I have collected both armies (knowing it would be the best way to draw my friends into the game). Neither of us had ever actually played before. The Ultramarines can field 2000 pts before war gear and my Dark Eldar can manage 1070 before gear. This was a 1000 pt Cleanse mission on a 4x6 table with a fair bit of terrain.
1Haemonculus w. scissor hands and distructor (shadow field) + 4 Grotesques
10 DE Troops including 2 Cannon
15 DE Troops including 2 Cannon, 1 Blaster, 1 Shredder + Sybarite with Agonizer
5 Scourges (2 DL, 2 Cannon, 1 splinter rifle)
15 Wytches including 2 Shredders, wytch weapons + Succubus w Agonizer
Chaplain with Crozius, Rosarius and jumpack leading 4 man Assault squad + vet sgt (6 figures total)
10 man Devestartor squad: Las Cannon, ML, 2x H. Bolter
5 Scouts: 2 sniper, 1 H. Bolder
Predator Annihilator with linked Las Cannon and sponson Las Connons
Dreadnaught with Assault Cannon
Razorback w Las Connon and linked Plasma guns carrying 6 man squad w ML
The space marines depolyed thier Armor 6" from the middle of the table (where the hills were), the scouts in the woods behind the armor (just SW of middle), the Chaplain lead assault squad on the West board edge in some ruins and the Devestators on the S board edge near a fire lane.
The DE deployed in a tight mass 12" from the center of the table (hidden by hills) except for the Scourges who were furhter back but commanded a fire lane that split the SM forces.
Turn 1 DE
The mass moved 6" towards the middle staying out of los with the HQ and Talos out in fromt.
Turn 1 SM
The Razorback and Dreadnaught moved up to the middle hils, still behind cover. the Annihilator remained in the cover of the ruins with the Assault squad incase the DE charged. And the Devestaor squad moved into a fire lane East of middle.
Turn 2 DE
Everything moved 6" en masse (mostly out of los behind the hills in the centre), spreading out slightly preparing to charge seperate objectives. The Talos spewed on the scouts in the woods inflicting 2 casualties.
Turn 2 SM
The Razorback moved into a fire lane and disgourged it's 6 man squad. The Dreadnaught moved to support the Razorback in case the DE charged. The Annihilator fired at the lead DE Element (the HQ) and killed 2 groteques. The Devestator fired into the DE East Flank (15 man squad) inflicting heavy loses (5) with a single Frag Missile.
Turn 3 DE
The DE split its forces. The HQ down the centre fire lane, charging the Dreadnaught (or possibly the scouts or Annihilator, which were further back). The DE East Flank advanced towards the Razorback, immobilizing it with Blaster fire. The Scourges failed to penetrate the Annihilator's armor and the DE West Flank (10 man squad) charged over the hill with the Wytche Horde right behind them.
Turn 3 SM
The 6 man squad from the Razorback move SE to the top of a hill and unload bolter fire into the approaching DE East Flank, missing completely. The Chaplain led the assault squad in a charge against the DE West Flank. After a huge number of dice rolls only 3 DE warriors fell but they also fled the field, retreating a good 9", behind the Wytche Horde. The Chaplain et all performed a sweeping advance intot he Wytches.
The Annihilator cut down the last two grotesques and the Dreadnaught, in it's arrogance, refrained from firing and assaulted the Haemonculus. This was foolish because the Shadowfiled saved the last HQ unit and the Dreadnaught was now in assault range of the Talos....
Turn 4 DE
The East Flank charged the 6 man squad using fleet of foot and each side suffered 2 casualties. The scourges missed the Annihilator, again. The Talos assaulted the Dreadnaught and everyone held thier breath...5 melee blows later the Dreadnaught was removed from play.
The Chaplains crack assault squad began thier sweeping advance/assault, suffering a casualty but inflicting 4. Those 4 deaths opened a way for the Succubus to make btb contact with the Ultramarine Leader.
Turn 4 SM
The Annihilator unloaded everything at the Talos, inflicting a wound. There was a brief debate about whether or not the lone Haemonculus could block los to the Talos from the Devestator squad, but visual logic won out and the squad unleashed it's fury on the Talos, to no effect. (Muahahaha ha! The scouts opened fire on the Haemonculus who was once again saved by it's shadowfield.
The Cahplain et co. suffered a heavy loss of 3 while only managing to inflict a single casualty. And the 6 man squad from the Razorback killed 1 of the East Flank but lost another 2 men and was forced to fall back (towards the Devestators).
Turn 5 DE
The now unengaged East Flank charges the Devestators (instead of the 2 remaining 6man squad) using fleet of foot and barely makes 1 unit into btb contact, but likely saving the Talos from destruction. The Talos moves 6" towards the Annihilator. And the Scourges finally score a hit, Stunning the crew of the Annihilator, and probably saving the Talos. THe Mob of Wythes (no longer a horde) managed a drawn combat with no casualties on wither side. The no consolodated West Flank squad moved and fleet of footed towards the far distant Devestator squad (but remained in cover behind the hills in the middle).
Turn 5 SM
The ^man squad (now 2 man) regroupded and assaulted the DE East Flank (already in hth with the Devestators). The combined might of the Devestators and 2man squad decimated the East Flank leaving no survivors and suffering no casualties. The scouts failed to wound the DE HQ who in turn failed to wound them. The Chaplain and Vet Sgt managed to kill 3 Wytches but was overwhelmed and died in service to the Emperor.
Going into turn 6:
SM retained a mint 10 man Devestator crew, a depleted squad of 2 marines, an immobilized Razorback not in los of anything, an Annihilator and 3 scouts.
The DE had it's HQ Haemonculus, Scourges, Talos, a squad of 8 Wytches (and Succubus) and a 1/2 depleted West Flank (6 models, 2 w Cannon).
Turn 6 DE
True to form, the Scourges failed to damage the Annihilator. The Talos lobbed shots at the 2man squad and the Devestators, to no effect, and feebly assaulted the Annihilator (no damage). The haemonculus was unable to kill any scouts and the West Flank and the Wytches advanced under cover of the hills towards the Devestators.
Turn 6 SM
The Annihilator backed out of HTH with the Talos and opened fire with it's Main Linked-Las Cannon, wounding the DE Death Machine. The Scouts finally caused the Shadowfield to fail and inflicted a wound on the Haemonculus. The Devestators and 2 man squad moved into a fire lane to prepare for the incoming West Flank and Wytches.
The game was called in favour of opening presents with the wives and imbibing holiday cheer. Victory points were totalled and the winner was declared.
SM losses = 432 points
DE losses = 325 points
A decent victory for the spawn of Commorragh. Although using the Capture Prisoners Rule from the codex would have made it more decisive.
War Record Since Sept 2005
Old Codex 48-20-9 Dark Eldar
New Codex 1-0-0 Dark Eldar
