Firstly, this is my first battle report and my first large game. We're both new to the game and still learning the rules. I unfortunately did not take any notes or pictures so this probably contains errors since I'm going off memory. Enjoy!
Recipient: Regimental Commander, General Kessler
Date: May 24, 2006
Subject: Training Exercise; Ophelia System; Ophelia 7
Orders: The 81st Ophelian Grenadiers are to proceed to Ophelia 7 to conduct combat training exercises against elements of the Dark Angels Space Marine Chapter. Live munitions are not to be expended.
The Emperors will is Unquestionable
The only cover on the open plains of Ophelia 7 was the remains of an old civilian building. First Squad, First Platoon and Major Hoth’s command squad took up positions in what remained of the building.
Second and Third Squads, First Platoon formed guns lines to the left flank of the ruined building.
1st Grenadiers and the armored elements consisting of a Leman Russ and a Sentinel formed the right flank with the intention of performing a sweep attack should the opportunity permit. The artillery detachment of one basilisk was assigned to the operation and deployed roughly behind the ruined building but unfortunately in sight of enemy forces.
Enemy forces were arrayed in a rough line with a devastator and tactical squad forming the right flank, terminator command forming the center, and a final tactical squad and dreadnaught on the left flank.
Dark Angels Turn 1
The honor fell to the Dark Angels to begin the operation. All units went into action at 0700 and began moving forward except the devastator squad and dreadnaught. The devastator squad opened fire with missile launchers on Second Squad, First Platoon on the left flank killing two men. The dreadnaught fired upon the Leman Russ knocking off its tracks and immobilizing it.
Imperial Guard Turn 1
Major Hoth got his men into action shortly after the Dark Angels kicked off the operation. All units stayed in position except 1st Grenadiers, which moved forward with the intention of taking up positions to slow down the advance of the opposing Dark Angels Tactical Squad.
The Basilisk began firing at the Marine Devastator Squad vaporizing 5 men (Shot on target) before they knew what hit them. Follow up shots from the lascannons of Second and Third Squads saw the Marines reduced to a singular man but he held firm to his ground.
The Leman Russ and Sentinel (Lascannon) with, orders from Major Hoth, opened up on the imposing dreadnaught. The first shot from the Russ’ main battle cannon penetrated causing it to become immobilized and shaken. The sentinel missed the mark but a follow up shot from First Squad’s lascannon saw the mighty dreadnaught exploded into a fireball.
Dark Angels Turn 2
The Dark Angels commander ordered his men forward. The HQ squad took up a position behind a large hill out of view of the guard. The right and left flank tactical squads pressed forward but were not in range to fire. The sole remaining member of the devastator squad let fly a missile at the basilisk that glanced off its armor immobilizing and shaking it’s crew. He’s one stubborn marine!
Imperial Guard Turn 2
Major Hoth ordered the elite Hardened Veterans Squad to drop from the sky behind the terminator command unit. They didn’t land on spot but were coherent and in range with their meltas. Lt. Graul was ordered to move his command unit slightly to the right to be in a position to fire his plasma gun in the future.
The Leman Russ fired the battle cannon at the advancing tactical squad but saw the shot scatter long behind the group. However First Squad and the Sentinel saw lascannon fire kill two marines.
Second and Third Squads lascannons tried to target the remaining devastator marine but were instead ordered to fire on the advancing tactical squad. They killed two marines.
The Hardened Vets hit dirt and immediately opened fire on the command squad. The shotgun fire bounced off the terminator armor but the meltaguns destroyed two marines.
Dark Angels Turn 3
The two tactical squads again moved forward and opened fire on Second Squad and 1st Grenadiers. This resulted in one death to each unit.
The terminators opened fire and then assaulted the hardened vets killing them to the man but taking them further from the gun lines of the guard.
Imperial Guard Turn 3
Major Hoth ordered 1st Grenadiers forward and Lt. Graul moved closer to the front lines as well.
Second and Third Squads opened fire on the tactical squad on their flank but saw their weapons fire bounce harmlessly off the marine armor. The plasma gunners from these two squads found their marks however. The lascannons opened fire on the remnants of the devastator squad but missed. A gifted soldier in First Squad managed to down a marine from the tactical squad on the right flank with lasgun fire.
The Basilisk opened fire on the advancing tactical squad on the left flank but saw it’s ordinance wasted due to bad calculations by the gunner. The Leman Russ fired at the other tactical squad and even though the shot was not on target the blast caught a small group of the marines killing two men. The Sentinel and First squad’s lascannon opened fire but missed the mark. However, 1st Grenadiers and Lt. Graul’s plasma guns hit home removing 3 marines from combat.
Dark Angels Turn 4
The tactical squads continued their advance and opened fire. The terminator squad wheeled around and began to advance.
Second Squad took three more casualties but held their ground. 1st Grenadiers also took two casualties from a haul of bolter and melta fire. The devastator marine again fired at the basilisk but missed his mark.
Imperial Guard Turn 4
1st Grenadiers fell back to avoid an assault for as long as possible.
They then opened fire but didn’t inflict any damage. First Squads Plasma and Lascannons opened fire killing two more marines reducing the squad to two. All other fire at the squad failed to find its mark.
Second and Third Squads plasma and lascannons ended the threat from the tactical squad on their flank.
The Dark Angels commander conceded defeat and all forces withdrew from the field.
Sounds like it was a well vote battle that found fortune smiling on the Guard.
The spot on LR shot and the Spot on basi shot are huge to getting a guard win.
But its a good win none the less.
Well done on your win. Just use more cover next game, as it always makes the game more fun and unpredictable. Also, think of putting in army lists nex time. But nevertheless, well done.
Good win. Yes, some added detail would help with your next batrep. But pretty good.
