I don't know what the craftworld eldar name was, but he had a buttload of reapers. Heres his list.
Avatar w/ 6 striking scorpions
10 Banshees in a real Wave Serpent
5 squads of 5 reapers, each including exarch.
He let me proxy 10 marines as ST in rhino. We didnt really count points in this. Its above 1500 but below 2000. 8' x 4' ice table, going short way, 12 inch deployment, no TVR and TAS.
I went first.
On turn one, i moved a rhino up 12 inches, and another rhino behind it. My dreadnought moved 6 inches for hull down, and only the lascannon had LOS to the wave serpent. My inquisitor with henchmen moved into cover. Only shooting was with my dread's las at the wave serpent. Front arc of 180 degrees had that thing that reduced a guns strength to just 8 if it is higher than 8. I failed to do anything. No assault. He shot all his 5 squads at my first rhino, getting 3 weapons destroyed and crew shaken, and then blew it up in the end. 5 stormtroopers survived.
Turn two, i rolled for reserves, got 2 GK squads and GM with retinue in, orbital strike still in reserves. I placed them far apart from each other. Shot some, killed some. 2 squads gone. He moves serpent up 24 inches. Shoots with remaining 3 squads and kills about 4 GK total (cus shrouding worked on one of the GK squads).
Turn Three, rolled for lance strike, came in but didnt hit anything. I moved my dread out of cover right infront of the serpent, blew it up, 7 banshees survive. Shooting took down another squad (so we're down to two if your not keeping up). GM assaulted a nearby squad and killed 4, no casaulties. Charge scorpions and avatar with 2 GK squads (not smart idea but either i charge or he charge). 3 GK died while 4 scorpions took the big one. He shot at my dread with last squad and nothing. Banshees into combat, killed 2 and scorpions killed another 2. Avatar got 1 and i striked back, killing the rest of the scorpions and 1 banshee. (thats 4 GK left for me, Avatar, and 6 banshees left for him.
Turn 4, lance strike, and again got none, rhinos up to last squad, disembark a total of 20 Stormtroopers, 4 with meltaguns.....yeah they gone. Assault with GM and retinue to last reaper and killed it. Consolidate towards combat. Banshees and avatar killed another 3 while i strike back and kill 2 banshees. His turn, consolidates, and kills the last GK. Consolidates towards my GM and retinue.
Turn 5, lance strike still didnt get anything. Dreadnought moves up and puts a wound on avatar. 2 rhino stormbolters brings down 1 banshee. shots from stormtroopers killed the rest (short range 2 shots at 12 so give or take 38 shots and meltguns). GM assaults avatar, i lose 2 GK, my GM wounded the avatar, passed the ld for force weapon and destroyed him.
Good game in all. I woulda lost if id gone first or if he hadnt been giving me SO MANY tips. He gave me tips on deployment, deep strike deployment, and what i shoulda done compared to what i did do after every turn. Overall it was a really fun and a good learning experience.
Sounds like you opponent was a good sportsman. That usually makes for a great game.
It would be nice to see what units you took so us GK player can give some better advice.
As far as GK deep striking, unless I am going for an objective, or placing them in a more remote area I try to DS 2 units close to each other. Since you can't assault the first turn you land, DS units tend to get shot up during the opponents turn so having the second unit to help shoot nearby threats is very helpful.
Get smoke launchers for your Rhinos. If you get first turn and move them forward into the open pop the smoke. The auto-glance from them reduces your risk of destruction immensely.
It's too bad your orbital strike didnt hit anything. I always have fun with my orbitals strikes, even when they don't. It always makes my opponents sweat when I tell them I have one before the game. Of course, if the strike hits things it is spectacular and even more fun.
nice report. it's good to hear when eldar get their asses kicked (no offence to eldar players or anythin)
'No evil will escape the just punishment of rightenous'
Glad you beat him down. 5 squads of reapers? He probably thought he was going to cheese you to death. YOu showed him, great job!
You know what they say, if you dont like the weather in houston...go back to where you came from
I don't believe that I would even play someone who took 5 squads of Reapers. (all with Exarchs)
The key is to take GK w/ Psycannons and unload on his Reapers (goes through armor). You could wipe out squads at a time!
It's also nice to have a GK Thunderhawk, but 99% of the time it's overkill.
For Deep Striking I'd normally try and land your units behind the enemy.
For support it's always good to have teleport homers on your most mobile squads (ST). I don't use Stormies though so I can't really say much about them. Remember if all else fails, 1GM w/4 Termies, and 30-40 GKs in a 2500-3000 pt game is always a disturbing thought for opponents. Psycannons are more than worth their points when things get dirty, and Dreads help to both soak up and draw away fire from your devastatingly strong GKs. People tend to forget that against anything but Tanks GKs are just about as good as Dreadnaughts in HTH.
Oh and against swarmer type armies (Nids, Orcs) Holocaust is also a good ability to have around.
Inquisitors or Inquisitor lords are a must in most cases.
I love orbital strikes and Death Cultists.
Land Raider Prometheus is also good, as is Land Raider Crusader. I haven't had overmuch success with normal pattern Land Raiders.
And ya! 5 reaper squads is a bit cheesy considering the mad array of units available to Eldar.
I adopted a cute lil' poison fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus! </a>
5x5 dark reapers plaing SM is pure cheese, but if he was a gud sportsman 2...
