I decided to face off against the local Eldar player, and give him a run for his money. We decided on playing a 1500 pts 'Take and Hold' mission.
My list can be found HERE ( - Word Bearers)
The eldar list included:
2 x 10 man Guardian Squads with a Warlock and Brightlance
10 Fire Dragons and Exarch
10 Harlequins with 10 kisses and Psyker
5 Dark Reapers with Exarch
Fire Prism with Holo-Fields
I made all maps and what-not. Now, I don't claim to have done a good job (and I don't believe there entierly accurate). There just there to give you a better understanding of whats going on.
Ok, heres the legend:
The eldar player won first turn and moved everything forward. Unfortunatly (for him), there were no targets in sight so it was a quick turn.
On my turn, a Word Bearer squad (the one that didn't move) Havocs, and Predator opened fire on the Avatar, causing 2 wounds. The Defiler used it's indirect fire to take out 3 Harlequins.
The eldar continued to footslogg across open ground, but the shooting phase whas much more effective. It began with the Fire Prism knocking off my Predator, and a Fire Dragon taking down one marine at a distance.
My turn 2 saw all (yes all) of my Daemons arrive. Luckely, they all scattered towards the enemy, and away from the board edges My Havoc squad was able to take off all of the Fire Prisms armerments, leaving it neigh useless... The Defiler yet again indirected and claimed another 4 Harlequins (leaving the squad at 3).
In the shooting phase I was able to take the Avatar down to 1 wound, leaving him easy bate for my small Daemonette squad right? Wrong! He made all 4 of his invlunerable saves and continued on to win combat (killing one Daemonette).
My forces fared much better against the Fire Dragons, taking them down without loosing a single man/ Daemon.
Trying to get a better firing lane, he moved his Guardinas over the hill... and closer to my Daemonettes...
His Harlequins were quick to respond, cutting my Daemonettes to peices in CC, unfortunatly, I took down his Avatar (finally) and consoldated into his Guardians. My furies were able to win combat against the Guardians, but they held... at least for another round.
Seeing the Daemonettes cut to peices, my Word Bearers opened fire on the remaining Harlequins killing them all. The Defiler, taking carful aim, took down 3 Dark Reapers, and pinned the squad...
The second Word Bearer squad assaulted (yes they assaulted) the Wraithlord, loosing one, but taking 2 wounds from the beast.
Both Daemon squads (Daemonettes and Furies) carved through the Guardian squads, and began re-grouping to take down the Dark Reapers...
This battle ended in a massacer, showing that the new eldar (and harlequins) can be beaten soundly. It was also a very good chance for me to try out the new 1500 pts.
Any comments greatly appreciated as this is my first battle report here... (enough info, not enough info, more pics, less pics ect.)
Good post. All I can say is, why did the eldar player have bad tactics?
Ah well, good job.
Good Battle report. You've shown everyone out there that harlequins can be beaten, all you need is either indirect or to get up close /w guns.
I don't think the eldar players tactics were that bad, he didn't really do much with his shootier elements but his assault troops seemed to hit the right places. What do you think they did wrong LittleBlueMan?
Its about time those snooty Eldar got put in their place, nice work.
Ed Gein+Screech= Emperors' children
Good game, and a very on theme Wordbearers list. Congrats on the win, I know it can be a pain to deal with the avatar and wraithlords.
One point though, I was under the impression that the veil of tears was a test required to target them, not "see" them as per night fight rules or tau stealth rules, and as such if you fail the roll not even indirect fire can shoot at them as it is still targeting. Could be wrong though, I don't think I have used any indirect fire since the new nid codex came out.
xrix is correct, you can't fire indirect fire weapons at the harlquins when they have VOT. its a much different rule from the stealth ability.
I think what little blue meant was(bad tactics wise), a very non shooty type eldar army running headlong into a khorne army not utilizing terrain or cover like the (khorne player was) and not keeping in mind the possible 2nd turn deamon rush
EDIT: Checked my Codex: Eldar and the WH 40K Rulebook.
No where on the Rulebook did it state that I need to see the target, or be able to target the squad.
The Codex: Eldar does have some confusing wording, here's what I got:
You are rolling for spotting distance (ie LOS) which isn't necessary for Barrage. However the entry is written very poorly, and I can see a FAQ clearing everything up in the not so (hopefully) distant future.
I almost felt sorry for him when I deploeyed 22 Daemons all within charge range... almost :shifty:
Well, nice battle report. And I don't know about the Harlequin rules, but you don't need to see the target to shoot at it with the Battlecannon (upgraded anyway). Just means you'll need to add a D6" to the scatter roll if I'm not mistaken.
"If you can wait til I get home, then I swear we can make this last."
Indirect weapons do not need to see the harlequins to shoot at them. I'm pretty sure they scatter an extra d6 though.
Kinda weird how everyone is against Eldar, they're far from the most difficult army and who's really all that afraid of Harlequins? Alot of armies have psyker protection and if not the common sense to feed a squad to the dancers than eat them alive. I wouldn't fear them, but that's me.
Good win, your set-up was really good and getting all the demons with a good scatter on turn 2 is usually all she wrote. I really liked seeing Furies used, everyeone say they're bad but I like anything that can reach out and touch the hard spots. Glory to Chaos!
