Pre Game Tactics - a gathering of information

After looking through a few of my more recent posts I have been finding that I put a lot of stock into what happens during the set-up of the game. There are a few things that happen before we really start to wage war and move our figures...There is the choosing of a mission, rolling for deployment and actually deploying your army onto the field. I am sure we all put a fair amount of time and effort to make a list that will challenge our would be foes, but with out tactics in the pre game I feel that we are playing our armies to their fullest potential.

I would like to start a series of threads that covers each portion of the "Pre game" for many different style of play and form it into a piece of tactica that can be used by all who play 40k in the fifth edition. Some of the things I would like use are generic army structures...Hoard, mech etc..Coming up with a list would be helpful.

Any other thoughts and ways to expand this idea would be much appreciated.

    Thanx to all,
    ZMB

I'd say that pre game tactics would especially in a tournament setting be gathering player's army style and tactics whilst you see them play. Look at the tables around you. Know what their armies can do. It will influence your deployment a lot.

I agree but would take it further. I believe that 40k (far more than WHM) is often won and lost before the table is even organised. Careful (or brutal) army list construction makes all the difference, as does actually having a plan when you go in to battle.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
