    Tactics

    For Deployment Type

Spearhead - Deploy foot based units and keep rhino squads in reserve. Likewise Unless a lot of vehicles in the opposition army, the obliterators are in reserve.

Dawn of War - Deploy the plague marines well forward and the chaos marines further back (or on an objective if possible), deploy daemon prince to support the plague marines. Rhino squads come on turn 1, obliterators in reserve.

Pitched Battle - Deploy entire army (except lesser daemons).

    Against Army types

Mech - Against mech armies generally deploy the obliterators to maximise shooting from turn 1.

Static - Deploy army as close as possible, deepstrike the oblits.

    Unit Specific

Daemon Prince - Go for other big critters, init 6 and re-roll to hit and wound should help him here, also to wipe out smaller termie squads etc.

Lesser Daemons - Assault support and to help tie up an enemy unit, try to engage units to block LOS. Also, if needed will camp on an objective.

A successful sieze Zeratull's Black Legion Force will mean the Dark Eldar scoring units will have to face two turns of hurt while exposed and alone. Early scoring unit losses is not good for an objective mission. The Black Legion's scoring units have 2 turns of receiving NO hurt and are more resilient anyway. So my vote is for Zeratull's Black Legion Force.

The CSM don't have alot that can get range on the two portal units. Oblits will get a couple rounds of shooting and the daemon prince could possibly reach them in assaut. the troops are going to struggle to get into bolter range before the portals are down the the killing units of the dark eldar show up. The biggest problem for CSM is the fact that they are going to be spreeding atleast some as they move to get onto objectives leaving them open to some very angry assaults from the raider born DARK ELDAR with few chances to strike back.

    But,
2 large warrior squads deployed forward in cover
    and
Some Dark Eldar Cabal deploy first. Zeratull's Black Legion Force successfullysieze.
So the Dark Eldar, thinking they have first turn, will have deployed 'forward' so will be within range.

The closest anything can be is 24" because of the deployment style, meaning that most if not all of the bolters will be out of range first round, they could move and get out of the transports first round to shot at long range on round two, but if the DE put the wwp down round 1 then all the marines out of transports are easy prey to assaults and ravanger shots on the DE round 2.

Even though the black legion force seizing initiative makes this closer than normal, i still definetely see Dark eldar winning

on the first chaos turn everything but the oblits and noise marines will be out of range, and even all 4 oblits firing on one squad will be hard pressed to cause a morale check on 16 man warrior squads in cover . So there is no way for the Chaos to stop the portals from deploying. the warrior squads with lances, and then the raiders with lances, will make pulp out of obliterators (insta kill str8...). And on turn 2, i agree one warrior squad will probably fail a morale check, but the DE stuff coming out of the portal next turn will destroy the chaos units that have advanced. The 2 ravagers are both extremely deadly to meqs, especially expensive ones like cult marines, with their 3 plasma cannons. And the DE CC units outclass and outnumber the chaos ones, including the daemon prince. I see the DE with 1 to 2 less troops, but the chaos list with none at all by turn 6.

The big deciding factor here is who's heavy guns fire off first, without their ravagers around, the Deldar are at a major disadvantage. However I did just note one KEY factor, the oblits are deepstriking, a major mistake in this instance as it leaves the rest of the chaos army plasma-bait. I foresee the plague marines falling first, and after that they chaos marines just wouldn't be able to make up the difference.

Vote goes to Some Dark Eldar Cabal

Actually his tactics for pitched battle say that he deploys his entire army except for lesser daemons.

As for panic checks, killing 5 DE warriors to force a leadership check shouldn't be too hard.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.

Its possible for the CSM to disrupt the webways first turn, but lets take a look at how likely that is:

Six Noisies will move forward to be in range, so 2 shots each, so average:
    12 shots - 8 hits - 5.33 wounds - (cover) 2.66 dead DE. So maybe 3.
This assumes they can get range after zooming ahead in their rhino, dropping out and rapid firing their bolters (no blasters). So basically, not much help.

The Obliterators are hard to judge, because there are so many variables on how they can perform with plasma cannons. So let's look at their best and worst case scenarios.

Worst case- all shots scatter wide.

Best case- the DE are packed tight, and each blast sticks and hits seven. So, for each Oblit unit:
14 hits- 11.66 wounds - 5.83 failed cover saves. So an average of six DE down from each Oblit team, best case scenario.

But like I said, so many variables, like the DE's exact formation... Its looking like the CSM can only take out half of the initially deployed DE, with a good shooting phase. Even splitting fire to force tests on both units, I don't think it likely that both will fall back.

I see at least one Webway getting deployed, so I gotta give it to Some Dark Eldar Kabal.

    Hmmm.

I actually agree with kroxi. The DE will brutalise the Marines, especially with the Ravagers, but my thoughts are that the CSMs will have the resilience to survive the onslaught with a few troops units intact, winning by an objective or two at the end. The initial volley will not be fun for the deployed Troops units (half of the DE's scoring units). Zeratull's Black Legion Force wins, but it will be bloody.
