot hits which wounds. Second pred and devastator squad fires on the Tyrant. The Pred misses ALL of it's hits whereas the lascannon from the Dev squad manages to punch through the tyrant's warp field and put a large hole in its wing.
Turn 1 'Nids:
Now througly pissed off at the marines for getting first turn and wounding 2 MCs, the tyranids advance. Broodlord and his retinue moves towards the master, intent on ending his miserable life at the end of the turn. Everything else moves up the full movement range with the tyrant taking shelter behind a forest that blocks LOS from the Pred.
Suddenly, a carnivorous plant appears and devours a marine (the jetpack must be hard to the plant to swallow)
Genestealers on the left take this chance to fleet 5 inches towards the marines. The second brood also does the same, achieving 3 inches. Raveners fleet for 4. Zoanthropes open up on the Lascannon Pred, stunning it. The fex fires at the second pred, however, due to bad aim, it misses and instead of hitting the tank, hits the building leaving a large mess of spikes on the wall. Warriors take aim at the master on the bike. Both Deathspitters miss but the venom cannon hits and manages to pierce the heavy armor of the master, taking him down to 2 wounds.
The broodlord closes with the master and the left brood of genestealers manages to reach the first tactical squad.
The broodlord strikes first and with one swipe of his mighty claws, dismembers the master on the bike (2 rending hits and the master failed his invulns). The retinue, having lost almost no time in killing the master, massacre moves 5 inches into the tactical squad. The genestealers that charged bring down 6 marines with their attacks while losing 2 to the sergeant in the process. The sergeant rallies his squad and combat continues.
Turn 2 Marines:
Their left flank now engaged by the tryanids, the ultramarines pull back with the assault squad, who in their current position will be charged next turn. The Rhino moves and stops besides the hive tyrant. Dred does not come in.
As the marines watch fearfully as the Carnifex lumbers towards them, it suddenly disappears into the earth. Also, in the distance, a zoanthrope is seen falling. It never gets back up. (Marine player rolled quicksand for the encounter by the carnifex. For those of you that don’t know what this is, any model hit by quicksand takes an armor save. If it MAKES the save, it is removed automatically regardless of wounds, saves, bionics, etc… Zoanthrope died to 4 str 3 ap 1 attacks from snakes).
Heartened by the disappearance of the Carnifex, the devastator squad opens up on the tyrant, inflicting another wound. The master in the rhino disembarks and along with his retinue, fires into the hive tyrant. Their shots are all absorbed into the warp field of the tyrant. The second predator, now lacking LOS to the tyrant, instead turns it’s firepower towards the warriors. Only the lascannon hits and wounds. The warrior, although seriously wounded, is driven forwards by the Hive Mind and staggers towards the ultramarines. The tactical squad in the middle, having stood still, rapidfires into the warriors, bringing 1 down and wounding another.
The second tact squad on the left now charges into the stealers in an attempt to help the first squad.
The left flank of the ultramarines is further devastated by the broodlord, his retinue and the group of genestealers. The stealers turn to face the new charging marines and kill 5 before the marines even get to strike. The broodlord brings down 2 by himself and this retinue kills 3. The marines, after sustaining heavy losses, strike back at the Tyranids and bring down 6 genestealers. The marines, disheartened by such losses, attempts to run but the Tyranids were too quick and the combat continues.
Turn 2 Tyranids:
The center column moves forwards, now weary of dangers in the cover. Hive tyrant moves towards the second master as to put him out of his misery. The first of the lectors show up in the bush near the tactical squad.
Stealers fleet again for 3 inches. Zoanthrope tries again to destroy the tank but misses with this warp blast. Warriors open fire on the tactical squad but inflict no casualties. Raveners use their spinefists and fire into the tactical squad again, killing 1 marine.
Raveners, lictor and stealers charge the tactical squad, Tyrant charges the master.
The left flank of the marines is further decimated. At the end of the turn, only 1 veteran sergeant is left alive, who brings down another genestealer. Combat in the middle goes poorly for both sides since at the end of the combat, only 3 marines and 2 genestealers die. The tyrant, wounded and angered, unleashes his fury upon the command squad, killing 3 of its members. The master, determined to destroy the tyrant, wounds it twice. However, the second attack from the master bounces harmlessly off the tyrant’s warp field.
Turn 3 Marines:
Movement: Things are looking grim for the marines at this point. The assault squad moves into position to charge the lictor. Dread still does not come in.
The crew from the first pred has calmed down and fires into the zoanthrope, putting 3 lascannon holes through its head. The second predator opens fire into the warriors again, killing 1. Devastator squad has nothing to shoot at.
Assault squad into the lictor
The broodlord, overly confident in itself, misses the sergeant with all his attacks. However, his retinue manages to land 3 rending hits on the sergeant, who dies with his body parts scattered randomly. The broodlord and his retinue moves towards the center of the field, having completely destroyed the left flank of the marines. The combat in the middle goes as expected, with 4 assault marines dying to the stealers and the lictor before they strike. The raveners bring down another 4 marines from the tactical squad. The assault marines kill the lictor as well as a genestealer and the tactical squad adds a ravener to the killcount. The hive tyrant continues to battle the command squad, killing everyone but the master, who fails to wound the tyrant.
Turn 3 Tyranids:
Movement: The broodlord and retinue moves closer to the predator, but not yet in charging range. Warriors move up to charge the assault marines, second lictor does not make it again.
Charges: Warriors into the assault marines
Assault: Combat in the middle continues with both sides sustaining average losses. By the end, there is only 2 genestealers, 3 raveners and a warrior left whereas the marines only have 4 members of the tactical squad remaining. The hive tyrant plunges his talons deep into the master and then proceeds to rip him in two. However, being so seriously wounded, he only manages a 1 inch massacre move.
Turn 4 Marines:
With only 2 predators, 1 rhino and 1 dread and a devastator squad left the future for the marines looks bleak. Both predators turn around to fire at the broodlord. The crew of the rhino, eager to avenge their master, tank shocks the hive tyrant. The tyrant, too injured to try to move out of the way, instead tries to stop the rhino in its tracks. As the tank nears the tyrant, it raises one of its talons and brings it crashing down onto the rhino, damaging the driving mechanism and immobilizing it.
Both preds as well as the dev squad opens up on the broodlord, killing all but 2 of his retinue.
The tyranids in the middle finally kill the last members of the tactical squad.
Turn 4 Tyranids:
The Wounded hive tyrant seeks revenge against the devastator squad and flies towards them. The warriors, stealers and raveners move to attack the back armor of the preds. The broodlord moves to engage the preds.
The venom Cannon from the warriors hits the back armor of the pred and blows off the twin linked lascannon.
Charges: Raveners charge the first autocannon pred and the broodlord as well as the remainder of the second brood in the center charges the other pred. Tyrant charges the dev squad.
Broodlord manages to penetrate the pred once and destroy it. Raveners penetrate the second pred once and also destroys it. Tyrant kills 4 members of the dev squad and sustains no casualties.
Turn 5 Marines:
The dreadnought finally arrives in his drop pod near the tyrant. However, as he sees the carnage around him, his mind wanders and he trips on a large rock upon landing, immobilizing him (failed dangerous terrain roll).
Shooting: dread pops a warrior
Assault: Tyrant kills the rest of the dev squad and moves towards the dread.
Turn 5 Nids:
Movement: tyrant moves towards the dread.
Charges: tyrant charges the dread:
Assault: Tyrant pens the dread twice and destroys it.
The Tyranids, although disadvantaged from the beginning, left the field battered, but victorious.

Good job, i like when Space marines get pwned.
he should have had an easy game... he foolish enough not to field nid hunters... but anyway... good job
Silly Ultra Smurfs, they never have a plan, I presume you had extended carapace on the Genestealers?
Good win, the Broodlord and genestealers really paid off.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
One thing I'd like to point out - the hive tyrant doesn't get a 2+ save with the winged biomorph. Extended Carapace is not allowed with winged creatures.
If he has the Warp Field psychic power, then he can get the 2+ save.
"They say the Darkness consumes you. They don't say what happens after It's done."
Ah, true. My bad.
why in the world did your opponent not take tyranid hunters?
Most likely because he didn't tailor his list to go against tyranids, we were both using pre-written lists and it's kinda cheesy to say:
"Oh, you're playing nids? I'll just take this out an put this in then..."
Dreams give us a vision of a world unlike any we have seen. They present us with a glimpse of a better life; a goal to aspire to, and in the face of insurmountable odds, they provide us with the power to overcome, to live on, and to succeed where we would have otherwise failed.
yeah, but thats what they were made for right?
