Farseer Kae (Pro: Kai[as in eye]-eh) sat and reflected on his time on this forsaken world. It was of no use to the eldar but the massive war ensuing was to good a chance for raids to pass up. The tyranids had broken his army and eaten the striking scorpion sect as well as many of his dire avengers. It had cost him much to bargain with the dark kin to escape the oncoming tyranids. Next the dark kin had betrayed him, as he expected they would. Unfortunately he had not forseen the incubi massacring his army. The Dark kin looting the remnants of his strike force for their own benefit. Next his craftworld allies had come with support from the harlequins. Demanding his abdication from leadership for dealing the dark eldar. He lost much support amongst his once mighty fleet for his defeat that day.
Now at last his new strike force was ready. The falcons had emerged from the clouds and Kae stood overlooking the tau forces attempting to set up a preliminary base. Looting the tau had always been a preference over the pathetic Mon-keigh materials. With the sudden burst of a railgun, the battle began.
Terrain: Note that all this is from my point of view. My side is the bottom side.
Hills in the various corners of the board, some rubble on the right side. Massive fantasy tower on the left side (slightly closer to him). Big piece of rocks and whatnot (size 3) in the middle.
Deployment: Alpha went on the left close to the tower. Beta sat in their devilfish in the middle. Hammerhead was on the right. Snipers are up the back in the centre. Commander + Guard and the stealth suits are deep-striking.
Echo goes in the centre, Epsilon takes the right, Wave Serpent at the left. The pathfinders infiltrate and scout into the rubble on the right side (ready to get picked up my Epsilon if necessary).
Alpha squad advances towards the tower but canít quite make it in. Beta squad fly forward in their wave serpent. Sniper drones shoot at the pathfinders but heís surprised by my 3+ cover save and I pass them all. The hammerhead scores a penetrating hit on Epsilon, thankfully the holo-fields leave it with a broken pulse laser and stunned. The spirit stones lower stunned to shaken.
Epsilon flies 24Ē down the right side of the board since itís shaken. Serpent goes 24Ē down the left side towards the tower. Echo advances 12Ē and after some debate we come to the conclusion it canít see the hammerheads side armour. I fail to break its front.
His commander + bodyguard deep-strike into the bottom-left corner of the board but scatter a bit to close to my wave serpent. They fire into the serpentís rear and manage to stun it (Iíd dropped spirit stones in favour of a shuriken cannon on Epsilon). The sniper drones shoot at the pathfinders again and manage to take out one through the cover. Alpha goes into the tower. Beta advances then disembarks. The hammerhead shakes Epsilon with that damn railgun.
Well since their serpent is stunned the seer + avengers jump out and move towards the commander. After some shooting the crisis suit is dead and the commander takes a wound. The pathfinders can finally see something worthwhile! (damn stealth generator thing on the drones). They shoot Beta squad, killing 1 and pinning it. Epsilon and Echo advance further. Echo takes down the hammerhead by hitting its side armour with the pulse laser. The avengers + seer charge the commander but apparently he has 4 wounds! So he doesnít die. I lose an avenger to him in cc so its drawn.
Alpha squad is finally ready to shoot but canít see anything. Beta is pinned. The stealth suits turn up in the middle of the board and open fire into the back of Echo. Thanks to a lucky double 6 Echo comes crashing down. 2 banshees + the exarch survive the crash and his shooting from the sniper drones and devilfish. In close combat I put another wound on his commander. He loses combat, fails morale and is swept down.
Avengers and seer get back into their now functioning serpent. The pathfinders kill 2 more members of Beta squad but fail to pin them again. The serpent drops a plasma missile onto Alpha squad packed tightly into the tower. He gets lucky cover saves and it only kills 1 out of 7 under the blast. Epsilon opens fire on the stealth suits but misses all of its shots.
Ok to give you an indication of what the board looks like now. Alpha fire warrior squad is sitting on the left-hand side in a tower. Beta and their wave serpent are in the middle with the stealth suits. The sniper drones are up the back blazing away. Epsilon is in the centre, missing its pulse laser. The serpent full of avengers + farseer is on the left side. 3 banshees are huddled behind the smoking wreck of Echo and the tau hammerhead. 4 pathfinders are huddled into cover on the right side of the board.
He unleashes the sniper drones and Beta onto the pathfinders. 3 of them are killed and the last guy runs away. Although not before getting pinned (I believe the BGB says heís fervently hoping to get out of the mess heís in). He realises his mistake afterwards at not shooting the banshees. Stealth suits shoot at Epsilon and manage to shake it. Alpha squad still has no targets in range. Itís starting to look messy for him.
This turn started out with a bang for me. Since Epsilon as shaken I decided it was time for a tank shock. I managed to draw the 24Ē line through Beta, the stealth suits and the sniper drones. He debated for a long time as to whether he should death or glory with his stealth suits fusion gun. That was seriously worrying me as if he killed or immobilised Epsilon it was game over for me. Fortunately some boasting about the immortality of a falcon convinced him not to death or glory (despite the burning wreck of Echo about 10 cm away). Confident in his tauís morale he rolled the tests and Beta squad and the stealth suits ran for their lives. The bansheeís charged into the fleeing stealth suits and massacred them.
Meanwhile my avengers flew forwards and disembarked again. I was quite proud of my range guessing here as Iím usually hopeless at leaving avengers out of rapid-fire range but still in range with their guns. As it turns out the closest guy was 13Ē away from Alpha squad! The furthest was 17Ē. Avengers bladestorm Alpha squad and with the help of another plasma missile hitting 6 guys I reduced them to 5 men left (still scoring damnit! [I think]). They failed morale but only ran 2Ē so they were all still in the tower.
Things are looking bad for him now. His 2 fire warrior squads have either been devastated by shooting or are currently fleeing for their lives. Beta canít rally as Epsilon is to close. Courtesy of difficult terrain though they only flee 4Ē, leaving them in range of the banshees. My banshees were promptly slaughtered by pulse rifles. Alpha killed 1 dire avenger with their guns. The sniper drones killed 3 more. I still have 5 left so my avengers are still scoring (just).
Epsilon manoeuvres a bit to get the moving fast rule but to stay within 6Ē of Beta squad. The avengers get back into their serpent but leave the farseer on foot. The serpent will block any shooting at my independent character anyway. The farseer finally successfully mind wars the tau shasívre or shasíla or Shasíui (whichever ones the sergeant). That brings Alpha below scoring. Echo shoots the sniper drones but gets horrible accuracy again and doesnít kill any.
Alpha squad canít shoot at anything they can hurt. The sniper drones shoot Epsilon but donít hurt it. Beta is forced to keep running (still not off the board).
Ah and hereís where the advantage of having the last turns advantages come into play. My avengers flew up to point blank of the sniper drones knowing they couldnít be shot up. The farseer went on a reckless charge at Alpha squad for the fun of it (and with a lucky fleet he made it!). Under the eldar firepower I killed the drones completely. The farseer charged into Alpha but only killed 1 and took an unlucky wound, ending cc in a stalemate.
Kae celebrated his victory once more. This would restore the morale of his men and women after being broken by their own allies. Much of the tau technology was already being broken down and sold to various mon-keigh pirates. Epsilon circled the battlefield in triumph, taunting any tau still struggling to flee the battlefield. The tau had lost any chance to set foot upon this tainted soil. Kae could see in his visions the fury and speed at which his new falcons would blaze a new path across this world.
Well the mission counts, even if itís gamma seek and destroy. He still has an empty devilfish (that did bugger all, all game), a below scoring Alpha fire warriors squad. And a fleeing (and hence not scoring) Beta fire warrior squad. I was never in danger of losing in the late game because apparently drones arenít scoring anyway. I had a wounded farseer (still above half wounds), a still scoring avenger squad and their unharmed wave serpent, and a falcon still up in the air, as well as the lone pathfinder still fleeing the board.
Man of the Match: Itís always hard choosing a man of the match for my eldar as I usually only win when I donít screw up with any of my units. Everyone did their part in this. I think Iíd have to give it to Epsilon though. Even though its guns killed 1 thing all game (a single drone) its tank shock was invaluable. It also took a railgun to the hull before it could move fast and came out ticking. The tauís best unit was easily the stealth suits. They killed a freakin falcon!
Lessons Learned: All of my squads should always be doing something, and I think I did that right this game. Most of my losses come from when a tank sits around waiting for something to happen on its side while the other half of my army is furiously fighting for its life. Iíve also got to be slightly less suicidal with my pathfinders. They are fire support not lures!!! Overall Iím happy with my avengers as they pulled off Fist of Fury better than his Fish of Fury. Iím not angry at Echo and the bansheeís as they got unlucky with the double 6. Oh and I really should keep spirit stones on my wave serpent.
Beware railguns and ignore drones! (damn stealth generator)
Your last lesson should be the most important. Never, ever, ever, ever take a wave serpant without spirit stones. Who cares if it can't shoot, as long as it can move and deliver it's cargo. If it gets stunned, then it's done and the entire squad in it might as well just be thrown away. People are afraid of Wave Serpants, and rightfully so. They know if that thing gets close enough to them, all sorts of hell will break loose. So you need to make sure that it will keep moving.
I've also found out that Dire Avengers are always worth giving Defend to. Especially if your taking the guy with the Dire Sword. That shows your planning on the possibility to get into CC, and denying your enemy that one attack each turn gives you so much more survivability. It's worth the points, forever and always.
Nights Justice Space Marines
Eldar Eth Kariel Craftworld
Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
Isn't your list illegal? You don't have two troop choices.
by the looks of it, link failed to list a pathfinder squad in his forces as a second troop choice
Raven Claws Space Marine Chapter........2500 points
Waagh Rotskrag (in building process)
Member of the Fluffmaster Clan
oops, my mistake. I had 5 pathfinders as my 2nd troops slot.
I'll consider giving avengers defend. I only really thought of it as useful for a shimmershield exarch to make a tar pit but it looks like it could come in handy for my exarch too.
it looks like you played a very green tau player. lots of rookie mistakes made, from army list to tactics. you may want to double think your tactics against a good commander.
Never give up. Never give up. HIT, HIT, HIT, HIT!
anyways good victory there, these rookies needs a little tough love now and again (it builds their character )
